Hanukkah 2023 Night 5: A Crafting Collection!

A blue spangled background with a lit menorah and some blue ights on a table, with a framed picture of the Ladies ver 2.0, and in peach letters it says Hanukkah 2023 at the topIt’s the fifth night of Hanukkah, and this giveaway was created by Elyse, who knows all types of crafty ways to make sure people are warm and cozy.

Before I turn this over to Elyse, my Hanukkah wishes for you tonight include the softest yarns, the most delicious snacks, and the very coziest socks.

Take it away, Elyse!

Elyse: The holidays are upon us!

That means, for me anyway, a couple of looooong dreary winter months ahead. What a great time to try a new a craft or hobby!

For this night of the giveaway I’ve gathered everything you need to try out crochet.

Woobles crochet has been incredibly popular this year among my friends. This Pierre the Penguin kit contains everything you need to make this super cute penguin. It’s a beginner pattern so if you’ve never touched a crochet hook before in your life, this pattern will work for you. Also there are step-by-step video tutorials to help you.

To store your project while you work I’m including this quilted project bag from This Handmade Life.

This winter pattern is adorable and this bag can double as a toiletry or cosmetic bag.

A rectangular quilted bag with a dark blue background and a winter floral design.

Finally, I’m including a penguin stitch marker from The Littlest Charm Company.

You’ll need a stitch marker to make Pierre, and while one is included, this one is way cuter.

There also might be some books lurking in the package I send, just in case you need a break from crocheting.

Sarah: My gosh that’s absurdly adorable. Thank you, Elyse!!

To enter, please comment and tell us what craft or hobby you picked up or practiced this year?

Standard disclaimers apply: We are not being compensated for this giveaway. Void where prohibited. Open to international residents where permitted by applicable law. Must be over 18 and ready to wind a piece of string around, and around, into a penguin. May cause substantial feelings of glee because it’s so stinkin’ cute.

Comments will close 12 December 2023 at or near 11:59pm ET, and winner will be announced shortly afterward.

Good luck, Happy Hanukkah, and thank you for being part of Smart Bitches!

WINNER UPDATE: Congratulations to Jane!

  1. Amanda W says:

I learned how to knit this year and love it.

  2. Kerry says:

I’m trying to get back to cross stitch and patchwork after a distraction into crochet. Right now I have two cross stitch projects and a patchwork wall hanging to finish by the 25th. Hopefully I’ll get them done.k

  3. Lostshadows says:

Started getting back into crochet. I’m still pretty rusty though.

  4. Francesca says:

I did get pretty seriously back into baking – too much Bake Off, I guess. I have a partially finished cross stitch tote bag staring reproachfully at me. I made a massive mistake and the thought of undoing all that work (it’s a repeating pattern that I messed up) is just too overwhelming. I’m trying to tell myself that it’s okay if it is not perfect.

  5. Jen says:

Sashiko embroidery for mending! I’ve psyched several pairs of well – loved jeans with holes in the knees because it it too hard to find jeans that fit *just right*

  6. Avital Ordan says:

I crochet, mostly amigarumi octupuses for preemies.

  7. Lisa J says:

I haven’t picked up anything new, unless you want to count cleaning (yuck.) But, I did pick up the crochet hook and knitting needles again this year.

  8. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I used to do a lot of beading—but for many years I worked with special needs students and I learned fairly early not to wear necklaces or dangling earrings in classrooms where students were prone to physical behaviors. Now that I’ve moved into an office job, I’m back to wearing jewelry regularly, and I’m ready to start making some new things.

  9. SandraL says:

I knit all year along, but am ready to try crochet!?

  10. Lianne says:

I started in crochet, then moved to knitting in the last decade. Now I’m giving Tunisian crochet a try.

  11. Avengela says:

I took up weaving and started a scarf this year. However, I chose the wrong yarn and must start over.

  12. WhimsicalCow says:

My girl scout troop decided to go form their crafting badge this fall, so together we all tried our hands at crocheting, knitting, jewelry making, and mosaic art! I picked up some nifty new skills, and it was a lot of fun seeing which of my girls took to which crafts.

  13. LisaM says:

I don’t know if this counts, but I decided to try coloring again, for the days when my hands couldn’t handle needles or hooks.

