A Test of Wills

RECOMMENDED: A Test of Wills by Charles Todd is $1.99! This was recommended by Elyse on a post about historical mysteries where she describes the series’ main protagonist:
Rutledge is suffering from PTSD or shell shock from his experiences in WWI which causes him to periodically hallucinate visits from a fallen comrade. The series also has a romance subplot over time.
In 1919, Scotland Yard Inspector Ian Rutledge remains haunted by World War I, where he was forced to have a soldier executed for refusing to fight. When Rutledge is assigned to investigate a murder involving the military, his emotional war wounds flare. It is a case that strikes dangerously close to home–one that will test Rutledge’s precarious grip on his own sanity.

Beyond Shame is erotic dystopian romance with a side order of dark intensity. So many people whose opinions I respect have raved about it, but it’s also one of those books that may not be for everyone (on account of how dark it is). It’s free right now, so if any of those are your catnip, grab it before the price goes back up! If you want to continue the series, some of the following books are on sale for $3.99!
All Noelle Cunningham has ever wanted is a life beyond–beyond the walls of Eden, where only the righteous are allowed to remain, and beyond her stiflingly restrictive existence as a councilman’s daughter. But only ruins lie outside the City, remnants of a society destroyed by solar storms decades earlier.
The sectors surrounding Eden house the corrupt, the criminal–men like Jasper McCray, bootlegger and cage fighter. Jas clawed his way up from nothing to stand at the right hand of Sector Four’s ruthless leader, and he’ll defend the O’Kane gang with his life. But no fight ever prepared him for the exiled City girl who falls at his feet.
Her innocence is undeniable, but so is their intense sexual attraction, and soon they’re crossing every boundary Noelle barely knew she had. But if she wants to belong to Jas, first she’ll have to open herself to the gang, to a dangerous world of sex, lust and violence. A world where passion is power, and freedom is found in submission.

An Indecent Invitation by Lauren Trentham is $2.88 at Amazon and Barnes & Noble! This is a historical romance with spies and childhood friends. Many readers loved the heroine and found her to be brash, fun, and independent. On Goodreads, there wasn’t much on what people didn’t like about this book, so feel free to chime in if you’ve read it. The book also as a 4.2-star rating on Goodreads.
Keeping her safe is difficult, keeping a proper distance from her is downright impossible.
Lady Lily Drummond understands only too well the danger of spy work. Her father, a preeminent master spy, has been missing for months, and her brother barely survived his final mission for the Crown. Lily is still determined to help find her father, no matter how hard her brother and his best friend try to keep her in the dark.
Busy trying to untangle the web of deceit surrounding the Earl of Windor’s disappearance, Crown spy Gray Masterson also has to ensure Lily Drummond, the gangly, awkward child who was his constant shadow growing up, doesn’t get herself ruined at her London debut. But the girl with scraped knees and elbows has evolved into a lush, sensual beauty surrounded by a bevy of suitors.
Realizing Lily is going to investigate on her own if he doesn’t let her join the hunt for her missing father, Gray assumes he can give Lily a few minor tasks to pacify her, but he quickly learns she is a valuable asset. Moreover, she fairly crackles with life and warmth—things he craves after his dark years in service.

Into the Crossfire by Lisa Marie Rice is $1.99! This is a romantic suspense with a former Navy SEAL hero. He also happens to be undercover and has the hots for his neighbor. Some readers, admittedly, found the book to be a little boring, while others described this more as an erotic suspense, which they loved. Have you read this one?
Former Navy SEAL Sam Reston keeps to himself. His world is dangerous, uncertain, violent…and there is no room in it for the helpless and weak. Then the most beautiful woman in the world moves in next door to him…
Nicole Pearce’s life is complicated enough—with an ailing father and a new business to worry about—and the last thing she needs is to get involved with a secretive, hard-bodied, hardheaded neighbor. Yet Sam leaves her breathless—her body tingling with erotic desire—and it takes every ounce of her fabled control to resist offering herself to him, no strings attached. What she doesn’t know is that Sam Reston is on an undercover assignment . . . and she’s about to step into the crossfire.
Never has Sam ached for a woman so badly, and he’s never fallen in love before. Now that Nicole is in grave danger, he will become her shield, and guard the tempting body he longs to touch and taste. Because a terrorist plot hatched half a world away is heading to their doorstep—and it can only be derailed by one man and one woman.

Wow, that INTO THE CROSSFIRE cover for some reason made me think the lady was giving herself a breast self-exam.
Dang it, the price I got on the Trentham book when I clicked over to Amazon was $4.84 or something like that, not $2.88. Reader, I bought it anyway…
I read and enjoyed “Beyond Shame”, but loved how the rest of the series evolved and is evolving (‘cuz the authors aren’t done with this world yet). Each book adds to the world-building, which is fabulous.
There was a tick that really bothered me – Every time the heroine does something halfway sexy, she calls it dirty. That tick appears in a lot of the books, but tapered off somewhat. Still, it made me just plain mad to read it sometimes.
BUT, this dystopian and gritty erotic novel is a great gateway to a fascinating, sexy world.
Now, got to check Amazon about that spy book . . . .
I love the fever series by Karen M Moning. The latest one is FEVERSONG. ♡♡♡
This is just a test. I’ve noticed some of my comments don’t seem to post? To sum up: Beyond Shame: Good, but melodramatic. Definitely the thing for the people who really go for the “bad boy” characters, though the plot can be hard to take seriously.
I love anything Laura Trentham writes.
Thanks for the news that the Ian Rutledge books have a romance arc–or hope of one. I started reading them when they first came out but gave up several books in because it felt like he was relentlessly doomed to life alone without hope of any kind of HEA. I did enjoy them, but I need the sugar of romance to sweeten the darkness of my mystery series’ or I get antsy.
I’ve been reading the Rutledge series since it debuted. What romance arc are you talking about? I hesitate to mention the only one I know of here as it may be spoilery. Any additional info would be appreciated.
