  • The Love Experiment

The Love Experiment by Ainslie Paton

    Author: Ainslie Paton
Released: October 2, 2017 by Carina Press
    Genre: ,
    Series: Stubborn Hearts #1

Can you fall in love in thirty-six questions?

The closest rookie lifestyle writer Derelie Honeywell gets to megastar reporter Jackson Haley is an accidental shoulder brush in The Courier‘s elevator. That is, until the love experiment: a study designed to accelerate intimacy using thirty-six questions and four minutes of sustained eye contact.

As far as Derelie is concerned, Jack Haley has always been a man best imagined in his underwear. He’s too intimidating otherwise. But participating in the love experiment is her make-or-break chance. With another round of layoffs looming, Derelie knows holding on to her job means getting the story no matter what. Even when the what is kissing Jack like a maniac.

Jack Haley has zero interest in participating in a clickbait story. He didn’t plan on finding Derelie smart and feisty and being mesmerized by her eyes. He certainly had no intention at all of actually falling in love with her.

The conclusion to this experiment? Thirty-six questions might lead to love, but finding the answer to happily-ever-after is a lot more complicated.

Amanda says: Paton writes some great contemporaries that balance funny and sexy. I also love this cover so much.

Released: October 3, 2017 by HarperTeen
    Genre: ,

World War Two has shattered Valka’s homeland of Russia, and Valka is determined to help the effort. She knows her skills as a pilot rival the best of the men, so when an all-female aviation group forms, Valka is the first to sign up.

Flying has always meant freedom and exhilaration for Valka, but dropping bombs on German soldiers from a fragile canvas biplane is no joyride. The war is taking its toll on everyone, including the boy Valka grew up with, who is fighting for his life on the front lines.

As the war intensifies and those around her fall, Valka must decide how much she is willing to risk to defend the skies she once called home.

Inspired by the true story of the airwomen the Nazis called Night Witches, Gwen C. Katz weaves a tale of strength and sacrifice, learning to fight for yourself, and the perils of a world at war.

Amanda says: More books about fighting Nazis, please. This focuses on the airwomen during WWII known as the Night Witches.

  • Last Christmas in Paris

Last Christmas in Paris by Hazel Gaynor

    Author: Hazel Gaynor
Released: October 3, 2017 by William Morrow Paperbacks
    Genre: ,

New York Times bestselling author Hazel Gaynor has joined with Heather Webb to create this unforgettably romantic novel of the Great War.

August 1914. England is at war. As Evie Elliott watches her brother, Will, and his best friend, Thomas Harding, depart for the front, she believes—as everyone does—that it will be over by Christmas, when the trio plan to celebrate the holiday among the romantic cafes of Paris.

But as history tells us, it all happened so differently…

Evie and Thomas experience a very different war. Frustrated by life as a privileged young lady, Evie longs to play a greater part in the conflict—but how?—and as Thomas struggles with the unimaginable realities of war he also faces personal battles back home where War Office regulations on press reporting cause trouble at his father’s newspaper business. Through their letters, Evie and Thomas share their greatest hopes and fears—and grow ever fonder from afar. Can love flourish amid the horror of the First World War, or will fate intervene?

Christmas 1968. With failing health, Thomas returns to Paris—a cherished packet of letters in hand—determined to lay to rest the ghosts of his past. But one final letter is waiting for him…

Sarah says: It’s a historical epistolary novel and I’m suddenly very in the mood for this, right now, gimme.

  • Periods Gone Public

Periods Gone Public by Jennifer Weiss-Wolf

    Author: Jennifer Weiss-Wolf
Released: October 10, 2017 by Arcade Publishing
    Genre:

The first book to explore menstruation in the current cultural and political landscape and to investigate the new wave of period activism taking the world by storm.

After centuries of being shrouded in taboo and superstition, periods have gone mainstream. Seemingly overnight, a new, high-profile movement has emerged—one dedicated to bold activism, creative product innovation, and smart policy advocacy—to address the centrality of menstruation in relation to core issues of gender equality and equity.

In Periods Gone Public, Jennifer Weiss-Wolf—the woman Bustle dubbed one of the nation’s “badass menstrual activists”—explores why periods have become a prominent political cause. From eliminating the tampon tax, to enacting new laws ensuring access to affordable, safe products, menstruation is no longer something to whisper about. Weiss-Wolf shares her firsthand account in the fight for “period equity” and introduces readers to the leaders, pioneers, and everyday people who are making change happen. From societal attitudes of periods throughout history—in the United States and around the world—to grassroots activism and product innovation, Weiss-Wolf challenges readers to face stigma head-on and elevate an agenda that recognizes both the power—and the absolute normalcy—of menstruation.

