The Footman
The Footman by S.M. LaViolette is 99c at Amazon! LaViolette is the other pen name of author Minerva Spencer. I’ve heard good things about this one and have seen it pop into the SBTB comments from time to time.
Lady Elinor wants nothing to do with love. Her arranged marriage—and one glorious but ill-fated kiss with a handsome footman—cured her of any romantic notions she’d ever entertained. Now a widow, all Elinor plans to do is rebuild her life—without a man in it. She certainly has no intention of falling for the charming and entirely too tempting American who seems so determined to win her favor…
Stephen Worth is no longer the impoverished footman who lost everything because of the impulsive actions of a reckless young lady. Having reinvented himself long ago, his sole focus now is revenge. He’ll do whatever it takes to extract a pound of flesh from all who wronged him so long ago. And if that means ruining the lovely Elinor in the process? So be it.
But it’s not long before Elinor finds herself drawn to Stephen despite her best intentions—and before Stephen starts to wonder if maybe a life with Elinor is worth more than his revenge. Can Stephen and Elinor overcome their painful pasts and take a second chance on love? Or is the cost of trust simply more than they’re willing to pay?

A Holiday by Gaslight
A Holiday by Gaslight by Mimi Matthews is 99c! This is a historical romance novella set during a house party during the holidays. Sarah reviewed this one and gave it a C+. Here are some of the good things she said:
I liked the central romance, and I really liked Sophie and Ned. I liked the contrast in their conversations from before they agreed to be mutually candid and afterward. There were some moments I found incredibly charming, and some development of the story that was heartfelt and genuine.
A Dutiful Daughter
Sophie Appersett is quite willing to marry outside of her class to ensure the survival of her family. But the darkly handsome Mr. Edward Sharpe is no run of the mill London merchant. He’s grim and silent. A man of little emotion–or perhaps no emotion at all. After two months of courtship, she’s ready to put an end to things. After all, even a dutiful daughter has her limits.
A Taciturn Tradesman
Ned has come a long way since his days working as a draper’s assistant. He’s wealthy, ambitious, and eager to take a wife. But the courtship advice issued in The Gentlemen’s Book of Etiquette isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Though he’s followed it to the letter, Miss Appersett still doesn’t wish to see him again. Frustrated and hurt, he’s more than happy to oblige her.
A Christmas Courtship
Severing ties with her former beau isn’t as straightforward as Sophie envisioned. Her parents are outraged. And then there’s Charles Darwin, Prince Albert, and that dratted gaslight. What’s a girl to do except invite Mr. Sharpe to the annual Christmas party at Appersett House and give him one more chance to win her? But this time there’ll be no false formality. This time they’ll get to know each other for who they really are.

Saint Death’s Daughter
Saint Death’s Daughter by C.S.E. Cooney is 99c! This is a fantasy novel that leans toward the darker side. However, some people on Goodreads have shelved this as Young Adult, though I’m unsure about that. Comments are welcome!
Nothing complicates life like Death.
Lanie Stones, the daughter of the Royal Assassin and Chief Executioner of Liriat, has never led a normal life. Born with a gift for necromancy and a literal allergy to violence, she was raised in isolation in the family’s crumbling mansion by her oldest friend, the ancient revenant Goody Graves.
When her parents are murdered, it falls on Lanie and her cheerfully psychotic sister Nita to settle their extensive debts or lose their ancestral home—and Goody with it. Appeals to Liriat’s ruler to protect them fall on indifferent ears… until she, too, is murdered, throwing the nation’s future into doubt.
Hunted by Liriat’s enemies, hounded by her family’s creditors and terrorised by the ghost of her great-grandfather, Lanie will need more than luck to get through the next few months—but when the goddess of Death is on your side, anything is possible.

THE FOOTMAN is so so good. Unfortunately, it’s the only one of Spencer/LaViolette’s books I was able to completely get lost in (although, cw/tw for violence against the heroine in the past). Sadly, when it comes to her work, lightning did not strike twice for me.

Saint death’s daughter just won the world fantasy award for best novel!
I’m taking a chance on the Saint Death’s Daughter (hoping for not YA or at least one that is good YA) and I’m only about 40 pages in…BUT so far I am in LOVE with all the names and the character, if you will, of the MC. I wish I had more pets to name! I’ll try to report back after I finish reading.
I should also say, I imagine it starts as it means to go on, and it starts pretty graphic and violent. It is a story of an assassin & necromancer’s family, so heads up for the lite horror adjacent.
