  • Remember Me

    Remember Me by Mary Balogh

Remember Me by May Balogh is $1.99! This is book two in the Ravenswood series and it came out summer 2023. I don’t remember hearing much about this one, but I know Balogh is an auto-buy author.

Can Lady Philippa Ware forgive the man who once shattered all her youthful dreams? Discover the passionate and heartwarming new novel on the redemptive power of love from New York Times bestselling author Mary Balogh.

Philippa, elder daughter of the Earl of Stratton, grew up eagerly anticipating a glittering debut and a brilliant marriage. Then her brother caught their father out in a clandestine affair and denounced him publicly. The whole family was disgraced, and Philippa’s hopes grew dim, then were fully shattered when she overheard the dashing, handsome Marquess of Roath viciously insult her upon learning of her father’s identity. Only years later does Philippa find the courage to go to London at last to meet the ton. She is an instant success and enjoys a close friendship with the granddaughter of a duke. Only one man can spoil everything for her, but surely he will not be in London this year.

The Duke of Wilby is nearing death and has tasked his grandson and heir, Lucas Arden, Marquess of Roath, with marrying and producing a son before it is too late. Lucas, who usually shuns London, goes there early in the Season in the hope of finding an eligible bride before his grandparents come and find one for him. He is instantly attracted to his sister’s new friend, until that young lady asks a simple question: “Remember me?” And suddenly he does remember her, as well as the reason why the daughter of the Earl of Stratton is the one woman he can never marry–even if his heart tells him she is the only woman he wants.

Unfortunately for Philippa and Lucas, the autocratic duke and his duchess have other ideas and believe them to be perfect for each other. They will simply not take no for an answer. Telling Philippa the full truth is the hardest thing Lucas has ever faced, and the discovery of it will change them both before they discover the healing power of love.

  • The Reluctant Countess

The Reluctant Countess by Eloisa James

The Reluctant Countess by Eloisa James is $1.99! This is book two in the Would-Be Wallflowers series. I feel like James’s releases the last few years have flown under the radar. Have you been keeping up?

New York Times bestselling author Eloisa James returns to the Would-Be Wallflowers series with an enemies-to-lovers romance between a proper earl and an entirely improper lady—whom he can’t stop thinking about.

Giles Renwick, Earl of Lilford, has never made a fool of himself over a woman—until he meets Lady Yasmin Régnier. Yasmin is ineligible for his attentions in every way: not as a wife, certainly not as a mistress (she is a lady!), nor even as a friend, since they vehemently dislike each other. Her gowns are too low, and her skirts are dampened to cling to admittedly lovely thighs. She loves to gossip—and giggle.

She isn’t dignified, or polite, or even truly British, given that her father’s French ancestry clearly predominated. Not to mention the fact that her mother had been one of Napoleon’s mistresses, a fact she makes no effort to hide.

    So what—in heaven’s name—possesses him to propose?

And what will he do if she says yes?

  • From Bad to Cursed

From Bad to Cursed by Lana Harper

From Bad to Cursed by Lana Harper is $1.99! It’s book two in The Witches of Thistle Grove series, and many of us are big fans of the series. Fingers crossed this sale lasts!

Opposites attract in this wickedly charming rom-com by Lana Harper, author of Payback’s a Witch.

Wild child Isidora Avramov is a thrill chaser, adept demon summoner, and—despite the whole sexy-evil-sorceress vibe—also a cuddly animal lover. When she’s not designing costumes and new storylines for the Arcane Emporium’s haunted house, Issa’s nursing a secret, conflicted dream of ditching her family’s witchy business to become an indie fashion designer in her own right.

But when someone starts sabotaging the celebrations leading up to this year’s Beltane festival with dark, dangerous magic, a member of the rival Thorn family gets badly hurt—throwing immediate suspicion on the Avramovs. To clear the Avramov name and step up for her family when they need her the most, Issa agrees to serve as a co-investigator, helping none other than Rowan Thorn get to the bottom of things.

