Sports Contemporaries with Rugby Players, MMA Fighters, & More!

  • Knowing the Score

Knowing the Score by Kat Latham

Knowing the Score by Kat Latham is $1.99! This is a contemporary sports romance – set in the world of rugby. I mentioned this book on a previous podcast episode. It has a 3.7 average, and readers at GR liked the humor and the dialogue between the hero and heroine (though some reviews warn of a slow start to the story). Kat Latham also made an appearance in this year’s DABWAHA tournament!

Rugby player Spencer Bailey is determined to win a spot on England’s World Cup team. But with a month break before the selectors start watching him, he’s eager to have fun with a woman who knows the score: the relationship will end when rugby season begins. The lovely American Caitlyn Sweeney seems perfect for the role of temporary lover, since her visa will run out soon anyway.

Caitlyn works for an international disaster relief organization and can handle the world’s worst crises, but she flinches from her own. Her past has left her with a fear of intimacy so deep that she has trouble getting close to anyone—until she meets sexy Spencer. His hot body and easygoing nature are too much for even her to resist.

Neither Caitlyn nor Spencer expects to fall hard for each other. But with their relationship deadline approaching, the old rules of the game seem less important than before…until past secrets surface, challenging everything they thought they knew about each other.

  • In Your Corner

In Your Corner by Sarah Castille

In Your Corner by Sarah Castille is $2.99 right now. This is an erotic contemporary with a hero who is a mixed martial arts champion. It was picked as one of Amazon’s Best Romance Books of the Year last year, and was also a PW Best Summer Read. It has a 4+ star average on GR, and readers who liked it enjoyed the “second chance after a bad breakup” story, and the very, very alpha hero.

“You have to go. I won’t be able to control myself. I’ve wanted you so bad for so long and after I’ve been in the cage…I can’t think straight.” He gives a guttural groan and his fist clenches on my hip.

Primitive. Primal. His need speaks to me. I tighten my grip on his neck and rock up to kiss him. He takes over. His kiss is hard and demanding.

“Mine.” His voice is raw, savage and for a moment I truly believe he may lose control.

    He rules in the ring

Two years ago, Jake and Amanda were going hot and heavy. But when Jake wanted more, Amanda walked away. Jake immersed himself in mixed martial arts, living life on the edge. But that didn’t dull the pain of Amanda’s rejection-until a chance encounter throws them together.

A high-powered lawyer, Amanda was a no-strings-attached kind of girl. But two years after her breakup with Jake, she still hasn’t found anyone who gets her heart pumping the way he did. And then he shows up in her boardroom, hot as sin and needing help…

But can he rule her heart?

Jake is darker, sexier, and impossible to resist. As their chemistry builds, Amanda’s not sure if she can stay in control, or if she’s finally willing to let him claim her body and soul.

  • The Year We Fell Down

The Year We Fell Down by Sarina Bowen

The Year We Fell Down by Sarina Bowen is FREE right now. Also, several of Bowen’s books are available for $3.99 or less! Reader Cat emailed us about her love for this book and said:

I LOVED Sarina Bowen’s Coming in From the Cold in that bundle of new authors Harlequin did last year, and I’ve been really excited to check out her other books, even if I’m not super into New Adult (mostly because I don’t really want to read about angsty college dating; I’m two years post-college and still have never been involved with anyone–instead, I look ahead to my future, and read historicals about spinsters in their late twenties. Optimism.) ANYWAY the books in this series are regularly $2.99 which is pretty cheap, but I held off just in case so I’m very pleased about the price drop. (Minus the part where I have a horrible feeling I’ll be compelled to buy Book 2, and the novella, and pre-order Book 3 of this series regarding of their price!)

