  • The Rook

    The Rook by Daniel O'Malley

RECOMMENDED: The Rook by Daniel O’Malley $2.99! Carrie loves the series, especially the sequel Stiletto. It’s urban fantasy set in London with a badass cast of characters. But some found the book to have a lot of info-dumping. Have you read The Rook?

“The body you are wearing used to be mine.” So begins the letter Myfanwy Thomas is holding when she awakes in a London park surrounded by bodies all wearing latex gloves. With no recollection of who she is, Myfanwy must follow the instructions her former self left behind to discover her identity and track down the agents who want to destroy her.

She soon learns that she is a Rook, a high-ranking member of a secret organization called the Chequy that battles the many supernatural forces at work in Britain. She also discovers that she possesses a rare, potentially deadly supernatural ability of her own.

In her quest to uncover which member of the Chequy betrayed her and why, Myfanwy encounters a person with four bodies, an aristocratic woman who can enter her dreams, a secret training facility where children are transformed into deadly fighters, and a conspiracy more vast than she ever could have imagined.

Filled with characters both fascinating and fantastical, THE ROOK is a richly inventive, suspenseful, and often wry thriller that marks an ambitious debut from a promising young writer.

  • A Botanist’s Guide to Parties and Poisons

A Botanist’s Guide to Parties and Poisons by Kate Khavari

A Botanist’s Guide to Parties and Poisons by Kate Khavari is $1.99! I mentioned this in Get Rec’d for all of you historical mystery lovers out there. It’s set in 1920s London with a research assistant heroine! Book two is also on sale.

Saffron Everleigh is in a race against time to free her wrongly accused professor before he goes behind bars forever. Perfect for fans of Deanna Raybourn and Anna Lee Huber, Kate Khavari’s debut historical mystery is a fast-paced, fearless adventure.

London, 1923. Newly minted research assistant Saffron Everleigh attends a dinner party for the University College of London. While she expects to engage in conversations about the university’s large expedition to the Amazon, she doesn’t expect Mrs. Henry, one of the professors’ wives to drop to the floor, poisoned by an unknown toxin.

Dr. Maxwell, Saffron’s mentor, is the main suspect, having had an explosive argument with Dr. Henry a few days prior. As evidence mounts against Dr. Maxwell and the expedition’s departure draws nearer, Saffron realizes if she wants her mentor’s name cleared, she’ll have to do it herself.

Joined by enigmatic Alexander Ashton, a fellow researcher, Saffron uses her knowledge of botany as she explores steamy greenhouses, dark gardens, and deadly poisons. Will she be able to uncover the truth or will her investigation land her on the murderer’s list?

  • Here for the Wrong Reasons

Here for the Wrong Reasons by Annabel Paulsen

Here for the Wrong Reasons by Annabel Paulsen and Lydia Wang is $1.99! Thank you to everyone who let us know about this sale. We mentioned on a Hide Your Wallet earlier this spring and it’s a F/F reality TV romance.

In this swoon-filled lesbian romcom, two dating show contestants vying for the affection of the leading man fall head over heels—for each other.

Fans of Ashley Herring Blake and Alexandria Bellefleur, and readers who love The Bachelor, will adore this steamy, laugh-out-loud debut romance.

Krystin knows exactly what she a husband, a horse, and a place to hang all her competitive rodeo blue ribbons. But when none of the eligible bachelors in Montana end up being right for her, she turns to reality TV. On Hopelessly Devoted, Krystin will compete against dozens of other women for the heart of this season’s Hopeless Romantic, Josh Rosen. She’s determined to win the perfect life she came here for—if she can just ignore the glossy brunette whose crimson smile gives her goosebumps.

Lauren has never done anything for the right reasons—and she’s definitely not on Hopelessly Devoted to win Josh’s heart. Lauren’s plan is simple: stay on the show long enough to build her social media following, and then gracefully leave when it’s her turn to be eliminated. With enough followers, she’ll finally have enough influencer clout to do whatever she wants—including come out of the proverbial walk-in closet. But the longer she stays on the show, the more she finds herself tangled up in a certain blonde’s lasso.

But neither contestant expects a heteronormative dating show to challenge their own deeply-ingrained ideas of who they are—and what they want. Fans of The Charm Offensive and Love Island will swoon for this sparkling debut romcom.

  • Collide

    Collide by Bal Khabra

Collide by Bal Khabra is $2.99! This is the first book in a New Adult series with hockey player heroes. I think this was originally self-pubbed and got popular on BookTok before being picked up by Berkley, but I’m not 100% confident in that.

She’s an honors student with ambitious graduate school plans and he’s a jock with only hockey on his mind, but once their worlds collide, their connection is hot enough to melt an ice rink.

An ultimatum from Summer Preston’s thesis advisor thrusts her into an unexpected collision with the hockey team’s captain, Aiden Crawford. She’s caught between conflicting desires of fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a sport psychologist and staying as far away as possible from the god-awful sport. And once she meets Aiden—well, let’s just say he confirms all her worst assumptions about hockey players.

Being the captain of the college hockey team has its perks, except when a reckless mistake by Aiden’s team threatens to jeopardize their entire season. As punishment, Aiden’s coach nominates him as the subject of a student research project. Participating is the last thing he wants to do, especially since the girl leading the project looks like she could wield his skates as a weapon.

Summer can’t stand Aiden’s blasé approach to life, and Aiden doesn’t understand why she’s twenty years old with a twenty-five-year plan. But their bickering soon turns to bantering—and once they let their guards down, there’s nothing to check their feelings.

  4. Darlynne says:

I perk up all over whenever THE ROOK is mentioned and feel the same about the other two books. BLITZ especially was really dark and still so funny. The hope for further Checquy files is eternal.

  5. Jennifer says:

The Rook is one of my top favorite books of all time.

  6. oceanjasper says:

The premise in Collide doesn’t make sense. Why would anyone want to be a sports psychologist if they don’t have any interest in sport?

  7. flchen1 says:

@oceanjasper, maybe she’s interested in sports in general but not in hockey? I haven’t read this, but I agree it wouldn’t make sense for someone interested in sports psychology to not have an interest in sports at all.

  8. Michael I says:

    @oceanjasper, @flchen1

Haven’t read the book either, but the sample suggests that “interested in sports in general but not in hockey” is the situation (or more precisely interested in sports in general but actively disliking hockey).

  9. wingednike says:

Have any of you who read The Rook watched the show? What are your thoughts on it?

  10. Gwen says:

I think info-dumping is kind of the whole point of The Rook, in a way. (I also love the book, more than the other two. Myfanwy is such a fun character.)

  11. Bonnie says:

I love, love, LOVE The Rook … yes yes not perfect, but still utterly delightful, with so many laugh-out-loud moments, and only better upon each re-read. Liked it so much, I bought it in hardcover for my personal library.

  12. Darlynne says:

@wingednike: Hated the show. The author was gracious enough to say those who hadn’t read the book really enjoyed the show; others were able to recognize that the book and show were two completely different things. I’m looking for a stronger word than “hated,” but that will do for now. Obviously YMMV.

@Gwen: Definitely the good kind of info-dumping, also true in BLITZ. Without all the background, nothing would make sense IMO.

  13. The Rook is one of my all time favorites. I love all three books in the series, but I utterly adore Myfanwy. “Do you even know how the duck works?”
