September’s New Releases

September is here! And I probably could have done this post with just my input because it’s a really expensive one for me. I will also not apologize for the amount of fantasy YA coming out that I want to get my grabby hands on. But these new releases are by no means an exhaustive list of amazing books, so here are a few more popular choices to stick on your TBR pile:

  • Sarah J. Maas returns to her Throne of Glass series with Tower of Dawn ( A | BN | K | G | AB ).
  • Marie Lu’s Warcross ( A | BN | K | G | AB ) sounds kickass!
  • Autoboyography by Christina Lauren ( A | BN | K | G | AB ) is a forbidden LGBT YA romance.
  • Charlaine Harris releases another Aurora Teagarden cozy mystery with Sleep Like a Baby ( A | BN | K | G | AB ).
  • Better get your library holds in for What Happened by Hillary Rodham Clinton ( A | BN | K | G | AB ).
  • The Final Score ( A | BN | K | G | AB ) is book thirteen in Jaci Burton’s Play-by-Play series.
  • Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series continues with Archangel’s Viper ( A | BN | K | G | AB ).

What books are you definitely buying this month?

Until then, Caleb is content to be stuck on an island with CloudFest’s gorgeous director Faith Harper. . .

The daughter of a famous rock star, Faith knows all about fame, fortune, and hot flings that aren’t meant to last longer than a few good songs. What begins as a carefree distraction deepens into something real. But is Caleb ready to put his celebrity behind him and give life in the slow lane with Faith a chance?

Maria’s sudden reappearance threatens it all, and forces Louise to reconnect with everyone she’d severed ties with to escape the past. But as she tries to piece together exactly what happened that night, Louise discovers there’s more to the story than she ever knew. • Girls Made of Snow and Glass

Girls Made of Snow and Glass by Melissa Bashardoust

    Author: Melissa Bashardoust
Released: September 5, 2017 by Flatiron Books
    Genre: ,

Frozen meets The Bloody Chamber in this feminist fantasy retelling of the Snow White fairytale as you’ve never heard it before, tracing the relationship of two young women doomed to be rivals from the start: the beautiful princess and stepmother queen.

At sixteen, Mina’s mother is dead, her magician father is vicious, and her silent heart has never beat with love for anyone—has never beat at all, in fact, but she’d always thought that fact normal. She never guessed that her father cut out her heart and replaced it with one of glass. When she moves to Whitespring Castle and sees its king for the first time, Mina forms a plan: win the king’s heart with her beauty, become queen, and finally know love. The only catch is that she’ll have to become a stepmother.

Fifteen-year-old Lynet looks just like her late mother, and one day she discovers why: a magician created her out of snow in the dead queen’s image, at her father’s order. But despite being the dead queen made flesh, Lynet would rather be like her fierce and regal stepmother, Mina. She gets her wish when her father makes Lynet queen of the southern territories, displacing Mina. Now Mina is starting to look at Lynet with something like hatred, and Lynet must decide what to do—and who to be—to win back the only mother she’s ever known…or else defeat her once and for all.

Entwining the stories of both Lynet and Mina in the past and present, Girls Made of Snow and Glass traces the relationship of two young women doomed to be rivals from the start. Only one can win all, while the other must lose everything—unless both can find a way to reshape themselves and their story.

Amanda says: Described as a “feminist fantasy reimagining of the Snow White fairytale.”

As various determined gentlemen vie for her attention at balls, routs, picnics and parties, Elisabeth finds herself embroiled with a charming rake, a mysterious nabob, and an elegant neighbor. • An Excess Male

An Excess Male by Maggie Shen King

    Author: Maggie Shen King
Released: September 12, 2017 by Harper Voyager
    Genre:

From debut author Maggie Shen King, An Excess Male is the chilling dystopian tale of politics, inequality, marriage, love, and rebellion, set in a near-future China, that further explores the themes of the classic The Handmaid’s Tale and When She Woke.

Under the One Child Policy, everyone plotted to have a son.

Now 40 million of them can’t find wives. China’s One Child Policy and its cultural preference for male heirs have created a society overrun by 40 million unmarriageable men. By the year 2030, more than twenty-five percent of men in their late thirties will not have a family of their own.