OMG THIS BOOK [imagine Good Book Noise here]. As I commented on Sarina Bowen’s Facebook post about the sale, I devoured-yet-savored this like I would cheesecake. I whipped through this thing on a Saturday night because it was so engrossing but at the same time I just marveled at it, like, “How is this book so good?” Bowen does a great job of portraying disability in romance, and just like Coming in from the Cold she took a plot angle that makes the whole romance genre seem fresh again–I mean, I love the concept of genre and its constrictions and its tropes (I swear having a guaranteed happy ending is my favorite thing about romance, too many nasty shocks from mysteries and then of course fantasy…I’m a bit of a genre geek) but I love when authors can play with those tropes (cough Courtney Milan cough) or create something fresh and exciting even within various constraints.

The sport she loves is out of reach. The boy she loves wants someone else.

    What now?

She expected to start Harkness College as a varsity ice hockey player. But a serious accident means that Corey Callahan will start school in a wheelchair instead.

Across the hall, in the other handicapped-accessible dorm room, lives the too-delicious-to-be real Adam Hartley, another would-be hockey star with his leg broken in two places. He’s way out of Corey’s league.

    Also, he’s taken.

Nevertheless, an unlikely alliance blooms between Corey and Hartley in the “gimp ghetto” of McHerrin Hall. Over tequila, perilously balanced dining hall trays, and video games, the two cope with disappointments that nobody else understands.

They’re just friends, of course, until one night when things fall apart. Or fall together. All Corey knows is that she’s falling. Hard.

But will Hartley set aside his trophy girl to love someone as broken as Corey? If he won’t, she will need to find the courage to make a life for herself at Harkness — one which does not revolve around the sport she can no longer play, or the brown-eyed boy who’s afraid to love her back.

  • Once Perfect

    Once Perfect by Cecy Robson

Once Perfect by Cecy Robson is 99c at most vendors! This book has everything but the kitchen sink. The hero is an MMA fighter and was formerly in the military. There are class differences between the hero and heroine, and it’s technically a workplace romance as the heroine waitresses at the club where the hero works as a bouncer. While some loved the book’s heaping helpings of drama, others mentioned being unable to connect with the story. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

His life was never easy. Hers wasn’t supposed to be this hard. They come from different worlds, but fate lures them together in a way neither expected in Cecy Robson’s raw, steamy series debut—perfect for fans of Monica Murphy and J. Lynn.

Evelyn Preston’s future once looked perfect—until her wealthy father was caught in an embezzlement scandal and took his own life. Alone and struggling to pay her college tuition and bills, Evelyn finds a job as a waitress at the ultra-hip nightclub Excess, where she used to have more in common with the privileged private-school clientele than her fellow staff members. But something attracts her to the sexy six-foot-four bouncer and underground MMA fighter Mateo Tres Santos. Although they’ve led different lives, their troubled pasts bonds them in both survival and love.

Mateo is ex-army who wound up in prison for assaulting the man who harmed his sister. Now he’s feeling the same protective impulse for this petite blond waitress. When Evelyn experiences a panic attack at the club, Mateo comes to her rescue. And when Mateo is wounded shielding her from a brawl, Evelyn returns the favor and comes to his aid.

As their attraction intensifies, Mateo is determined to find out what nightmares are lurking in Evelyn’s past—even if that means tackling his own to save her.

    Love Kat Latham books!

  2. Fang says:

Big fan of Cecy Robson. Her books are character driven and usually balanced well between drama and humor. I really enjoyed this book and her entire shattered past series rocks! Looking forward to her new spinoff series about the OBrien Family releasing in November.

  3. Cerulean says:

Sarina Bowen’s books are amazing. I love ALL of her books and I’m not really a fan of New Adult. But she’s an excellent writer and her characters are so real. You’d really be missing out if you didn’t get these 🙂

  4. Maria F says:

Kresley Cole’s Macreive is on sale at amazon for $1.99.

  5. Katie Lynn says:

I can recommend all these books, with the exception of Once Perfect, which I did pick up. I have the second and third in that series that I picked up for free/on sale earlier this year, so now I can read them in order!
