Big Chicas Don’t Cry
Big Chicas Don’t Cry by Anette Chavez Macias is $2.49 at Amazon! This seems like it leans more toward women’s fiction with some romantic threads. It has a 4.2-star rating on Goodreads.
Four cousins navigate love, loss, and the meaning of family over the course of one memorable year in this heartfelt family drama.
Cousins Mari, Erica, Selena, and Gracie are inseparable. They aren’t just family but best friends—sharing secrets, traditions, and a fierce love for their abuelita. But their idyllic childhood ends when Mari’s parents divorce, forcing her to move away. With Mari gone, the girls’ tight-knit bond unravels.
Fifteen years later, Mari’s got the big house and handsome husband, but her life is in shambles. Erica’s boyfriend just dumped her, and her new boss hates her. Selena can’t seem to find her place in the world—not Mexican enough for her family, not white enough for her colleagues. And Gracie is a Catholic school teacher with an all-consuming crush, but she can’t trust herself when it comes to romance.
As rocky as the cousins’ lives have become, nothing can prepare them for the heartbreaking loss of a loved one. When tragedy reunites them, will they remember their abuelita’s lessons about family and forgiveness—or are fifteen years of separation too much to overcome?

Spellbound
Spellbound by Allie Therin is $1.99! This is a gay fantasy historical romance with a dash of mystery. Most readers loved the writing, while others wished the execution were better. Reviews also mention that this one has closed door/off the page sex scenes.
To save Manhattan, they’ll have to save each other first…

The Empress of Salt and Fortune
The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo is $1.99! I saw a few tweets about this one by the book’s editor and I wanted to include those quotes here because HELLO:
“Angry mothers raise daughters fierce enough to fight wolves.”
For less than a cup of coffee learn how the war was won by the fury of the nameless & silenced women.
With the heart of an Atwood tale and the visuals of a classic Asian period drama The Empress of Salt and Fortune is a tightly and lushly written narrative about empire, storytelling, and the anger of women.
A young royal from the far north is sent south for a political marriage. Alone and sometimes reviled, she has only her servants on her side. This evocative debut chronicles her rise to power through the eyes of her handmaiden, at once feminist high fantasy and a thrilling indictment of monarchy.

Hani and Ishu’s Guide to Fake Dating
Hani and Ishu’s Guide to Fake Dating by Adiba Jaigirdar is $1.99! This was previously mentioned on Hide Your Wallet. This is a YA romance with fake dating and sounds super cute!
Everyone likes Humaira “Hani” Khan—she’s easy going and one of the most popular girls at school. But when she comes out to her friends as bisexual, they invalidate her identity, saying she can’t be bi if she’s only dated guys. Panicked, Hani blurts out that she’s in a relationship…with a girl her friends absolutely hate—Ishita “Ishu” Dey. Ishu is the complete opposite of Hani. She’s an academic overachiever who hopes that becoming head girl will set her on the right track for college. But Ishita agrees to help Hani, if Hani will help her become more popular so that she stands a chance of being elected head girl.
Despite their mutually beneficial pact, they start developing real feelings for each other. But relationships are complicated, and some people will do anything to stop two Bengali girls from achieving happily ever after.

I love Allie Therin’s series.
Felony Melanie and the Prank War: The Teenage Adventures of Felony Melanie is 99 cents until Aug 13.
“You met her in the movie Sweet Home Alabama. Now see what Melanie Smooter was like before she became hot fashion designer Melanie Carmichael. Head back to the 1990s for this laugh out loud rom com based on one of the best romantic comedy movies of all time.”
By the screenwriter and his sister.
The cover of Spellbound is gorgeous!
@Heather, yes it is! Fantasy and fantasy romance seem to me to have an overabundance of gorgeous, amazing, creative covers. Meanwhile contemporary and historical romance get … cartoons. What’s up with that?
Valor’s Choice by Tanya Huff is on sale for $1.99 at Amazon. Think I saw that recommended here as having a similar feel to the Murderbot books.
@Cristie: I am a huge fan of the Valor books, all of them, multiple times. They are more military sci-fi, a platoon of individuals from many species, led by Staff Sergeant Torin Kerr. Torin’s sense of humor comes through when dealing with know-it-all lieutenants and protecting her soldiers. I have to think Tanya Huff spent time in the military because her observations are (to this civilian reader) pitch perfect.
There is a romantic interest that appears later, but Torin is too busy fighting a previously unknown galactic enemy and her military bureaucracy at the moment. It is her genuine care for and camaraderie with her soldiers that gets me every time. /squee

Two Wrongs Make a Right by Chloe Liese–I haven’t read this but seem to recall mixed reviews; some people loved it while others found issue with the female main character or the contradictory-ness of the diversity rep or the Much Ado About Nothing retelling or inconsistency of the characterizations or the third-act breakup, among other things… If you’ve read it, did you like it?
Mary Roberts Rinehart’s THE YELLOW ROOM in on sale at Amazon for $.99. I cut my mystery-loving teeth on all of these books: a mixture of murder/crime, a formerly-wealthy young woman trying to hold everything together (usually an older relative) while her love is overseas fighting in 1945. Although dated, there is much to enjoy about all Roberts Rinehart’s romantic suspense stories.