Amanda says: Definitely going to read this because people (including myself) should always be more informed about women’s bodies.

The former champion bull rider has returned home to reconnect with his estranged daughter. • Hamilton’s Battalion

    Hamilton’s Battalion by Courtney Milan

    Author: Courtney Milan
Released: October 17, 2017 by Courtney Milan
    Genre: ,

Love in the time of Hamilton…

On October 14, 1781, Alexander Hamilton led a daring assault on Yorktown’s defenses and won a decisive victory in America’s fight for independence. Decades later, when Eliza Hamilton collected his soldiers’ stories, she discovered that while the war was won at Yorktown, the battle for love took place on many fronts…

    PROMISED LAND by Rose Lerner

Donning men’s clothing, Rachel left her life behind to fight the British as Corporal Ezra Jacobs–but life catches up with a vengeance when she arrests an old love as a Loyalist spy.

At first she thinks Nathan Mendelson hasn’t changed one bit: he’s annoying, he talks too much, he sticks his handsome nose where it doesn’t belong, and he’s self-righteously indignant just because Rachel might have faked her own death a little. She’ll be lucky if he doesn’t spill her secret to the entire Continental Army.

Then Nathan shares a secret of his own, one that changes everything…

THE PURSUIT OF… by Courtney Milan

What do a Black American soldier, invalided out at Yorktown, and a British officer who deserted his post have in common? Quite a bit, actually.

    * They attempted to kill each other the first time they met.
    * They’re liable to try again at some point in the five-hundred mile journey that they’re inexplicably sharing.
    * They are not falling in love with each other.
    * They are not falling in love with each other.
    * They are…. Oh, no.

THAT COULD BE ENOUGH by Alyssa Cole

Mercy Alston knows the best thing to do with pesky feelings like “love” and “hope”: avoid them at all cost. Serving as a maid to Eliza Hamilton, and an assistant in the woman’s stubborn desire to preserve her late husband’s legacy, has driven that point home for Mercy—as have her own previous heartbreaks.

When Andromeda Stiel shows up at Hamilton Grange for an interview in her grandfather’s stead, Mercy’s resolution to live a quiet, pain-free life is tested by the beautiful, flirtatious, and entirely overwhelming dressmaker.

Andromeda has staid Mercy reconsidering her worldview, but neither is prepared for love—or for what happens when it’s not enough.

Redheadedgirl says: Hamiltrash reporting for duty.

Sarah says: OBVIOUSLY. Also, I heard from Alyssa Cole during our podcast interview that Rose Lerner’s story is exquisite, and I’m so excited.

To everyone in the exclusive town of Bishops Harbor, Connecticut, Daphne and her husband, Jackson—the beautiful philanthropist and the confident real estate mogul—are a golden couple straight out of a fairytale, blessed with two lovely young daughters.

Amber’s envy could eat her alive . . . if she didn’t have a plan. Determined to become the next Mrs. Parrish, Amber uses Daphne’s compassion and caring to insinuate herself into the family’s life—the first step in a meticulous scheme to undermine her. Before long, Amber is Daphne’s closest confidante, traveling to Europe with the Parrish family, and growing closer to Jackson. But a skeleton from her past may undermine everything that Amber has worked towards, and if it is discovered, her well-laid plan may fall to pieces.

With shocking turns and dark secrets that will keep you guessing until the very end, The Last Mrs. Parrish is a fresh, juicy, and utterly addictive thriller from a diabolically imaginative talent.

Elyse says: This mystery promises a lot of twists and turns, and I hope it delivers.

  • The Offer

    The Offer by Sara Portman

    Author: Sara Portman
Released: October 24, 2017 by Lyrical Press
    Genre: ,
    Series: Brides of Beadwell #2

The award-winning author of The Reunion continues her dazzling new series with a novel of one woman’s fall from saint to sinner . . .

Lucy Betancourt’s future looks bleak. The daughter of an ailing vicar in a village with no eligible bachelors, her only hope is to find employment as a governess or companion. As she helps her childhood friend, the new Duchess of Worley, through her pregnancy, the ever-practical Lucy makes her plans. But life—in the way of the dashing Bex Brantwood—has something else in store for Lucy…

Upon meeting Bex, the duke’s cousin, Lucy offers herself up to him. But Bex is no family man looking for a governess. And Lucy is not exactly mistress material. Still, the misunderstanding ends in a kiss neither can
    forget . . .

