Hide those wallets because it’s Tuesday, and that means new releases.
Admittedly, I think it’s a slow start to the month, but the next two weeks are looking overloaded with new books we want to pick up. All I’m saying is get ready and gird yourselves for the next two HYW posts.
This one has a couple rereleases of previously published books with new covers or updated content. There are also contemporary romances and mysteries!
Role Playing

Author: Cathy Yardley
Released: July 1, 2023 by Montlake
Genre: Contemporary Romance, RomanceFrom Cathy Yardley, author of Love, Comment, Subscribe, comes an emotional rom-com about two middle-aged gamers who grow their online connection into an IRL love story.
Maggie is an unapologetically grumpy forty-eight-year-old hermit. But when her college-aged son makes her a deal―he’ll be more social if she does the same―she can’t refuse. She joins a new online gaming guild led by a friendly healer named Otter. So that nobody gets the wrong idea, she calls herself Bogwitch.
Otter is Aiden, a fifty-year-old optimist using the guild as an emotional outlet from his family drama caring for his aging mother while his brother plays house with Aiden’s ex-fiancée.
Bogwitch and Otter become fast virtual friends, but there’s a catch. Bogwitch thinks Otter is a college student. Otter assumes Bogwitch is an octogenarian.
When they finally meet face to face―after a rocky, shocking start―the unlikely pair of sunshine and stormy personalities grow tentatively closer. But Maggie’s previous relationships have left her bitter, and Aiden’s got a complicated past of his own.
Everything’s easier online. Can they make it work in real life?
Elyse: I love that the hero and heroine meet while gaming, and that the heroine is over 40!
Shana: Cathy Yardley writes coziness and consent SO well, I can’t wait for this.

Author: Rachel Lynn Solomon
Released: July 4, 2023 by Berkley
Genre: Contemporary Romance, RomanceChandler Cohen has never felt more like the ghost in “ghostwriter” until she attends a signing for a book she wrote—and the author doesn’t even recognize her. The evening turns more promising when she meets a charming man at the bar and immediately connects with him. But when all their sexual tension culminates in a spectacularly awkward hookup, she decides this is one night better off forgotten.
Unfortunately, that’s easier said than done. Her next project is ghostwriting a memoir for Finn Walsh, a C-list actor best known for playing a lovable nerd on a cult classic werewolf show who now makes a living appearing at fan conventions across the country. But Chandler knows him better from their one-night stand of hilarious mishaps.
Chandler’s determined to keep their partnership as professional as possible, but when she admits to Finn their night together wasn’t as mind-blowing as he thought it was, he’s distraught. He intrigues her enough that they strike a deal: when they’re not working on his book, Chandler will school Finn in the art of satisfaction. As they grow closer both in and out of the bedroom, they must figure out which is more important, business or pleasure—or if there’s a way for them to have both.
Solomon’s newest contemporary romance with a hero who thinks he’s better in bed than he really is!

Author: Simone St. James
Released: July 4, 2023 by Berkley
Genre: Gothic, Historical: European, Literary Fiction, Paranormal, Mystery/Thriller“Portis House emerged from the fog as we approached, showing itself slowly as a long, low shadow….”
In 1919, Kitty Weekes, pretty, resourceful, and on the run, falsifies her background to obtain a nursing position at Portis House, a remote hospital for soldiers left shell-shocked by the horrors of the Great War. Hiding the shame of their mental instability in what was once a magnificent private estate, the patients suffer from nervous attacks and tormenting dreams. But something more is going on at Portis House—its plaster is crumbling, its plumbing makes eerie noises, and strange breaths of cold waft through the empty rooms. It’s known that the former occupants left abruptly, but where did they go? And why do the patients all seem to share the same nightmare, one so horrific that they dare not speak of it?
Kitty finds a dangerous ally in Jack Yates, an inmate who may be a war hero, a madman… or maybe both. But even as Kitty and Jack create a secret, intimate alliance to uncover the truth, disturbing revelations suggest the presence of powerful spectral forces. And when a medical catastrophe leaves them even more isolated, they must battle the menace on their own, caught in the heart of a mystery that could destroy them both.
Elyse: I will read anything St. James writes, and this Gothic WWI thriller is no exception.

The Simone St. James book “Silence for the Dead” is a reissue with a new cover. It was originally published on April 1, 2014 (no joke), so make sure you haven’t already purchased it. I love her books and this one is very good.
@Andrea2 thank you – I was looking at the description thinking I had enjoyed a book exactly like that and hoping this would be as good, not that it would be the same book, lol.
New personal record: every.single.one. of these books is now on my want to read list. Not sure if I should be saying thank you or damn you. 😉
I really enjoyed the Cathy Yardley book which was available for Prime Reading before its release. Someone here on the bitchery pointed that out, so thank you! I really enjoyed it! Its cozy and has heart and meat to it!
I was feeling pretty good about my wallet and my reserve list at the GBPL, but you’ve blown that for me. ARGHHHH!
I’ve just started ROLE PLAYING, another book where the audio version is $1.99 if you buy the digital version. Enjoyable so far.
I’ve been in a serious romance rut for a few months now but I LOVE Rachel Lynn Solomon so I went and bought this and WOW! Read it in just a few hours! I really love Weather Girl but I think this book might be her best (also her steamiest) I was riding such a high I went and bought Role Playing as well and ended up finishing that by the end of the day. Not my usual book style but I really enjoyed it !
Read the Wall of Winnipeg several years ago and really enjoyed it. I’ve liked all the Marinna Zapata books I’ve read.
Can anyone confirm if, now that Mariana Zapata has a traditional publisher, has an editor finally called her out on the fact that every got-danged time a character laughs it is a snicker??? No one snickers that much! And it’s in all of her books! I made the mistake of reading several of hers back-to-back and once I noticed it, I couldn’t go back