An Excess Male is one such leftover man’s quest for love and family under a State that seeks to glorify its past mistakes and impose order through authoritatian measures, reinvigorated Communist ideals, and social engineering.Wei-guo holds fast to the belief that as long as he continues to improve himself, his small business, and in turn, his country, his chance at love will come. He finally saves up the dowry required to enter matchmaking talks at the lowest rung as a third husband—the maximum allowed by law. Only a single family—one harboring an illegal spouse—shows interest, yet with May-ling and her two husbands, Wei-guo feels seen, heard, and connected to like never before. But everyone and everything—walls, streetlights, garbage cans—are listening, and men, excess or not, are dispensable to the State. Wei-guo must reach a new understanding of patriotism and test the limits of his love and his resolve in order to save himself and this family he has come to hold dear.

In Maggie Shen King’s startling and beautiful debut, An Excess Male looks to explore the intersection of marriage, family, gender, and state in an all too plausible future.

Amanda says: A debut novel where China’s One Child Policy has created an excess of men and not enough women.

  • Temporary

    Temporary by Sarina Bowen

    Author: Sarina Bowen
Released: September 12, 2017 by Rennie Road Books
    Genre: ,

The most beautiful man I’ve ever seen is the same one who can ruin everything.

The first time I lay eyes on Callan Walker, I know he’ll be trouble. With his smug grin, hot Aussie accent and thousand dollar shoes, he’s just the kind of rich guy who always gets what he wants.

And he wants two things: a night of sin, and my cooperation as he outmaneuvers his powerful mother to take control of his uncle’s estate.

I can’t afford either one. I’m the only thing standing between my little sister and the foster care system. He may have money and charm on his side, but I have something even more powerful — pure desperation. This temp job at his mother’s company can become a full time job for me. It has to.

But when Callan’s eyes rake over my body, sometimes I forget my obligations. His piercing gaze finds the fun, optimistic girl I used to be and not the tired person I’ve become.

And it works–if only for a moment. Our night together was a mistake. I can’t afford to get sucked into his high-powered family’s treachery. But the closer I get to Callan, the more layers I find beneath those expensive clothes. Though I can’t forget this is temporary. He’s temporary. I have too much to lose.

Too bad my foolish heart didn’t get the memo…

Amanda says: I’ve enjoyed both of these authors, so I’m excited to see what they can do together.

  • Jane, Unlimited

    Jane, Unlimited by Kristin Cashore

    Author: Kristin Cashore
Released: September 19, 2017 by Kathy Dawson Books
    Genre: ,

The highly anticipated standalone from the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of the Graceling Realm series—a kaleidoscopic novel about grief, adventure, storytelling, and finding yourself in a world of seemingly infinite choices.

Jane has lived an ordinary life, raised by her aunt Magnolia—an adjunct professor and deep sea photographer. Jane counted on Magnolia to make the world feel expansive and to turn life into an adventure. But Aunt Magnolia was lost a few months ago in Antarctica on one of her expeditions.

Now, with no direction, a year out of high school, and obsessed with making umbrellas that look like her own dreams (but mostly just mourning her aunt), she is easily swept away by Kiran Thrash—a glamorous, capricious acquaintance who shows up and asks Jane to accompany her to a gala at her family’s island mansion called Tu Reviens.

Jane remembers her aunt telling her: “If anyone ever invites to you to Tu Reviens, promise me that you’ll go.” With nothing but a trunkful of umbrella parts to her name, Jane ventures out to the Thrash estate. Then her story takes a turn, or rather, five turns. What Jane doesn’t know is that Tu Reviens will offer her choices that can ultimately determine the course of her untethered life. But at Tu Reviens, every choice comes with a reward, or a price.

Amanda says: I’m a big fan of Cashore’s writing ever since her Graceling series.

  • The Girl in the Picture

The Girl in the Picture by Kerry Barrett

    Author: Kerry Barrett
Released: September 20, 2017 by HQ Digital
    Genre: ,

Two women. One house. Centuries of secrets.

    East Sussex Coast, 1855

Violet Hargreaves is the lonely daughter of a widowed industrialist, and an aspiring Pre-Raphaelite painter. One day, the naïve eighteen-year-old meets Edwin; a mysterious and handsome man on the beach, who promises her a world beyond the small costal village she’s trapped in. But after ignoring warning about Edwin, a chain of terrible events begins to unfold for Violet…

    East Sussex Coast, 2016

For thriller-writer Ella Daniels, the house on the cliff is the perfect place to overcome writer’s block, where she decides to move with her small family. But there’s a strange atmosphere that settles once they move in – and rumours of historical murders next door begin to emerge. One night, Ella uncovers a portrait of a beautiful young girl named Violet Hargreaves, who went missing at the same time as the horrific crimes, and Ella becomes determined to find out what happened there 160 years ago. And in trying to lay Violet’s ghost to rest, Ella must face ghosts of her own…

This haunting timeslip tale is perfect for fans of Kate Riordan, Tracy Rees, Kate Morton and Lucinda Riley.

