  • Scandal Never Sleeps

Scandal Never Sleeps by Shayla Black

RECOMMENDED: Scandal Never Sleeps by Shayla Black and Lexi Blake is $1.99! Elyse gave this book a B+ and if you’ve been waiting for it to go on sale after reading the review, now’s your chance! Here’s what Elyse had to say:

Overall I was pleasantly surprised by Scandal Never Sleeps. It was the hot contemporary I wanted but with a side of delicious mystery, and I’m looking forward to finding out what happens next in Seduction in Session.

They are the Perfect Gentlemen of Creighton Academy: privileged, wealthy, powerful friends with a wild side. But a deadly scandal is about to tear down their seemingly ideal lives . . .

Maddox Crawford’s sudden death sends Gabriel Bond reeling. Not only is he burying his best friend, he’s cleaning up Mad’s messes, including his troubled company. Grieving and restless, Gabe escapes his worries in the arms of a beautiful stranger. But his mind-blowing one-night stand is about to come back to haunt him . . .

Mad groomed Everly Parker to be a rising star in the executive world. Now that he’s gone, she’s sure her job will be the next thing she mourns, especially after she ends up accidentally sleeping with her new boss. If only their night together hadn’t been so incendiary—or Gabe like a fantasy come true . . .

As Gabe and Everly struggle to control the heated tension between them, they discover evidence that Mad’s death was no accident. Now they must bank their smoldering passions to hunt down a murderer—because Mad had secrets that someone was willing to kill for, and Gabe or Everly could be the next target . . .

  • The Lady Hellion

The Lady Hellion by Joanna Shupe

RECOMMENDED: The Lady Hellion by Joanna Shupe is $1.99! The first two books in the series are also on sale, and Redheadedgirl loved them as well! RHG reviewed the book last year and gave it an A-:

The heroine in The Lady Hellion is Lady Sophia Barnes, the daughter of a Marquess… and sometimes known as Sir Stephen Radcliffe, a young pup of a dude who shows up at gaming hells and brothels while investigating missing women. (YES IT IS A CROSS-DRESSING TROPE YAY). She’s known Quint forever, and held a torch for him for at least that long. He’s also held a torch for her, so we also have two idiots who can’t use their fucking words.

I love a good “Can’t use their fucking words” story in the hands of a good writer.

A rabble rouser for justice, Sophie’s latest mission is to fight for the rights of the poor, the wretched–and the employees at Madame Hartley’s brothel. She’s not concerned about the criminals who will cross her path, for Sophie has mastered the art of deception–including the art of wearing trousers. Now her fate is in her own hands, along with a loaded gun. All she needs is instruction on how to shoot it. But only one person can help her: Lord Quint, the man who broke her heart years ago. The man she won’t let destroy her again…

The last thing Damien Beecham, Viscount Quint, needs is an intrusion on his privacy, especially from the beautiful, exasperating woman he’s never stopped wanting. A woman with a perilously absurd request, no less. For Damien is fighting a battle of his own, one he wishes to keep hidden–along with his feelings for Lady Sophia. Yet that fight is as hopeless as stopping her outlandish plan. Soon all Quint knows for certain is that he will die trying to protect her…

  • Longbourn

    Longbourn by Jo Baker

Longbourn by Jo Baker is 99c! This book divided some of the Bitches. Carrie gave it gave it an A:

I loved this book for its prose style, for its characters, and for its clever construction.  I also loved it for the way it made me think about the Regency period and also about our own.  I don’t have servants, but most of the things I that I own and that I eat are constructed or sewn or grown or picked or sold by people who work harder than I will ever know and who often live lives of great suffering.  This book reminded me of their invisible presence in my life and made me want to be more responsible about my own decisions.  Above all, the use of language was lovely and the character’s were moving.  I highly recommend this book as long as you know what you are getting into!

