  • Jewels of the Sun

Jewels of the Sun by Nora Roberts

RECOMMENDED: Jewels of the Sun by Nora Roberts is $1.99 at Amazon and Google:Play – those fairies must be exhausted, right? Thanks to Nicole for the heads up on this one!

This is book 1 of the Gallaghers of Ardmore trilogy, which is set in Ireland and blends a lot of fantasy and legend with contemporary romance. I love this book and re-read it every so often because for me it feels like I’m traveling while I read. It has a 4+ star average on GR, and the whole trilogy is pretty spiffy, too.

Determining to reevaluate her life, Jude Murray flees America to take refugee in Faerie Hill Cottage, immersing herself in the study of Irish Folk and discovers hope for the future of the magical past.

Finally back home in Ireland after years of traveling, Aidan Gallagher possesses an uncommon understanding of his country’s haunting myths. Although he’s devoted to managing the family pub, a hint of wildness still glints in his stormy eyes–and in Jude, he sees a woman who can both soothe his heart and stir his blood. And he begins to share the legends of the land with her–while they create a passionate history of their own…

  • Naked in Death

Naked in Death by J.D. Robb

RECOMMENDED: Naked in Death by JD Robb, aka Nora Roberts, is $1.99 at Google Play and Amazon. This is the first book in the In Death series, which really never went anywhere. Ha. Kidding. The 40th book in the series will be published this year.

Naked in Death was published in 2005 and features a fan favorite couple, Eve and Roarke, in a futuristic version of New York City. It’s a mix of suspense and slowly evolving romance. I’ve probably read this book six or seven times, and there are scenes that still stick with me, like the coffee, the button, and the heat in Eve’s car.

In a world of danger and deception, she walks the line–between seductive passion and scandalous murder…Eve Dallas is a New York police lieutenant hunting for a ruthless killer. In over ten years on the force, she’s seen it all–and knows her survival depends on her instincts.

And she’s going against every warning telling her not to get involved with Roarke, an Irish billionaire–and a suspect in Eve’s murder investigation. But passion and seduction have rules of their own, and it’s up to Eve to take a chance in the arms of a man she knows nothing about–except the addictive hunger of needing his touch.

  • The Neanderthal Box Set

The Neanderthal Box Set by Penny Reid

The Neanderthal Boxed Set by Penny Reid is $2.99 right now at Amazon. This is a boxed set of books 1 and 1.5 in Reid’s Knitting in the City series, Neanderthal Seeks Human and Neanderthal Marries Human, the sequel. These books are reader favorites for the comedy and the storyline, and this boxed set is a limited-time only deal.

***Books 1 and 1.5 in the Knitting in the City Series***
    NEANDERTHAL SEEKS HUMAN
This is a full-length, 110k word novel and is the first book in the Knitting in the City series.

There are three things you need to know about Janie Morris: 1) She is incapable of engaging in a conversation without volunteering TMTI (Too Much Trivial Information), especially when she is unnerved, 2) No one unnerves her more than Quinn Sullivan, and 3) She doesn’t know how to knit.

After losing her boyfriend, apartment, and job in the same day, Janie Morris can’t help wondering what new torment fate has in store. To her utter mortification, Quinn Sullivan- aka Sir McHotpants- witnesses it all then keeps turning up like a pair of shoes you lust after but can’t afford. The last thing she expects is for Quinn- the focus of her slightly, albeit harmless, stalkerish tendencies- to make her an offer she can’t refuse.

    NEANDERTHAL MARRIES HUMAN
This book is not a standalone. It is the sequel to ‘Neanderthal Seeks Human,’ it is book #1.5 in the ‘Knitting in the City’ series, and it is a full length, 105k word novel.

There are three things you should know about Quinn Sullivan: 1) He is madly in love with Janie Morris, 2) He’s not above playing dirty to get what (or who) he wants, and 3) He doesn’t know how to knit.

After just five months of dating Janie, Quinn—former Wendell and unapologetic autocrat—is ready to propose marriage. In fact, he’s more than ready. If it were up to Quinn, he would efficiently propose, marry, and beget Janie with child all in the same day—thereby avoiding the drama and angst that accompanies the four stages of pre-matrimony: engagement, meeting the parents, bachelor/bachelorette party, and overblown, superfluous wedding day traditions. But Janie, much to Quinn’s dismay, tosses a wrench in his efficacious endeavors and challenges him to prove his devotion by going through the matrimonial motions, no matter how minute and mundane.