Redheadedgirl says: Temporal split focus, which I LOVE. The historical heroine is a pre-Raphaelite painter, and that is a fascinating movement right there.

  • An Enchantment of Ravens

An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson

    Author: Margaret Rogerson
Released: September 26, 2017 by Margaret K. McElderry Books
    Genre: ,

A skilled painter must stand up to the ancient power of the faerie courts—even as she falls in love with a faerie prince—in this gorgeous debut novel.

Isobel is a prodigy portrait artist with a dangerous set of clients: the sinister fair folk, immortal creatures who cannot bake bread, weave cloth, or put a pen to paper without crumbling to dust. They crave human Craft with a terrible thirst, and Isobel’s paintings are highly prized. But when she receives her first royal patron—Rook, the autumn prince—she makes a terrible mistake. She paints mortal sorrow in his eyes—a weakness that could cost him his life.

Furious and devastated, Rook spirits her away to the autumnlands to stand trial for her crime. Waylaid by the Wild Hunt’s ghostly hounds, the tainted influence of the Alder King, and hideous monsters risen from barrow mounds, Isobel and Rook depend on one another for survival. Their alliance blossoms into trust, then love—and that love violates the fair folks’ ruthless laws. Now both of their lives are forfeit, unless Isobel can use her skill as an artist to fight the fairy courts. Because secretly, her Craft represents a threat the fair folk have never faced in all the millennia of their unchanging lives: for the first time, her portraits have the power to make them feel.

Amanda says: Come on, look at that cover. I’m also a sucker for anything with the fae.

    Meet cute…

Run for the hills—temporarily. That’s Colbie Albright’s plan when she flees New York for San Francisco. Wrangling her crazy family by day and writing a bestselling YA fantasy series by night has taken its toll. In short, Colbie’s so over it that she’s under it. She’s also under the waters of a historic San Francisco fountain within an hour of arrival. Fortunately, the guy who fishes Colbie out has her looking forward to Christmas among strangers. But she’s pretty sure Spencer Baldwin won’t be a stranger for long.

    Make merry…

Spence’s commitment to hiding from the Ghosts of Relationships Past means he doesn’t have to worry about the powerful—okay, crazy hot chemistry—he’s got with Colbie. Just because she can laugh at anything, especially herself… just because she’s gorgeous and a great listener just because she gets Spence immediately doesn’t mean he won’t be able to let Colbie go. Does it?

    and hope for a miracle.

Now the clock’s ticking for Colbie and Spence: Two weeks to cut loose. Two weeks to fall hard. Two weeks to figure out how to make this Christmas last a lifetime.

Elyse says: Okay it’s a little early for Christmas, but I love Jill Shalvis and need this now.

  • I, Eliza Hamilton

I, Eliza Hamilton by Susan Holloway Scott

    Author: Susan Holloway Scott
Released: September 26, 2017 by Kensington
    Genre: ,

In this beautifully written novel of historical fiction, bestselling author Susan Holloway Scott tells the story of Alexander Hamilton’s wife, Eliza—a fascinating, strong-willed heroine in her own right and a key figure in one of the most gripping periods in American history.

“Love is not easy with a man chosen by Fate for greatness . . .”

As the daughter of a respected general, Elizabeth Schuyler is accustomed to socializing with dignitaries and soldiers. But no visitor to her parents’ home has affected her so strongly as Alexander Hamilton, a charismatic, ambitious aide to George Washington. They marry quickly, and despite the tumult of the American Revolution, Eliza is confident in her brilliant husband and in her role as his helpmate. But it is in the aftermath of war, as Hamilton becomes one of the country’s most important figures, that she truly comes into her own.

In the new capital, Eliza becomes an adored member of society, respected for her fierce devotion to Hamilton as well as her grace. Behind closed doors, she astutely manages their expanding household, and assists her husband with his political writings. Yet some challenges are impossible to prepare for. Through public scandal, betrayal, personal heartbreak, and tragedy, she is tested again and again. In the end, it will be Eliza’s indomitable strength that makes her not only Hamilton’s most crucial ally in life, but his most loyal advocate after his death, determined to preserve his legacy while pursuing her own extraordinary path through the nation they helped shape together.

Redheadedgirl says: Yet another Hamitlon tie-in, but focused on Eliza (who is the best).

But there two predators stalk amidst the manicured gardens and fine old homes.

