The Katie Ruggle isn’t really a new series, it’s a rebrand? i guess of the old unfinished bounty hunter series. Which is good–I’d been waaiting for them–and weird–that is NOT a cover for a bounty hunter novel, I seriously worried she’d switched to a cozier romance type, but no, same book mood, just a new look. It’s also a little confusing–the first book of the new series is not the next book teased from the original series, I think that’s book 2. (I had a deja vu moment reading the blurb on Netgalley and had to dig through the internet to figure out why.)
The original cover for the Viscount’s Unconventional Lady is quite nice. That cartoon cover is an abomination. Illustrated covers don’t have to be so horrible. If you are going to change it, make it better, not looking like it was slapped together in two minutes.
That cover for Viscount’s Unconventional Lady deserves a spot on Cover Snark. It’s so flat and awkward and awful all around.
For Apples Dipped In Gold, the book has an author’s note that talks about influences which says it is an amalgamation of several tales from Grimm, Anderson, and Lang. The Hand with the Knife by the Brothers Grimm is one of the sources.
It would be interesting to dedicate a Cover Snark to ‘horrible illustrated covers.’
Yeah that Katie Ruggle book is confusing, because there are 5 sisters with a very easily caught up on overarching story. The first 2 sisters are a 2 book series called Rocky Mountain Bounty Hunters, and then the last 3 sisters are this series, Beneath the Wild Sky. The first series has the standard Katie Ruggle ‘man with a gun’ cover and then this series has those not-even-remotely-indicative-of-tone sherbet covers.
I really liked this book, but it does have a large cast of supporting characters from Ruggle’s Search & Rescue series. Not necessary to have read that series, though.

I totally agree with the squee for Alexis Hall, Something Extraordinary. The audiobook is an absolute delight.

I really enjoyed the Alexis Hall, but it’s definitely not for everyone.
Here’s my 4 Star GR review.
The queer platonic historical romance I didn’t know the world needed until I read it. An aro, pan woman and gay man find / create a home with each other. Maybe not quite as enjoyable as book 1, but much more fun than book 2. Lots of laugh out loud moments, even though the last quarter dragged. Lots of sex (m/m, f/f and m/f – and off page m/m/m) but not between the two MCs. There’s some mild kink, including a Daddy scene that was hot but kind of came out of nowhere.
Like book 1, this is a satirical romance novel about a main character who reads a lot of romance. Belle’s character arc was my favorite part of book 2 – where she realized that she was in love with the idea of romantic love but didn’t actually experience it. In this book, she has to figure out what kind of life she wants and how to live it as an actual person, rather than as the heroine she thought she was going to be based on all of her romance reading.
I wasn’t expecting Sir Horley / Rufus’s background to be so dark. I’m still not sure it worked when the rest of the book was so fluffy.
