GLBT New Adult & YA with Agatha Christie Retellings, & a Nora Roberts Audible Deal

  • Trust the Focus

Trust the Focus by Megan Erickson

Trust the Focus by Megan Erickson is 99c! This is a M/M new adult romance was a DABWAHA nominee this year and was mentioned on a previous podcast with Joyfully Jay. This is also a road trip, friends-to-lovers romance! Readers say the romance is touching and emotional, though some felt it was more YA than NA. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads.

With his college graduation gown expertly pitched into the trash, Justin Akron is ready for the road trip he planned with his best friend Landry— and ready for one last summer of escape from his mother’s controlling grip. Climbing into the Winnebago his father left him, they set out across America in search of the sites his father had captured through the lens of his Nikon.

As an aspiring photographer, Justin can think of no better way to honor his father’s memory than to scatter his ashes at the sites he held sacred. And there’s no one Justin would rather share the experience with more than Landry.

But Justin knows he can’t escape forever. Eventually he’ll have to return home and join his mother’s Senate campaign. Nor can he escape the truth of who he is, and the fact that he’s in love with his out-and-proud travel companion.

Admitting what he wants could hurt his mother’s conservative political career. But with every click of his shutter and every sprinkle of ash, Justin can’t resist Landry’s pull. And when the truth comes into focus, neither is prepared for the secrets the other is hiding.

  • Ten

    Ten by Gretchen McNeil

Ten by Gretchen McNeil is $1.99! This is a YA mystery/thriller with some horror thrown in, and it’s a retelling of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. Some readers weren’t too keen on the writing style, but many thought this was a great addition to the YA horror/thriller genre, which people seem to want more of in general.

    SHHHH!
    Don’t spread the word!
Three-day weekend. Party at White Rock House on Henry Island.
You do NOT want to miss it.

It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives—an exclusive house party on Henry Island. Best friends Meg and Minnie each have their reasons for being there (which involve T.J., the school’s most eligible bachelor) and look forward to three glorious days of boys, booze and fun-filled luxury.

But what they expect is definitely not what they get, and what starts out as fun turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine.

Suddenly people are dying, and with a storm raging, the teens are cut off from the outside world. No electricity, no phones, no internet, and a ferry that isn’t scheduled to return for two days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine?

  • Firelight

    Firelight by Sophie Jordan

Firelight by Sophie Jordan is $1.99 right now. This is the first book in the Firelight series, which is a YA paranormal/urban fantasy series with dragons. The heroine is descendent from dragons, ya’ll! Readers liked the addition of dragons and how the lore fit into the story. However, some felt the romance was a little subpar compared to the rest of the story. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

With her rare ability to breathe fire, Jacinda is special among the darki – the descendants of dragons with the power to shift into human form.

But when Jacinda’s rebelliousness forces her family to flee to the human world, her drake spirit starts to fade. If it is lost, she will remain as a human. The only thing that revives it is gorgeous, elusive Will… whose family hunts her kind.

Jacinda can’t resist getting closer to him. Even if it mans risking the draki’s most closely-guarded secret – and her life.

  • Chasing Fire

    Chasing Fire by Nora Roberts

Chasing Fire by Nora Roberts is today’s Audible Daily Deal at $4.95 – but that price is good for today only! This is an unabridged audiobook narrated by Rebecca Lowman, and in total it’s a little over 15 hours long. Road trip! Chasing Fire is romantic suspense about forest fire smoke jumpers, the firefighters who jump into out-of-control wildfires to contain them. Roberts always includes a lot of detail about the professions she includes in her books – I think of them as top-shelf competence p0rn – and this one is no exception. The audiobook has a 4.2-star average with several thousand reviews of both the story and the narrator.

Little else in life is as dangerous as fire jumping. But there’s also little else as thrilling—at least to Rowan Tripp. Being a Missoula smoke jumper is in Rowan’s blood: her father is a legend in the field. At this point, returning to the wilds of Montana for the season feels like coming home—even with reminders of the partner she lost last season still lingering in the air.

One of the best of this year’s rookie crop, Gulliver Curry is a walking contradiction, a hotshot firefighter with a big vocabulary and a winter job at a kids’ arcade. And though Rowan, as a rule, doesn’t hook up with other smoke jumpers, Gull is convinced he can change her mind…

But everything is thrown off balance, when a dark presence lashes out against Rowan, looking to blame someone for last year’s tragedy. Rowan knows she can’t complicate things with Gull—any distractions in the air or on the ground could be lethal. But if she doesn’t find someone she can lean on when the heat gets intense, her life may go down in flames.

I bought “Trust the Focus” as a result of that podcast. I really enjoyed it. While I sometimes had the urge to slap both guys for acting, well, like young 20-somethings who don’t want to talk about stuff and just storm off in a huff and sulk, I enjoyed the story a great deal. Let’s face it, we all need more GLBTQIA+ road trip romance in our lives. …. SB Sarah, would you do a post specifically for GLBTQIA+ road trip romances?

  2. SB Sarah says:

@Heather S: I’d be glad to – but are there enough to constitute a list? How many have you found?

  3. Lindsay says:

I really enjoyed Ten and like a lot of Gretchen McNeil’s other YA/horror books a lot lot. My only sad is that Get Even, her latest, is only Part 1 so it ends on a cliffhanger.

And Then There Were None is one of my favourite books ever to date and I felt Ten was a really enjoyable, updated spin on it.

  4. cleo says:

Quick rape trigger warning for Trust the Focus (it happens off page and before the story starts but is mentioned).

I didn’t like Trust the Focus as much as the rest of the world seemed to – I thought a lot of the serious issues raised during the story were kind of glossed over or magically resolved to get to the hfn. But it’s worth buying on sale – I still enjoyed it.

@HeatherS – I can only think of a few queer road trip stories. There’s Special Delivery by Heidi Cullinan and Astrid Amara has a holiday novella that’s a road trip (but it’s not my fave by her). And I remember reading a review of an ff road trip contemporary. And that’s all I can come up with now.