Heiress Mae Malveaux rules society with an angel’s smile and a heart of stone. She made up her mind long ago that nobody would decide her fate. To have the pleasure she craves, control is paramount, especially control of the men Mae attracts like moths to a flame.

  1. Moxie and An Enchantment of Ravens look suuuper intriguing. Ack, my TBR is already way too big!

  2. cayenne says:

I’m both looking forward to and dreading Laura Florand’s A Kiss in Lavender. Looking forward to because: Lucien! Finally!! Dreading because the amazing Ms. Florand announced that she’s taking a year-long break after this book, so it means an impending drought 🙁 I foresee lots of re-reads over the year.

  3. Lostshadows says:

Alas, I think September 5th is going to wipe out my book budget for the month.

There’s a new October Daye coming out, The Brightest Fell, and it’s hardcover.

Also, there’s the two volume LoA edition of Le Guin’s Hainish series. I’m trying to talk myself out of preordering it and failing miserably. (Last I checked Amazon had it for $50, which is a great price for LoA.)

  4. JayneH says:

I’m also excited for “King of Code” by CD Reiss, she’s a one click author for me.

Piper Drake releases “Contracted Defense”, the third book in her Safeguard Series this month.

“Five” By JA Huss This ties together two of her series and has been highly anticipated for a couple of years.

  5. Ariadna says:

    Moxie sounds super fun!

This is gonna be an ~interesting~ month due to:

    * FORTITUDE SMASHED by Taylor Brooke (out Sept 21) – A detective and a thief find out that they are destined to fall in love

    * THE RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR MEDIATING MYTH AND MAGIC by FT Lukens (out Sept 7) – A human dude works at the office tasked with keeping the realms of reality and myth separate. Trouble is brewing, though, and a new guy just moved to town…

    * CAUGHT IN BETWEEN by Tamryn Eradani (out Sept 11) – Part 8 in a serial about two kinky dudes.

    * FOXGLOVE COPSE by Alex Beecroft (out Sept 4) – A guy moves into town and tries to figure out if the guy he’s attracted to has anything to do with a crime wave

    * THEY BOTH DIE AT THE END by Adam Silvera (out Sept 5) – two guys meet after finding out thar they will die on he same day.

    * REBEL SEOUL (out Sept 14)- YA set in futuristic!Korea featuring a guy falling for his partner and considering rebelling against the govt. Has been described as Pacific Rim w/an all-POC cast.

    * BLOODGUARD by Megan Erickson (out Sept 12) – A warrior vampire falls for the woman destined to be his brother’s mate.

So, yeah, my wallet’s gonna be feeling the pain this month. #LOL

  6. DonnaMarie says:

I thought this month was going to be all about Guild Hunters & Sherry Thomas. Boy, was I wrong. Looks like I’ll be detouring with An Excess Male and The Girl In The Picture. While sipping a Blade Rummer. I just purchased a frat party sized bottle of Bacardi at Costco. Gotta use it some how. Damn impulse buys.

Also, Anna Lee Huber’s newest, This Side of Murder, releases at the end of the month. Post WWI intrigue with a chance of romance? All in.

  7. Julia aka mizzelle says:

I agree about September 5th being the wallet destroyer… besides the Seanan McGuire’s Brightest Fell, first hardcover for the October Daye series, there’s also a new entry in Max Gladstone’s Craft Sequence books called Ruin of Angels.

And September 12th, Rose Lerner goes back to Lively St Lemeston with “A Taste of Honey” with the sweet shop owner and his assistant.

  8. Ariadna says:

@Juliaakamizzelle I snagged A TASTE OF HONEY a couple of weeks ago when she had it on sale for $0.99.

  9. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Looking forward to the Bowen–she’s one of my favorites, even with a co-writer–and the Reiss (who seems to be moving away from the hardcore bdsm-themed novels she has published in the past). What I really can’t wait for is Bowen’s next True North book, BOUNTIFUL.

  10. Michelle says:

    E. Lockhart’s Genuine Fraud comes out on Tuesday, 9/5. It’s YA psychological suspense. I loved We Were Liars, so I’m refreshing-refreshing-refreshing to see if it’s shipped yet!

  11. LauraL says:

I’m feeling a little giddy about The Duke’s Bridle Path by Grace Burrowes and Theresa Romain coming on September 12. Two of my favorite authors and horses.

Monica McCarty is a good storyteller and I love the Highland Guard stories so I may have to try Going Dark the next time I need to a suspense fix. Don’t know if my information security training would help or hinder my enjoyment of King of Code but I may give it a read after I see a few reviews. A female hacker is intriguing.

