I’ll Have What He’s Having

I’ll Have What He’s Having by Adib Khorram is $4.99! Dahlia mentioned this one in her Queer Romance Roundup. Carrie also gave it a B-:
This was a lovely read that didn’t ask too much of my emotions. It was comforting but forgettable. I could read a chapter, wander off, and not think of it again for a month…but when I did get around to picking it up, I instantly remembered how warm and fuzzy it was.
A smart, tender, vivacious romantic comedy about mistaken identities, the line between love and sex, and the way one night—and one person—can change your life forever.
When it comes to love, Farzan Alavi is a disaster. After his most recent heartbreak, he’s drowning his sorrows at Kansas City’s newest wine bar. Only instead of being crowded between strangers, he’s escorted to a VIP table for one. There, the hot sommelier does more than treat him to the meal of his life. The way he flirts with Farzan ignites instant sparks.
There’s just one problem: David Curtis thinks Farzan is Frank Allen, Kansas City’s most influential food critic. The truth only comes out after the two spend an unforgettably hot night together. Good news—both think the mix-up is hilarious. Bad news—David is studying to become a master sommelier and has no interest in a relationship.
Neither expects their paths to cross again . . . until Farzan inherits his family’s bistro and needs David’s restaurant knowledge. The two agree to an exchange: David will answer Farzan’s questions, and Farzan will help David study for his test. Only business turns to pleasure when neither can ignore the attraction still sizzling between them. But with David set on moving after his test, and Farzan committed to his family’s restaurant, how can their relationship last past the expiration date?

The Duke Heist by Erica Ridley is $1.99! This is book one in a new series and was mentioned on a previous Hide Your Wallet. Elyse was super excited about the heist element and I feel like the other books in the series have been talked about positively here. However, some felt the it was bit anachronistic for the time period.
A NYT bestselling author kicks off a new Regency series of “irresistible romance and a family of delightful scoundrels” as a woman looking to recover a stolen painting accidentally kidnaps a duke instead. (Eloisa James)
Chloe Wynchester is completely forgettable—a curse that gives her the ability to blend into any crowd. When the only father she’s ever known makes a dying wish for his adopted family of orphans to recover a missing painting, she’s the first one her siblings turn to for stealing it back. No one expects that in doing so, she’ll also abduct a handsome duke.
Lawrence Gosling, the Duke of Faircliffe, is tortured by his father’s mistakes. To repair his estate’s ruined reputation, he must wed a highborn heiress. Yet when he finds himself in a carriage being driven hell-for-leather down the cobblestone streets of London by a beautiful woman who refuses to heed his commands, he fears his heart is hers. But how can he sacrifice his family’s legacy to follow true love?

Conventionally Yours by Annabeth Albert is $1.99! This is a gay and geeky romance set at a convention (I miss those!). It was also a summer release that Elyse picked for Hide Your Wallet. Have you read this one?
When two “big name fans” go head-to-head at a convention, love isn’t the only thing at stake.
Charming, charismatic, and effortlessly popular, Conrad Stewart seems to have it all…but in reality, he’s scrambling to keep his life from tumbling out of control.
Brilliant, guarded, and endlessly driven, Alden Roth may as well be the poster boy for perfection…but even he can’t help but feel a little broken inside.
When these mortal enemies are stuck together on a cross-country road trip to the biggest fan convention of their lives, their infamous rivalry takes a backseat as an unexpected connection is forged. Yet each has a reason why they have to win the upcoming Odyssey gaming tournament and neither is willing to let emotion get in the way—even if it means giving up their one chance at something truly magical.

This Scot of Mine by Sophie Jordan is $1.99! This is part of the Rogue Files historical romance series. The description mentions a marriage of convenience, but also sounds hella angsty. Readers enjoyed the chemistry between the main characters, though felt the plot was paper thin.
A daring deception…
Desperate to escape her vile fiancé, Lady Clara devises a bold lie—that she’s pregnant with another man’s child. With her reputation in tatters, Clara flees to Scotland to live out her days in disgrace, resigned to her fate as a spinster…until she claps eyes on the powerful and wickedly handsome Laird Hunt MacLarin.
She’s the answer to his curse…
Laird of an ancient clan, Hunt needs an heir, but he comes from a long line of men cursed to die before the birth of their firstborn. When the Duke of Autenberry approaches him with a proposition—marry my ruined sister—it seems the perfect solution. Even better, the defiant lass stirs him to his very soul.
No escaping the truth…
Except marriage cannot set them free. No matter how much Hunt desires her. No matter how much Clara burns for him. Soon she is falling for her husband, but is love enough to end the curse? Or is the tragic history of the MacLarin Clan doomed to repeat itself?

I read the Annabeth Albert book around when it came out and gave it 3 stars. I don’t remember anything about it but here’s my GR review:
“I don’t know how to rate this. I loved, loved the first 3/4 of it but I felt let down by the ending and I’m not sure I can explain why. Except that it felt cheap instead of heartwarming to me.
It’s typical, tropey Annabeth Albert – NA mm rivals to lovers, road-trip romance with only one bed. The fairytale, everything works out for the very best ending is also pretty typical of this author but it didn’t work for me this time. I thought the hfn ending for the couple was really satisfying. But the way the competition was resolved annoyed me.”
I found Conventionally Yours intensely frustrating at times (use your words, people!). I also hated the competition resolution, almost to disbelief. I did very much like the unfolding of the relationship during the road trip.
I put off reading Conventionally Yours for a while because the competition premise is so off-putting to me, but at some point I was in the mood for as @cleo says, typical tropey Annabeth Albert and it delivered. Because my expectations were so low it was much better than I anticipated.
My experience reading I’ll Have What He’s Having was the opposite. It’s also a m/m romance that was perfectly …fine. Probably better, honestly. But since Adib Khorram wrote one of the few YAs I really enjoyed, I overhyped this in my head, and think of it as disappointing.
I have a hard time convincing myself (much less anyone else) that one should read a book one expects to dislike, but it helps when I can pull it off.
As someone who loves a heist movie or story, THE DUKE HEIST just isn’t very heist-y. It is also rather anachronistic (and I am generally unbothered by such.)