Rowan is the very definition of lawful good, so tragically noble and by-the-book he makes Issa’s teeth hurt. In accordance with their families’ complicated history, he and Issa have been archenemies for years and have grown to heartily loathe each other. But as the unlikely duo follow a perplexing trail of clues to a stunning conclusion, Issa and Rowan discover how little they really know each other… and stumble upon a maddening attraction that becomes harder to ignore by the day.

  • Dragon Bound

    Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison

Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison is $1.99! It’s the first book in her Elder Races series. I listened to this one on audio and enjoyed it. It’s a bit more on the steamy/erotic side and it definitely reminded me of early 2000s paranormal romance.

Half-human and half-Wyr, Pia Giovanni spent her life keeping a low profile among the Wyrkind and avoiding the continuing conflict between them and their Dark Fae enemies. But after being blackmailed into stealing a coin from the hoard of a dragon, Pia finds herself targeted by one of the most powerful—and passionate—of the Elder Races.

As the most feared and respected of the Wyrkind, Dragos Cuelebre cannot believe someone had the audacity to steal from him, much less succeed. And when he catches the thief, Dragos spares her life, claiming her as his own to further explore the desire they’ve ignited in each other.

Pia knows she must repay Dragos for her trespass, but refuses to become his slave—although she cannot deny wanting him, body and soul.

Dragon Bound is one of my all time favorites. It was my gateway to PNR. I enjoy the broad spectrum of shifters with distinct personalities and abilities. The interplay of suspense, humor, steamy attraction and twisty plot—For my money Thea Harrison is unbeatable. There are wonderful surprises in Dragon Bound, so don’t search around too much before you read it.

THE RELUCTANT COUNTESS by Eloisa James: fun story! I appreciated the fact that the Earl came to his sense relatively quickly, so I didn’t have to wade to long through the “I think you’re hot, but inappropriate” trope.

DRAGON BOUND by Thea Harrison was another winner, but I had mixed success with the rest of the books in the series.

I have not read REMEMBER ME by Mary Balogh, but I want to be wherever the FMC is on that cover. Oh my gosh. It looks bright and sunny and green and wonderful. Can I go on vacation to wherever this is? Preferably right now? I’m tired of winter, leafless trees, and brown.

I’m another who really enjoyed Dragon Bound (and have read it many times).

  5. kkw says:

I liked Dragon Bound when I read it but I also couldn’t keep up with the series. It hit such a good balance of taking itself seriously but not too seriously. Definitely my pick of these 4.
I read The Reluctant Countess, and idk if Eloisa James is phoning it in or I have just read too many of her books. She used to be one of my favorites but the magic is gone for me. I expect it’s a me problem, as I binged her books too hard.
Although I have a similar issue with Mary Balogh – enjoyed, gorged, diminished returns – but I do think she spends too much time with previous pairings and so her always gentle pacing grows glacial. If I had some self control with pacing my own reading I probably would feel differently.
I gave up on small town witchy contemporaries because of the weird racist underpinnings (SBTB had a link to an article that laid out everything that bugged me super coherently but of course I remember nothing that would help me find it again). But even if I hadn’t, the we are enemies because of our families is one of the hardest tropes to pull off. Your family has enemy families? Your family is bad news.

  6. Jiobal says:

I also remember Dragon Bound fondly. And then I stumbled across a review by Alexis Hall (on Goodreads, IIRC), who was then new to the Romance Genre. Very funny and highly recommended!

@kkw is this the article you are thinking of? How to Uphold the Status Quo: The Problem With Small Town Witch Romances https://reactormag.com/the-problem-with-small-town-witch-romances/

  8. kkw says:

@catalogermom Yes! That’s the one! Thank you.
I am always struggling to try to enjoy more things, because my brain’s default position is: no. Much of the time I can learn to like things, especially if I can get out of my own way. It’s often just a matter of education and exposure and not giving into hyperactive defensive negativity. However, one of the troubles with trying to gaslight my way to happiness is that sometimes I can’t enjoy nice things because they’re not for me, and also sometimes *they are not actually nice.* I found that article so reassuring. It was not just a me being joyless problem, it was not me imagining problems. That subgenre is just not working out the way it might.

    Really liked the James!