Will Quinn last until the wedding day? Or will he yield to his tyrant impulses?

Regardless, one thing is for certain, Quinn Sullivan will have to learn to expect the Spanish Inquisition (i.e. the unexpected) if he plans to have and keep Janie Morris as his wife.

  • Beauty and the Brit

Beauty and the Brit by Lizbeth Selvig

Beauty and the Brit by Lizbeth Selvig is .99 right now. This is a contemporary romance with a 3.9-star average. The heroine is trying to protect her sister from a gang leader’s revenge, and takes refuge at the hero’s horse farm in the country. Have you read this one?

Tough and self-reliant Rio Montoya has looked after her two siblings for most of their lives. But when a gang leader makes threats against her sister Bonnie, even Rio isn’t prepared for the storm that could destroy her family. When their dreams are shattered in one dangerous moment, Rio seeks refuge for them all at a peaceful horse farm in the small town of Kennison Falls, Minnesota.

Rio should feel safe in Kennison Falls, but her budding romance with the stable’s owner, handsome British ex-pat David Pitts-Matherson, feels as dangerous as her past. The incredibly sexy David is as far from her type as any man could get, yet he tempts Rio in a way she never expected. But Rio knows that her time in Kennison Falls is limited, that her family is still in danger, and that she and David come from completely different worlds—a recipe for disaster.

David has his own secrets, and even the sparks he feels flying with the fiery and beautiful Rio may not be enough for him to let her into his heart. Can the beauty and the Brit ever find common ground? Or will their pasts stand in the way of true love?

I liked Jewels of The Sun. A lot of great lines in that book. The hero is a bit of alphahole, although I still really liked this book.
Naked in Death is the first in a great series, but I feel like there should be trigger warnings about the whole series. In Death is one of the series out there, not so much the first one, but some of these books are dark comparably to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I know it seems like Mysteries automatically seem dark, but compared to say most of Agatha Christie’s work this is far more dark.

Stephanie Laurens’s Devil’s Bride is $1.99 at amazon.

  3. Carol says:

The Penny Reid series is fabulous! I’m not much of a contemporary reader, but these just grabbed me and she can’t write them fast enough. (Really, I’m dying for the next one.) The protagonists are smart and interesting and funny and the friendship of the group of women around which the series is built is a truly wonderful part of the stories. Funny, charming, smart (did I say smart already? –they are.) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

  4. EmilyAnn says:

I think Naked In Death was first published in 1995.

  5. Crystal F. says:

My mom isn’t much of a reader, so she up and donated nearly ALL of her books last summer. I managed to save her entire Gallaghers trilogy, (and some other titles of Roberts’ and Danielle Steel) to read myself a bit later down the road.

  6. Brigitte says:

I got the Neanderthal set yesterday from Amazon Canada for $3.48. I started reading in the late afternoon and finally turned off my iPad before 1 am, when the battery was down to 7%! This morning I was up really early and finished the second book around 9 am. They were fantastic – really funny, great characters and a great story. I can’t wait to read more of Penny Reid’s books!

  7. ChrisZ says:

The first 8 of the In Death series is 1.99 each today for Kindle.

  8. SuzanneF says:

I, too, bought the Neanderthal book set, for it sounded like a fun and promising read. But at the 24% mark (Kindle)I gave up. Quite frankly I felt like I was at a carnival and riding worst rollercoaster at the fair. Days later my head is still spinning, just thinking about how I slogged through to the 24% mark. Janie’s physical description reminded me of an exaggerated caricature version of Carol Burnett’s “Mrs. Wiggins.” And it was constantly repeated/described ad nauseam. It wasn’t until around the (approx.)22% point that Janie is described as a having a “Wonder Woman” shape. And don’t get me started on the “misunderstandings” throughout. Huge eye roll. And as for those odd phrases, ‘Kinneared’ and ‘Wendell’ like WFT? Then again, I am not on social media forums (FB Twitter) so perhaps I am behind the times. (though, lol, I’m not losing sleep over not being on social media platforms.)As to the writing, meh. Grammar issues, which for me is an issue, also detracted from this DNF series.
