Help A Bitch Out

Romance Out Loud: Audiobook Recommendations, Please?

Here’s a new one – it’s a “Help a Bitch Out” for my own selfish needs. I’m home sick in bed (and all of my cats think this is purely a reason for me to pet them. I have four cats and two arms – it’s getting hairy over here) and am rather nauseated. Ergo I’m not reading anything – or wearing glasses or opening my eyes much, since doing so tends to make me want to boof. (No, I’m not in labor- baby is fine).

So I’m surfing Audible.com to download something to listen to, since I’m not sleepy but not really willing to use my eyeballs. Which romances-on-tape or even audio performers have you liked recently? I’m eager to listen to something – but holy cow, there’s a lot to choose from. Bring on the recommendations!

OOOOH, audio books! One of my favorite subjects!

I never cared much for Charlaine Harris’ Sookie series or MJD’s Betsy series until I heard them on audio. That’s when I realized I just wasn’t hearing the authors voices. Now, I can’t wait for each new release of theirs! (And I’m STILL waiting for the newest Betsy to release in audio!)

    Historical Recommendations:
Judith Ivory’s “The Indescretion”. It would have been an okay late Victorian Lady and the Cowboy book, but the narrator, Barbara Rosenblat, made this a true JOY to listen to.

Karen Marie Moning’s Highlander Book 1- “Beyond the Highland Mist” was just released on audio. Download at AudioBookStandDL.com Don’t get me started on their prices though. Downloads are almost pure profit, yet they charge more for downloads than Amazon charges for hardcover books or audio CDs! ACK!

And here’s my Top Pick recommendation:

Black Lace is now releasing through Audible.com!! Remember about a month or so ago you (or Candy) asked us for the titles of our favorite romances? Well, out of thousands of possible choices, at least five of us listed Madelynne Ellis’ “A Gentleman’s Wager”. It’s permantly on my all time favorites list and everyone that I know who has read it, has placed it on THEIR all time favorite historical list too. I haven’t listened to the audio version yet, but I intend to soon.

I have to disagree with the the J.D. Robb/Eve Dallas audio book recommendations. Not because of the writing, but because of the narration style. I’ve only listened to Naked in Death, but the narrator doesn’t employ enough variation between Eve’s voice and the third person narration. If this was written in first person POV, that would be fine. But her style makes it too easy to get confused about whose thoughts she’s reading.

One more post, if anyone is still reading this thread.

This is not so much a recomendation on a spicific book, but rather opn how to obtain them.

My library(and many more) offer audio books downloadable from your computer, instead of having to actually go into the library.  If your library offers it, it is a cheap and legal way of obtaining some of the audio books that are most popular.

Jordana, thanks for the great tip.  I searched my library’s website and low and behold they belong to NetLibrary and with a bit of time to set-up a password I was able to download an audiobook.  Girl, you get a great big gold star!  Thanks.
