  • Sweethand

    Sweethand by N.G. Peltier

Sweethand by N.G. Peltier is $2.99! This is book one in the Island Bites series. It was also recommended in the comments by Cleo for The Rec League: Chaotic, Wholesome Energy.

After a public meltdown over her breakup from her cheating musician boyfriend, Cherisse swore off guys in the music industry, and dating in general for a while, preferring to focus on growing her pastry chef business.

When Cherisse’s younger sister reveals she’s getting married in a few months, Cherisse hopes that will distract her mother enough to quit harassing her about finding a guy, settling down and having kids. But her mother’s matchmaking keeps intensifying.

Cherisse tries to humour her mother, hoping if she feigns interest in the eligible bachelors she keeps tossing her way, she’ll be off the hook, but things don’t quite go as planned. Turns out for the first time in ages, she and Keiran King, the most annoying man ever, are on the island at the same time. Avoiding him is impossible, especially when Keiran’s close friend is the one marrying her sister, and he’s the best man to her maid of honour.

Keiran doesn’t know what to make of Cherisse now. They’ve always butted heads. To him she’s always been a stuck-up brat who seeks attention, even while he secretly harbored a crush on her. Now with Cherisse’s sister marrying one of his good friends he can’t escape her as the wedding activities keep throwing them together.

When things turn heated after a rainy night of bedroom fun, they both have to figure out if they can survive the countdown to wedding day, without this turning into a recipe for disaster.

  • The Chai Factor

The Chai Factor by Farah Heron

RECOMMENDED: The Chai Factor by Farah Heron is $1.99! Aarya really loved this one and gave it an A-:

The Chai Factor is very much a swoonworthy rom-com: it’s funny and sobering, it has witty dialogue and disquieting situations, and it’s sigh-worthy and rage-inducing. I laughed, I cried, and I cheered for Amira and Duncan. The Chai Factor is an essential book for your list of summer reads.

Amira Khan has no plans to break her no-dating rule.

Thirty-year-old engineer Amira Khan has set one rule for herself: no dating until her grad-school thesis is done. Nothing can distract her from completing a paper that is so good her boss will give her the promotion she deserves when she returns to work in the city. Amira leaves campus early, planning to work in the quiet basement apartment of her family’s house. But she arrives home to find that her grandmother has rented the basement to . . . a barbershop quartet. Seriously? The living situation is awkward: Amira needs silence; the quartet needs to rehearse for a competition; and Duncan, the small-town baritone with the flannel shirts, is driving her up the wall.

As Amira and Duncan clash, she is surprised to feel a simmering attraction for him. How can she be interested in someone who doesn’t get her, or her family’s culture? This is not a complication she needs when her future is at stake. But when intolerance rears its ugly head and people who are close to Amira get hurt, she learns that there is more to Duncan than meets the eye. Now she must decide what she is willing to fight for. In the end, it may be that this small-town singer is the only person who sees her at all.

  • Can’t Let Her Go

Can’t Let Her Go by Kianna Alexander

Can’t Let Her Go by Kianna Alexander is $1.99 at Amazon! Shana mentioned this one on a previous Whatcha Reading. I love all the warm orange tones of the cover.

Friends to lovers? There’s a lot to consider, a lot to hope for, and a lot at risk in a steamy and emotional romance by the bestselling author of Can’t Resist Her.

Peaches Monroe and Jamie Hunt are core members of their Texas friend squad and have so much in common. They’re successful at their careers in personal care. They take Austin’s “Keep It Weird” vibe to heart, each leaning into their own unique talents and sense of style. And they’re both ready to go on to even bigger things. Is pushing past the boundaries of friendship into something deeper one of them? The red-hot fantasy is there…but so is real life.

Jamie’s college dreams will take her far from her hometown. She’s already road-tripping to possibilities from San Antonio to Houston. And Peaches has obligations of her own. Not only is she planning to expand her business, but she’s taking care of her family after her mother’s passing, leaving her overwhelmed and under pressure.

No matter how perfect Jamie and Peaches are for each other, is this the right time for romance? Finding their true selves comes first. Only then can they hope to pursue a future of lasting love—together.

  • Ten Tomatoes That Changed the World

Ten Tomatoes That Changed the World by William Alexander

Ten Tomatoes That Changed the World by William Alexander is $3.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and I mentioned this on a previous Get Rec’d. If you love food history, check this one out!

New York Times bestselling author William Alexander takes readers on the surprisingly twisty journey of the beloved tomato in this fascinating and erudite microhistory.

The tomato gets no respect. Never has. Lost in the dustbin of history for centuries, accused of being vile and poisonous, subjected to being picked hard-green and gassed, even used as a projectile, the poor tomato has become the avatar for our disaffection with industrial foods — while becoming the most popular vegetable in America (and, in fact, the world). Each summer, tomato festivals crop up across the country; the Heinz ketchup bottle, instantly recognizable, has earned a spot in the Smithsonian; and now the tomato is redefining the very nature of farming, moving from fields into climate-controlled mega-greenhouses the size of New England villages.

Supported by meticulous research and told in a lively, accessible voice, Ten Tomatoes That Changed the World seamlessly weaves travel, history, humor, and a little adventure (and misadventure) to follow the tomato’s trail through history. A fascinating story complete with heroes, con artists, conquistadors, and—no surprise—the Mafia, this book is a mouth-watering, informative, and entertaining guide to the food that has captured our hearts for generations.

I enjoyed Sweethand, with some caveats. Here’s my longer review from GR:

3.5 stars / B- (and an A for the cover!)
Opposites attract / forced proximity m/f bi romance set in Trinidad. This was a lot of fun. I loved the bi male rep.

I was annoyed by the big miscommunication (seriously – don’t just think about talking to each other, actually do it) and the impulse control issues. Both MCs kept saying and doing impulsive things that they regretted later and it made them seem younger than late 20s.

The middle part of the novel was my favorite – it was fun to watch them reluctantly get to know each other and be surprised by what they discovered.

Had no idea where the “tomatoes” in the headline was going to take me. Super glad I clicked to find out!

The Chai Factor is soooo good (there’s a Princess Bride reference!) and will make you crave Indian food like nobody’s business.

  6. Vicki says:

The tomato book looked like a good choice for an audio book.

And, just to throw this out there, am I the only one who thinks that sometimes we need a whole lot more grovel from the FMC?

  7. HeatherS says:

I didn’t like “The Chai Factor”, but I went into it expecting a practicing Muslim FMC from list roundups I’d seen. What I got was book with a “cultural (not religious) Muslim” FMC. I tried another of the author’s books, but DNFed it a couple of chapters in because I don’t want to read about “Muslim” characters who don’t act like Muslims.