Bex finds the proper vicar’s daughter and her most improper proposal endlessly amusing—and attractive. But, saddled with debt, he’s in no position to keep a woman, much less marry one, which is what a woman like Lucy deserves. Little does he know that even with her reputation at stake, Lucy will take the biggest gamble of her life by following her heart—straight into his arms . . .

Sarah says: The heroine in this story is a penniless vicar’s daughter currently the companion to a childhood friend who is now a duchess. The hero is equally in financial straits, so of course they’re stratospherically attracted to each other, despite everything.

  1. Bu says:

Is Have You Met Nora? a retelling of something? It sounds awfully familiar, but I feel like my brain’s not working. At first I thought Jane Eyre (Bertha Mason) but I feel like there’s something obvious and that fits more perfectly….

Also, thank you for the clarification on it being that Ben Schwartz. Jean-Ralphio telling me how to date better is one of those things I never knew I needed until I knew it existed.

  2. The Other Kate says:

C.L. Wilson’s The Sea King is FINALLY coming out on October 31st. Wilson is the author of the Tairen Soul series and my all-time favorite. How can I communicate this awesomeness? The backs of her earlier books say “A BREATHTAKING EPIC TALE OF MAGIC, PASSION, AND DESTINY!” And it’s true!

  3. CK says:

Excuse me while I go hyperventilate about Tortall!!

  4. Carol S says:

Holy crap, so many I want to read in this post! Although I think it’s a bit cruel to release a book on the last day of the month. I saw “October release” for the Eloisa James and got excited — then saw October 31 and it is torture.

  5. LML says:

Thank you so much for adding 7(!) books to my TBR.

(What is Acting on Impulse doing on this list?)

  6. JoS says:

I so want to read that Rose Lerner story!

Also, I’m currently in the middle of the first book of the Sara Portman series, The Reunion, and I have to say that Ms Portman has an excellent voice for historical romance.

  7. cleo says:

I’m sooooo excited for the new KJ Charles coming out this week – An Unsuitable Heir, the conclusion to the Sins of the City trilogy!

  8. Meg says:

I can’t read The Scandalous Flirt. The names of the hero and heroine make me think this is a slightly incestuous Gilmore Girls fanfic where someone decided to pair of Luke and Rory and just no, no, no, no.

  9. Crystal says:

I’m pretty eager for the new Joe Hill collection, Strange Weather. I love Hill’s writing.

  10. ClaireC says:

OMG NEW TORTAL BOOKS!!!!!!!! Amazon tells me there is a Numair prequel series coming out next year. Excuse me while I go binge-read all of the Lioness Rampant and Immortals series. Even better? Ms. Pierce will be on a panel at NY ComicCon this weekend! I wonder if there will be any early copies hanging around …

  11. LauraL says:

Just take my money for the Olivia Drake and Sara Portman books. And I may have to take a vacation day when Duke of Desire hits my Kindle.

  12. LJBG says:

Guys! New KJ Charles! Can barely contain myself!

  13. Vicki says:

I have Icelandic blood, could be berserker blood, and have, at times, dropped into a fighting trance. Gives you a hell of a reaction headache, let me say, and makes it hard to avoid doing things you will regret later. I am, however, able to use it in code situations where dropping into a space where time slows and you are hyper-focused on the task at hand is a good thing. And people understand if you snap at somebody who’s just handed you the wrong med or the wrong instrument (though I am getting that under control, too). So, obviously, I need to read Berserker.

  14. Sarah, you read my mind when you said that you were suddenly in the mood for that WWI historical – me too! It’s FINALLY starting to feel like fall here in North Carolina, and all of the sudden I’m craving some juicy historical romances to curl up with (side of hot toddy optional but very much welcome). It could also be that I recently devoured Sally Christie’s VERSAILLES Trilogy – so, so good – and that’s really put me in the mood for historicals. I didn’t know there was a new Maiden Lane novel coming out, either. Love that series. Thanks for the round up!

  15. PamG says:

Is it just me or is The Scandalous Flirt a candidate for cover snark. It looks like she’s shoved her leg right through the lovely silk of her gown. Also, what happened to her other foot? Also, also, is that even a normal angle for a pair of human legs?

  16. PamG says:

I know! Maybe there’s another girl under the silk!

  17. Twinks says:

So many interesting books! This post has really been rather expensive for me XD

@Bu The plot of Have You Met Nora reminded me of the movie Imitation of Life where one of the characters is a black woman posing as white. Here’s the Imdb link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052918/

Re: That Scandalous Flirt — I’m not totally sure because it’s hard to tell from the opposite angle, but I think I do sit like that. Not in a dress like that though.
