It’s DABWAHA 2015 Bracket Selection Sunday!

DABWAHAAre you ready?! It’s Bracket Selection Sunday for the 2015 DABWAHA.

What does that mean? It means the full slate of nominees has been announced, including the eight books nominated by readers.

And now: the DABWAHA bracket is ready to be filled out.

UPDATE: You have until 3/18/2014 at 12:00/noon ET to enter your picks!

How do you do that?

Easy! You can follow the instructions step by step at the DABWAHA site. The essential steps to enter your bracket:

  1. Click on “New” and enter your nickname. Only the Nickname will show up publicly.NOTE!!! If you played last year or if you pre registered this year, please use the dropdown menu and find your nickname:

  2. Click on the title of the book you will think will win each match until you have only one book left as your Champion. Note: you are not only trying to predict which book will win, but also which author/fandom/community can best gather votes to back their favorites. Yes, it’s tricky. That’s why it’s fun.The tie breaker is the number of reader nominations we received. Hint: it is under 1000. Another hint: it is higher than 2.
  3. When you hit submit, you’ll go back to the DABWAHA page – do NOT be alarmed! Also: your entries will not show up immediately. They have to be manually uploaded in batches, so they don’t show immediately. If you don’t see yours within a few hours, please email Jane.

Important note for visually impaired readers: if you’re using a screen reader and having problems with the bracket selection page, please email Sarah and I can help you complete your bracket. I can do over the phone, or we can coordinate a time via Skype, but I want you to be able to participate. Don’t be shy! Contact me, please!

What’s the point of all this?

Fun! Mayhem! The newfound knowledge of connecting your wireless device to all the free WiFi in a three mile radius so you can vote repeatedly!

Also, there’s prizes. OH YES. The prizes have been posted. We have a ton of awesome prizes donated by many splendid individuals including reading devices, gift cards, books, and chocolate. Plus, there are prizes for middle of the road brackets, the worst bracket and for winners of each round. Just by picking a bracket, you’re entered in the tournament.

So what do we do now?

Right now: pick your bracket. Have a look at the books, and ask yourself, What awesome book in each category is most likely to win each round? Then, once you’ve picked your bracket, we begin voting.

Voting?

Yup. The winner of each round is determined by reader voting. Polls open, and voting commences! There’s vote mongering, trash talking, and compliment wars on all forms of social media during the DABWAHA, too, so there’s a lot of goofy fun to be had.

  1. K F says:

Am I doing something wrong? There are no books to select on the bracket entry page – am I missing something?

  2. @K F: You’re not alone.

  3. Oh good, it isn’t just me.

  4. Celia says:

Oh good. I kept thinking maybe it was because I was using Chrome, but then it didn’t work on firefox either.

Also, I took a very circuitous route to get here because I had to switch computers to switch browsers, but a random old Dear Author post (first in the search results, though) sent me to http://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/dabwaha/home.html in case you want to update/redirect that link.

  5. Malin says:

Add me to the list of people who can’t select any books. I found my nickname from last year on the drop down menu, but no books appear. 🙁

Have tried with both Chrome and Firefox, no luck.

  6. Kate L says:

The post states that the nominations have ALL been selected and announced, but where did that happen? Specifically, when were the READER NOMINATIONS announced? It’s hard to make heads or tails of the pick sheet when I don’t know one whole category.

  7. Amanda says:

I got mine in there were tough choices early on.

  8. Celia Marsh says:

Aha, @kateL the complete nominees are listed here: http://dabwaha.com/2015/03/08/

I had to search and search for them too.

  9. SB Sarah says:

My fault! I’m sorry about that. Bad time coordination on my part, plus a link that didn’t work. *headdesk* I apologize!

The reader nominations are live here.

And the bracket selection is live on the DABWAHA site.

    Again, my apologies.

  10. DonnaMarie says:

Yah! My reader nominiation was picked. BOO! Once again, all my picks are one one side of the bracket & they end up cancelling each other out by the last round. EVERY year. It’s like picking a favorite child.

  11. Celia Marsh says:

Donna, it could be worse, all of your favorites could be in THE SAME BRACKETS. *reviews list of nominees* *makes picks* *looks at brackets, realizes that all of the picks are in the same brackets* *gives up, just starts clicking randomly.*

  12. ohhellsyeah says:

Some of those choice were just mean. Courtney Milan vs. Sherry Thomas? Between the Sheets and the Lover’s Knot in categories they can never win? Having to vote for Elle Kennedy when I still haven’t forgiven her for that hockey romance I read that was on sale last week?

Then there was the finding 7 books I now want to read (on top of the 2 which I want to read but are too expensive). Good bye book budget. It was nice knowing you.

  13. Kate L says:

Thanks Celia and SB Sarah for showing me where to find the complete list of nominated books (including the reader noms)…now I’ll just be joining the rest of you, curling up in pain over painful decisions.

  14. DonnaMarie says:

Yay! My reader noms were picked!! Boo!! Once again ALL my favs are on one side of the brackets and end up cancelling each other out. It’s like picking a favorite child. Julie James, I’m putting all my eggs in your basket. You go girl!!

  15. DonnaMarie says:

Okay, something’s up with my feed and I’m entering the same thing over and over. Sorry!!

  16. cayenne says:

Bracket in! And OY…what a tough year! I have a feeling I’d better red-circle the second chance bracket day O.O

  17. Julie says:

I think it’s amazing my two favorite books were able to make it to the final two… that was a tough call! That was a first for me.

  18. Darlynne says:

An indication of things to come: I missed that APPLES SHOULD BE RED was already in the novella category and nominated it for a reader pick. *sigh* Maybe this is the year to try to pick all the losers.

  19. laj says:

I spent all morning reading reviews AND noticing the fan-base numbers of the picks on many different reader sites. Every year I have voted blindly…..this year I am prepared!

My two favorites went head to head in the end too!

    OOH I love DABWAHA…

  20. SB Sarah says:

It makes me so happy to hear all the excitement – thank you!!

  21. SB Sarah says:

Sorry about that, Kate L! Our bad!

  22. Heidi says:

I messed up my final pick. How do I go back & correct. I don’t see my nickname. Although I did get an email with my picks. Help pls for a picker too fast on the trigger.

  23. LauraL says:

I think I need a Mojito after making my choices. There are some tough contenders this year. Anna Richland, you can take it!

  24. bev says:

First time playing. Tried to pick based on the buzz I remember and what authors I think may have a strong fan base. Then after that still just ended up picking my favorite read of last year.

  25. LauraL –

Thank you for the vote of confidence! I hope I make it out of the first round, but if you took HIS ROAD HOME all the way through, I’m deeply worried you’re going to bust your bracket. (Email me off line and I’ll email a consolation copy of one of my Immortal Vikings books if you’d like! Busted bracket side award for believing in the waaaay underdog.) (It’s not NCAA so I won’t get benched for that, right?)

I had a horrible time picking b/c I could not believe I had to choose between Rogue Spy and A Christmas Gone Horribly Wrong by Cecilia Grant, a fellow Seattle writer – I’ve read both and they’re both great.

At least I’m not up against Archer’s Sin by Amy Raby at the start though – the three Seattle writers don’t have to go head to head right away!
