Dumplin’
RECOMMENDED: Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy is a Kindle Daily Deal for $1.99! I mentioned this book on a previous Whatcha Reading. I highly recommend this book, especially if you love Dolly Parton. It’s funny and emotional, and the struggles Willowdean faces as a “self-proclaimed fat girl” will relate to many who suffered from those awkward teen years. Seriously, get this book.
Self-proclaimed fat girl Willowdean Dickson (dubbed “Dumplin’” by her former beauty queen mom) has always been at home in her own skin. Her thoughts on having the ultimate bikini body? Put a bikini on your body. With her all-American beauty best friend, Ellen, by her side, things have always worked . . . until Will takes a job at Harpy’s, the local fast-food joint. There she meets Private School Bo, a hot former jock. Will isn’t surprised to find herself attracted to Bo. But she is surprised when he seems to like her back.
Instead of finding new heights of self-assurance in her relationship with Bo, Will starts to doubt herself. So she sets out to take back her confidence by doing the most horrifying thing she can imagine: entering the Miss Clover City beauty pageant—along with several other unlikely candidates—to show the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any twiggy girl does. Along the way, she’ll shock the hell out of Clover City—and maybe herself most of all.
With starry Texas nights, red candy suckers, Dolly Parton songs, and a wildly unforgettable heroine— Dumplin’ is guaranteed to steal your heart.

The Year We Fell Down
The Year We Fell Down by Sarina Bowen is $2.99! This is the first book in The Ivy Years series and Reader Cat previously emailed us to squee about this book:
I devoured-yet-savored this like I would cheesecake. I whipped through this thing on a Saturday night because it was so engrossing but at the same time I just marveled at it, like, “How is this book so good?” Bowen does a great job of portraying disability in romance, and just like Coming in from the Cold she took a plot angle that makes the whole romance genre seem fresh again–I mean, I love the concept of genre and its constrictions and its tropes (I swear having a guaranteed happy ending is my favorite thing about romance, too many nasty shocks from mysteries and then of course fantasy…I’m a bit of a genre geek) but I love when authors can play with those tropes (cough Courtney Milan cough) or create something fresh and exciting even within various constraints.
The sport she loves is out of reach. The boy she loves wants someone else.
What now?
She expected to start Harkness College as a varsity ice hockey player. But a serious accident means that Corey Callahan will start school in a wheelchair instead.
Across the hall, in the other handicapped-accessible dorm room, lives the too-delicious-to-be real Adam Hartley, another would-be hockey star with his leg broken in two places. He’s way out of Corey’s league.
Also, he’s taken.
Nevertheless, an unlikely alliance blooms between Corey and Hartley in the “gimp ghetto” of McHerrin Hall. Over tequila, perilously balanced dining hall trays, and video games, the two cope with disappointments that nobody else understands.
They’re just friends, of course, until one night when things fall apart. Or fall together. All Corey knows is that she’s falling. Hard.
But will Hartley set aside his trophy girl to love someone as broken as Corey? If he won’t, she will need to find the courage to make a life for herself at Harkness — one which does not revolve around the sport she can no longer play, or the brown-eyed boy who’s afraid to love her back.

I Want It That Way
I Want It That Way by Ann Aguirre is $2.99! This is the first book in her 2B Trilogy, though the other books seem to focus on separate couples. Oh and all the titles are named after Backstreet Boys songs. So no, you aren’t imagining that. Something I find particularly interesting about this new adult romance is that the hero is a young, single dad. The romance starts with a friends-with-benefits plot, which readers either seemed to love or hate.
Nadia Conrad has big dreams, and she’s determined to make them come true—for her parents’ sake as well as her own. But between maintaining her college scholarship and working at the local day care to support herself, she barely has time to think, let alone date. Then she moves into a new apartment and meets the taciturn yet irresistible guy in 1B….
Daniel Tyler has grown up too fast. Becoming a single dad at twenty turned his life upside down—and brought him heartache he can’t risk again. Now, as he raises his four-year-old son while balancing a full-time construction management job and night classes, a social life is out of the question. The last thing he wants is for four noisy students to move into the apartment upstairs. But one night, Nadia’s and Ty’s paths cross, and soon they can’t stay away from each other.
The timing is all wrong—but love happens when it happens. And you can’t know what you truly need until you stand to lose it.

The Heir and the Spare
The Heir and the Spare by Emily Albright is 99c! Though the heroine in this book is college-aged, many readers on Goodreads mentioned that it reads more like Young Adult rather than New Adult. However, many loved the “fish out of water” plot of an American in London.
Family can be complicated. Especially when skeletons from the past pop up unexpectedly. For American Evie Gray, finding out her deceased mother had a secret identity, and not one of the caped crusader variety, was quite the surprise. Evie’s mom had a secret life before she was even born, one that involved tiaras.
In this modern day fairytale, Evie is on a path to figure out who her mom really was, while discovering for herself what the future will hold. Charged with her late mother’s letters, Evie embarks on a quest into her past. The first item on the list is to attend Oxford, her mom’s alma mater. There, Evie stumbles upon a real life prince charming, Edmund Stuart the second Prince of England, who is all too happy to be the counterpart to her damsel in distress.
Evie can’t resist her growing attraction to Edmund as they spend more time together trying to unravel the clues her mother left behind. But, when doubts arise as to whether or not Edmund could ever be with an untitled American, what really ends up unraveling is Evie’s heart. When Evie uncovers all the facts about her mom’s former life, she realizes her mom’s past can open doors she never dreamed possible, doors that can help her be with Edmund. But, with everything now unveiled, Evie starts to crack under the pressure of new family responsibilities and the realization that her perfect prince may want her for all the wrong reasons.

“Shiver Her Timbers” by Alex Westmore is 99 cents on Amazon. I couldn’t put this book down – features a cross-dressing lesbian pirate, her brother, a saucy serving wench, a noblewoman, Mary Queen of Scots, and a pirate queen, among other delights.
The Year We Fell Down is one of my all time favorite books, highly recommend. I’ve also read I Want It That Way, which is pretty good.
Guys, an Anne Gracie is on sale for $2.99!!!! http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OT8GSA/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3BX7QRDWJG8DI&coliid=IYMDQA1MFKF3U
Gideon is one of my all time fav heroes, and the scene where he and Pru meet is HILARIOUS.
And a little more on topic, The Year We Fell Down was great. A paraplegic former ice-hockey chick who decides to join a intramural inter-tube water polo team instead of indulging in self-pity? Yeah, Corey was awesome.
I’ll put in another strong recommendation for The Year We Fell Down; I’ve read it at least half a dozen times and continue to enjoy it.
Dumplin’ was also an entertaining and thoughtful book.
The Year We Feel Down – strongly recommended!!!
I have read The Year We Fell Down a few times, it really is THAT good! I’ve read the whole series, but the first one is still my favorite. I have also read I Want It That Way and liked that one a lot as well. (But in that series my favorite one is As Long As You Love Me).