Meanwhile, Sarah gave it a D:

If a degree of interest is presumed in the reader due to this being a P&P retelling, that’s fair. But I needed additional characters of interest to read about, not just characters of exhaustion (Sarah and everyone else) and mystery (James, Mrs. Hill) to keep me interested. At times I felt the characters, especially Sarah, were vehicles to demonstrate that Servants At That Time Had A Hard Life, and Here Are More Details About That. She was too often a vehicle to illustrate the time, and not a character in her own right. When she was a character, any growth she might have experienced in her own narrative was cut short by something from the original P&P. This was more a story about the life of the servants than about the servants themselves, and as a result was less satisfying for me. In this book, I found a lot of historical facts and experiences, but I didn’t read a full story of characters, and I missed that part most.

    Which camp are you in?

A brilliantly imagined, irresistible below-stairs answer to Pride and Prejudice: a story of the romance, intrigue and drama among the servants of the Bennet household, a triumphant tale of defying society’s expectations, and an illuminating glimpse of working-class lives in Regency England.

The servants at Longbourn estate–only glancingly mentioned in Jane Austen’s classic–take centre stage in Jo Baker’s lively, cunning new novel. Here are the Bennets as we have never known them: seen through the eyes of those scrubbing the floors, cooking the meals, emptying the chamber pots. Our heroine is Sarah, an orphaned housemaid beginning to chafe against the boundaries of her class. When the militia marches into town, a new footman arrives under mysterious circumstances, and Sarah finds herself the object of the attentions of an ambitious young former slave working at neighboring Netherfield Hall, the carefully choreographed world downstairs at Longbourn threatens to be completely, perhaps irrevocably, up-ended. From the stern but soft-hearted housekeeper to the starry-eyed kitchen maid, these new characters come vividly to life in this already beloved world. Jo Baker shows us what Jane Austen wouldn’t in a captivating, wonderfully evocative, moving work of fiction.

  • Caught by You

Caught by You by Jennifer Bernard

Caught by You by Jennifer Bernard is 99c! This is a contemporary romance with a fake relationship plot and a baseball-playing hero. Though this can be read as a standalone, readers say you’d have a better understanding of the characters if you’ve read the first book, which is on sale for $2.99. It has a 4.2-star rating on Goodreads.

Love comes out of left field in the second novel in USA Todaybestselling author Jennifer Bernard’s sexy baseball-themed series

Months of alternately flirting and bickering with Kilby Catfish catcher Mike Solo just turned into the hottest kiss of Donna MacIntyre’s life—and that’s a major league complication. Then Mike comes up with a game-changing idea: a marriage proposal that could help win her case— even as it jeopardizes her heart . . .

Mike hasn’t been able to get the gorgeous, gutsy redhead out of his fantasies. The least he can do is fix the mess he helped create. I hated Longbourn, I would have given it a F, dreary, self indulgent dreck.

  2. Lora says:

I tried Longbourn and couldn’t stick with it. I have issues with books in which a character or in this case ALL the characters act as a mouthpiece to announce that the author completed extensive and minute research. Look at all the things I learned! Let me count the ways! Who needs plot or character growth when I am so impressed with my own information!

  3. SB Sarah says:

I know some of y’all have felt this way and you’ll understand, but THANK YOU. I’m so glad I’m not alone in not enjoying it. So many people I’ve met have adored this book, and more power to them, but I thought was the only one who didn’t enjoy it. It’s so reassuring. Thank you.

  4. Julia says:

YAY! I love Longbourn. Like love. Here’s a summary I wrote about it a few years ago: http://cannonballread.com/2014/04/work-love-and-happiness/

I did a happy dance when I saw it was on sale.
It’s on my re-read list for (I rarely re-read). Thanks!

  5. Shanna says:

Am I the only person confused on how the heroine’s shoe fell off on the cover of Caught By You? If you look at the shoe that’s still on, the straps clearly go up onto her ankle so I don’t understand how only one shoe fell off. Sorry, I found that incredibly distracting!

  6. It looks to me as though the model was barefoot and that shoe was painted on…though that doesn’t explain how the show was *supposed* to have fallen off.

  7. kitkat9000 says:

@Shanna: Me too! Literally my first thought when looking at the cover was- how could that strappy shoe have fallen off? I didn’t notice the rest of her or him at all. Also ignored the author name and book title. Marketing fail?
