  • Burn Zone

    Burn Zone by Annabeth Albert

Burn Zone by Annabeth Albert is $1.99! This is book one in the Hotshots series, which features firefighter and smoke jumper heroes. I know we have a few Albert fans in the Bitchery. Have you read this one?

Introducing Annabeth Albert’s Hotshots series—the emotions and intensity of Chicago Fire with the raw, natural elements of Man vs. Wild.

Danger lurks everywhere for Central Oregon’s fire crews, but the biggest risk of all might be losing their hearts…

Smoke jumper Lincoln Reid is speechless to see Jacob Hartman among his squad’s new recruits. Linc had promised his late best friend he’d stay away from his little brother. And yet here Jacob is…and almost instantly, the same temptation Linc has always felt around him is causing way too many problems.

Jacob gets everyone’s concerns, but he’s waited years for his shot at joining the elite smoke jumping team, hoping to honor his brother’s memory. He’s ready to tackle any challenge Linc throws his way, and senses the chemistry between them—chemistry Linc insists on ignoring—is still alive and kicking. This time, Jacob’s determined to get what he wants.

Close quarters and high stakes make it difficult for Linc to keep his resolve, never mind do so while also making sure the rookie’s safe. But the closer they get, the more Linc’s plan to leave at the end of the season risks him breaking another promise: the one his heart wants to make to Jacob.

  • The Kingdom

    The Kingdom by Jess Rothenberg

The Kingdom by Jess Rothenberg is $2.99! My friend, who exclusively reads YA and had 600+ titles in our former apartment, really enjoyed this one. I trust her opinion implicitly. She says it’s unsettling in the best way and is Westworld meet Disney princesses.

Welcome to the Kingdom… where ‘Happily Ever After’ isn’t just a promise, but a rule.

Glimmering like a jewel behind its gateway, The Kingdom™ is an immersive fantasy theme park where guests soar on virtual dragons, castles loom like giants, and bioengineered species—formerly extinct—roam free.

Ana is one of seven Fantasists, beautiful “princesses” engineered to make dreams come true. When she meets park employee Owen, Ana begins to experience emotions beyond her programming including, for the first time… love.

But the fairytale becomes a nightmare when Ana is accused of murdering Owen, igniting the trial of the century. Through courtroom testimony, interviews, and Ana’s memories of Owen, emerges a tale of love, lies, and cruelty—and what it truly means to be human.

  • Big Name Fan

Big Name Fan by Ruthie Knox

Big Name Fan by Ruthie Knox and Annie Mare is $3.99! This also had a mention in Dahlia’s monthly queer roundup posts. The main characters used to play detectives on a TV show and come back together to do a reunion special.

Bexley Simon and Sam Farmer aren’t detectives, but they play them on TV. Well, played, past tense. The iconic cult hit that was Craven’s Daughter ended five years ago, and their friendship died along with it. Fans were disappointed that the pair’s legendary chemistry went unfulfilled—and other fans were crushed that the actual spark between actresses Bex and Sam didn’t pay off, either. The network never intended for two women to get romantic, in life or onscreen, despite the fans. But the bigger tragedy was the loss of their dear friend, makeup artist Jen Arnot, whose accidental death cast a pall over the series’ last episodes.

Now the network has decided on a reunion special, and Bex and Sam are thrust together once more as hosts of a rewatch podcast that will feature favorite episodes. Their first guest—a megawatt star who played a murder victim early on—drops a bombshell. Among the millions of pixels of fanfic written about the show online, one truly prolific author, known in the fiction world as the show’s Big Name Fan, was an insider, almost certainly someone from the cast or crew.

As the podcast moves along—and the spark between Bex and Sam threatens to burn down the studio—the pair realize they’re faced with two actual Who is their Big Name Fan? And was Jen’s death an accident, or did someone want her dead? Sifting through clues as they question cast and crew, the duo will need to separate fact from fiction as they make their personal partnership into an unmistakable canon . . .

  • The Rake’s Midnight Kiss

The Rake’s Midnight Kiss by Anna Campbell

The Rake’s Midnight Kiss by Anna Campbell is $1.99! This is book two in the Sons of Sin series. It was originally published in 2013, but looks like it had a re-release last year.

    It Takes A Lady

Brilliant scholar Genevieve Barrett knows how to keep a secret. Her identity as the author of her father’s academic articles has always been her greatest deception—until a charming housebreaker tries to steal the mysterious Harmsworth Jewel from her. She doesn’t reveal that she recognizes her father’s devastatingly handsome new student as the thief himself. For Genevieve, this will be the most seductive secret of all…

    To Catch A Thief

Sir Richard Harmsworth has been living a lie, maintaining a rakish façade to show society that he doesn’t care about his status as a bastard. Yet long haunted by his unknown father’s identity, Richard believes the Harmsworth Jewel will confirm his claim as the rightful heir. But when Richard sets out to seduce the bookworm who possesses the stone, he instead falls for its beautiful owner. But even as she steals Richard’s heart, Genevieve will be in greater danger than her coveted treasure…

  1. squee me says:

I enjoy all of Annabeth Albert’s books, but the Hotshot series might be my favorite. Highly recommend Burn Zone. I think there’s a smidge more hurdles to HEA in this series than some of her other books. And the wildfire firefighting really interesting and compelling.

  2. FConcolor says:

The Kingdom and Big Name Fan both sound interesting.

  3. LadyVox says:

Years ago Annabeth Albert was an autobuy for me, but the Hotshot series was where she started to lose me and I don’t buy her books anymore. I found her characters were becoming too perfect, or “perfectly flawed” if that makes sense, and there wasn’t a whole lot of romantic tension. For anybody looking for feel-good romances, these books might hit the spot.

I do remember Burn Zone being the best of the Hotshot series. And a couple of Albert’s early books are comfort reads for me. So YMMV on this one!