  14. SandyH says:

I am getting back to crewel embroidery. I haven’t done a project for many years.

  15. Erin says:

I love to knit! I wonder if my brain would work for crochet…

  16. Carrie A says:

Does writing poetry count? I’ve written a lot of poetry this year.

  17. CC says:

I’ve started decorating my journals, adding collage elements. It makes it very pretty to flip through.

  18. LittyG says:

I picked up a scarf I’d been knitting a couple years ago and hope to actually finish it next year!

  19. Katy L says:

I do a lot of cross stitch, but also some quilting and crocheting.

Thanks to all the Smart Bitches for all the fun and giveaways.

Happy Hannukah, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwaanza, or happy whatever other holiday you may practice to the entire Bitchery!

  20. I went back to knitting this year, and I’m loving it. What a fun prize for today!

  21. Steph says:

I haven’t gotten into any new craft, although I’m continuing to try to make bake off worthy desserts (that taste great but often look more like what you would see on Nailed It).

  22. Peggy says:

I took up knitting again and (woot!) I’ve conquered my too-tight-stitches problem! Even managed to knit a sweater for my granddaughter!!

  23. Malin says:

I’ve been knitting a lot. I also enjoy baking and adult colouring books.

  24. Abigail says:

I bought one of those almost dollhouse room kits where you get all the pieces and then build like a mini bookstore, or garden, or whatever. I’ve been wanting to try it for ages!

  25. FashionablyEvil says:

Cooking! Had to navigate some dietary restrictions for a time so had to get creative.

  26. lisa says:

I got back into sewing this year!

  27. Hope-and-memory says:

Long-time knitter (sometimes crochet) here– have been on hiatus for a while but hoping to get back into it and finish some UFOs!

  28. Alana says:

I’ve been working on getting back into journaling and cross stitch. I really enjoy both, but there’s a nee puppy in the house that makes things just a tiny bit chaotic…

  29. genie says:

I’m trying to get my knitting mojo back, after disastrous results for 3 projects in a row. It’s a slow process. But the most fun thing I learned was how to decorate cookies with royal icing! I can’t draw a straight line to save my life, so they looked a bit abstract, but that just shows I made them myself, right?

  30. Connie says:

Starting to get back into cross stitch after a long break and really enjoying it.

  31. Naty says:

I’ve been slowly getting back into knitting this year after a bit of a hiatus and I’m looking to try my hand at crochet.

  32. Annie says:

I’ve started to get back into crochet again this year. In other hobbies, I’ve started playing Disney Lorcana at my local game stores and have gotten really into that!

  33. Melanie says:

I am a knitter, and I’ve been making lots of hats lately. I have taken one learn-to-crochet class and produced one dishcloth. Pierre is adorable and I’d love to improve my crochet skills.

  34. susan says:

I learned Swedish weaving/huck embroidery (if you are not familiar with this and are curious https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/swedish-huck-embroidery-4114621) for when I am between knitting projects.

  35. Janine says:

I really leaned into puzzles this year. Not jigsaws, but narrative puzzles (think Escape Room in a Box) type puzzles. Unfortunately I got a little carried away, to the detriment of my available storage space!

  36. QueenVictoriaa says:

Knitting is my only craft, and I love it! I’ve tried to crochet a couple times and just can’t seem to get the hang. Still, I’d love to learn!

  37. Mandy says:

This year, I got back into crochet! I hadn’t done it in years, but I wanted to make some cool gifts for my BFF. I was always scared of making granny squares. I thought I wasn’t smart enough to do the pattern, but guess what – they’re easy once you get the hang of it! I also learned a cool bobble pattern. It was a perfect hobby while I recovered from back surgery.

I’ve been eyeing these little Woobles kits for a while!

  38. Polly says:

It’s been a weird year. I moved 1/2 way across the country, so for a good little bit I made decluttering and giving stuff away a hobby. Then I arrived in a new, cold place and have started trying my hand at knitting (again after 20 some odd years.)

  39. Meganph says:

I started learning more about Irish Whiskey, but I may be developing a little too much of a passion for it… so maybe adding crochet to the mix is a good idea?

  40. Jen C says:

I am a knitter but would like to learn rudimentary crochet. Unfortunately my knitting mojo has disappeared, but I’m hoping that it reappears for the holidays.
