  • Trigger Warning

    Trigger Warning by Neil Gaiman

Trigger Warning by Neil Gaiman is a Kindle Daily Deal for $1.99! Unfortunately, it’s not being price matched yet. This is a collection of short stories that Carrie was excited about last February. Readers mentioned there’s a diverse selection of twenty-four stories, but a few others prefer his longform stuff. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

In this new anthology, Neil Gaiman pierces the veil of reality to reveal the enigmatic, shadowy world that lies beneath. Trigger Warning includes previously published pieces of short fiction–stories, verse, and a very special Doctor Who story that was written for the fiftieth anniversary of the beloved series in 2013–as well “Black Dog,” a new tale that revisits the world of American Gods, exclusive to this collection.

Trigger Warning explores the masks we all wear and the people we are beneath them to reveal our vulnerabilities and our truest selves. Here is a rich cornucopia of horror and ghosts stories, science fiction and fairy tales, fabulism and poetry that explore the realm of experience and emotion. In “Adventure Story”–a thematic companion to The Ocean at the End of the Lane–Gaiman ponders death and the way people take their stories with them when they die. His social media experience “A Calendar of Tales” are short takes inspired by replies to fan tweets about the months of the year–stories of pirates and the March winds, an igloo made of books, and a Mother’s Day card that portends disturbances in the universe. Gaiman offers his own ingenious spin on Sherlock Holmes in his award-nominated mystery tale “The Case of Death and Honey”. And “Click-Clack the Rattlebag” explains the creaks and clatter we hear when we’re all alone in the darkness.

A sophisticated writer whose creative genius is unparalleled, Gaiman entrances with his literary alchemy, transporting us deep into the realm of imagination, where the fantastical becomes real and the everyday incandescent. Full of wonder and terror, surprises and amusements,Trigger Warning is a treasury of delights that engage the mind, stir the heart, and shake the soul from one of the most unique and popular literary artists of our day.

  • The Bell Jar

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath is $2.99 at Amazon and Google:Play! Hopefully, I’m giving you all flashbacks to your college lit classes. I personally feel like this is a book that people should attempt to read at least once in their life. However, like with most classic works of fiction, you either love it or hate it. What camp are you in?

Sylvia Plath’s shocking, realistic, and intensely emotional novel about a woman falling into the grip of insanity

Esther Greenwood is brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful, but slowly going under—maybe for the last time. In her acclaimed and enduring masterwork, Sylvia Plath brilliantly draws the reader into Esther’s breakdown with such intensity that her insanity becomes palpably real, even rational—as accessible an experience as going to the movies. A deep penetration into the darkest and most harrowing corners of the human psyche, The Bell Jar is an extraordinary accomplishment and a haunting American classic.

  • Close to Home

Close to Home by Lisa Jackson

Close to Home by Lisa Jackson is $1.99! This book has a little bit of everything: mystery, romantic suspense, and a teeny dash of the paranormal. Some readers thought there was way too much going on, but others loved the fast pace of the book and the paranormal twist. It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads. There are also a few other Jackson titles  on sale!

    Home

Along the shores of Oregon’s wild Columbia River, the Victorian mansion where Sarah McAdams grew up is as foreboding as she remembers. The moment she and her two daughters, Jade and Gracie, pull up the isolated drive, Sarah is beset by uneasy memories–of her cold, distant mother, of the half-sister who vanished without a trace, and of a long-ago night when Sarah was found on the widow’s walk, feverish and delirious.

    Is Where

But Sarah has vowed to make a fresh start and renovate the old place. Between tending to her girls and the rundown property, she has little time to dwell on the past. . ..Until a new, more urgent menace enters the picture.

    The Fear Is

One by one, teenage girls are disappearing. Frantic for her daughters’ safety, Sarah feels the house’s walls closing in on her again. Somewhere deep in her memory is the key to a very real and terrifying danger. And only by confronting her most terrifying fears can she stop the nightmare roaring back to life once more. . .

  • Things Good Girls Don’t Do

Things Good Girls Don’t Do by Codi Gary

Things Good Girls Don’t Do by Codi Gary is 99c! This is contemporary romance about a woman who gets dumped by her longtime boyfriend, who then gets engaged to the next woman who comes (ahem) into his life. Reviewers liked it, but say the cover isn’t quite accurate – the book isn’t as hot as the cover implies, though the characters are vivid and the hero is particularly memorable. Many of Codi Gary’s books are on sale, including the rest in the Rock Canyon, Idaho series.

    Good girls don’t steal.
Good girls don’t visit sex shops.
Good girls don’t have one-night stands.

For Katie Conners, being a good girl just isn’t worth it anymore. It used to mean getting the life she always wanted. But that was before she got dumped and her ex got engaged to his rebound. So, after a bad day and one too many mojitos, Katie starts making a list of things a girl like her would never do, not in a million years . . .

As a tattoo artist with a monster motorcycle, Chase Trepasso isn’t the kind of guy you bring home to mom and dad.

And when he finds Katie’s list in a bar, he’s more than happy to help her check off a few items. Especially the ones on the naughtier side . . .

Katie’s more than tempted by Chase’s offer, as long as they keep things uncomplicated. But as they spend more time together, she may just wind up breaking the most important rule of all: Good girls don’t fall in love with bad boys.

A Worthy Pursuit by Karen Wittemeyer is $1.99 today ONLY!

  2. kkw says:

I love Sylvia Plath, she’s absolutely brilliant, and I can’t imagine not liking The Bell Jar, everyone should totally read it. Provided…everyone knows it is not a romance novel. Everyone knows that, right? Like, if you want a trashy good time or a HEA, this is not where you turn.

  3. Delia Bourne says:

KKW is right. I read The Bell Jar twice, it was so good. And both times it made me want to kill myself. Be warned.

  4. Lostshadows says:

I don’t remember hating The Bell Jar, but it’s been a long time. I guess it’s time for a reread.

  5. LML says:

The Bell Jar was one of my reasons not to be an English Lit major.

  6. Amanda says:

@LML: I actually laughed really hard at this.

  7. Susan says:

It’s been a number of years since I’ve read any Plath works, but I’ve read The Bell Jar and her poetry starting as an angsty teen into my still sometimes angsty older years. It’s true that her writing may not be everyone’s cup of tea–and should possibly come with trigger warnings–but I think The Bell Jar was wonderful.

  8. Tam says:

I was an English major who loathed having to read ‘The Bell Jar’.

  9. A. Lady says:

The Bell Jar is the business. I really liked how unexpectedly funny Plath is- she has a black but very wicked sense of humour in her observations of social situations. It’s also quite dark (obviously), so choose your moment when reading it. But do read it!