  12. Crystal says:

I had Leia: Princess of Alderaan waiting on my Kindle today. It had that rare Friday release date. It’s written by Claudia Gray, who also wrote the Leia novel from last year, Bloodline, which was EXCELLENT. If you haven’t read it, it is basically House of Cards in space, with the added bonus of getting inside Leia’s head and seeing how she reckons with the legacies of both of her fathers, Bail Organa and Darth Vader. I love Gray’s writing, she gives great sci-fi (Defy the Stars was one of my favorite reads of this year), and I cannot wait to see Leia as a baby rebel and spy.

Tuesday will also be bringing me Godsgrave, the sequel to Nevernight, by Jay Kristoff. I ADORE the Illuminae series that he writes with Amie Kaufman, and Nevernight, the first in this series, was one of the best things I’ve read in the past year. I got your female rage right the hell here, and hello, it is basically “Assassin’s Hogwarts”; you don’t pass that up. Being honest, I bought Nevernight nearly straight away when it came out last year, and then held onto it for a few months. I knew it was violent, I knew it was hella stabby, and I knew I needed to save it for a time when I feeling a bit ragey. Suffice to say I read it about mid-January, right about the same time as certain sparsely-attended inauguration (I actually think I finished it that night). That said, I’ve been salivating for Godsgrave for months, so my body is ready.

Thanks for the reminder about There’s Someone Inside Your House. I’ve been meaning to preorder that baby, and oh, lookie, there we are, all clicked now. It’s coming out just in time to be involved in my favorite part of October, which is reading scary shit.

I’m pretty interested in I, Eliza (I’m Hamiltrash, sooo…), Unforgivable Love (a Dangerous Liasions retelling in 1940s Harlem, why yes, I think I will), One Dark Throne (I did really enjoy Three Dark Crowns), and Chasing Christmas Eve (Shalvis tends to be hit or miss for me, but that last Christmas one she did, The Trouble with Mistletoe? I was reading it right at Christmas and it was perfect right then and in general, I still crack up thinking about the cat). But I think those are going to be library selections. Let’s just say that my preorder list is bananapants. I read it off to my husband the other day and he threw socks at me.

  13. Amanda says:

@DonnaMarie: That’s us, showing you books you never knew you needed!

  14. Deborah says:

I love a good soulmate-identifying mark/device trope, so many thanks @Ariadna (#5) for FORTITUDE SMASHED by Taylor Brooke. Three weeks is so far away.

  15. Ariadna says:

@Deborah Ah, you’re welcome! I’m a total sucker for that trope as well. (Hence the lighting fast one-click when I heard about it.) :D!

  16. Kareni says:

What tempting choices! This is a dangerous post, indeed.

  17. Leigh Kramer says:

I got an ARC for Girls Made Of Snow And Glass and it is AMAZING. The author took Snow White and made it completely her own and I cannot get over how feminist and empowering it is.

  18. julia says:

So, apparently I’m just going to quit my job so I can read all month.

I’ve been having problems reading adult romance both contemporary (who’d he vote for?) and historical (how does he feel about India?). But I’ve got plenty YA, SFF, thrillers/mystery and lit fic to choose from here!

I knew I was picking up the new Sherry Thomas at a signing at Book People on Tuesday, but I was not counting on all of these other books:

Friend Request, An Excess Male, and Unforgivable Love top the list. But the list continues!
An Enchantment of Ravens (I too love the fae), Moxie (which reminds me I still need to read Female of the Species), and Jane, Unlimited.

And why haven’t I read Three Dark Crowns yet, so I can read this one…

Better get started on that resignation letter.

  19. Karin says:

I’ll definitely go for the Jane Ashford, even though I am already several books behind on her last series about the Gresham family, which is great.
Also “The Stolen Letters”(release date 9/4) which is a novella in the Lady Arianna historical mystery series by Andrea Penrose, aka Cara Elliott. The first 3 Lady Arianna books btw, are loaded with outstanding and unusual chocolate recipes, because the hero is a botanist whose specialty is Theobroma cacao and the heroine is a chef who is compiling a book of chocolate recipes.

It’s probably not too soon to be reading Hamilton background books either, because I got tickets to see Hamilton in January! I’m very excited to take my two nieces to see it!

  20. Cristie says:

A Taste of Honey is still 99c in case anyone still hasn’t one clicked it

  21. […] releases: Tor.com (genre benders, fantasy, scifi) and Smart Bitches […]
