  • Battle Royal

    Battle Royal by Lucy Parker

RECOMMENDED: Battle Royal by Lucy Parker is $1.99! Catherine gave this one an A-:

I loved Battle Royal. While it did have minor flaws, it more than made up for them with humour, tenderness, and food porn.

Beloved author Lucy Parker pens a delicious new romantic comedy that is a battle of whisks and wits.

    Ready…

Four years ago, Sylvie Fairchild charmed the world as a contestant on the hit baking show, Operation Cake. Her ingenious, colorful creations captivated viewers and intrigued all but one of the judges, Dominic De Vere, the hottest pastry chef in London. When her glittery unicorn cake went spectacularly sideways, Dominic was quick to vote her off the show. Since then, Sylvie has managed to use her fame to help fulfill her dream of opening a bakery, Sugar Fair. The toast of Instagram, Sugar Fair has captured the attention of the Operation Cake producers…and a princess.

    Set…

Dominic is His Majesty the King’s favorite baker, the go-to for sweet-toothed A-List celebrities, and a veritable British institution. He’s brilliant, talented, hard-working. And an icy, starchy grouch. Learning that the irksome Sylvie will be joining him on the Operation Cake judging panel is enough to make the famously dour baker even more grim. Her fantastical baking is only slightly more troublesome than the fact that he can’t stop thinking about her pink-streaked hair and irrepressible dimple.

    Match…

When Dominic and Sylvie learn they will be fighting for the once in a lifetime opportunity to bake a cake for the upcoming wedding of Princess Rose, the flour begins to fly as they’re both determined to come out on top.

The bride adores Sylvie’s quirky style. The palace wants Dominic’s classic perfection.

In this royal battle, can there be room for two?

  • The Return

    The Return by Rachel Harrison

RECOMMENDED: The Return by Rachel Harrison is $2.99! Carrie gave this spooky book a B+:

This a scary story because scary things happen (chases and gore and jump scares, oh my!) but it’s a powerful story because it’s really about friendship, truth, and grief. There’s so much powerful emotional and universal truth behind the body horror, and so much woven in commentary on everything from how patriarchy damages women, to how women bond for survival even as they judge one another, to how our college selves change after college ends.

A group of friends reunite after one of them has returned from a mysterious two-year disappearance in this edgy and haunting debut.

Julie is missing, and the missing don’t often return. But Elise knows Julie better than anyone, and she feels in her bones that her best friend is out there, and that one day she’ll come back. She’s right. Two years to the day that Julie went missing, she reappears with no memory of where she’s been or what happened to her.

Along with Molly and Mae, their two close friends from college, the women decide to reunite at a remote inn. But the second Elise sees Julie, she knows something is wrong—she’s emaciated, with sallow skin and odd appetites. And as the weekend unfurls, it becomes impossible to deny that the Julie who vanished two years ago is not the same Julie who came back. But then who—or what—is she?

  • The Candid Life of Meena Dave

The Candid Life of Meena Dave by Namrata Patel

The Candid Life of Meena Dave by Namrata Patel is $2.49! This was mentioned on the site before. I believe this one skews more toward women’s fiction or fiction with strong romantic elements. Have you read this one?

A woman embarks on an unexpected journey into her past in an engrossing novel about identity, family secrets, and rediscovering the need to belong.

Meena Dave is a photojournalist and a nomad. She has no family, no permanent address, and no long-term attachments, preferring to observe the world at a distance through the lens of her camera. But Meena’s solitary life is turned upside down when she unexpectedly inherits an apartment in a Victorian brownstone in historic Back Bay, Boston.

Though Meena’s impulse is to sell it and keep moving, she decides to use her journalistic instinct to follow the story that landed her in the home of a stranger. It’s a mystery that comes with a series of hidden clues, a trio of meddling Indian aunties, and a handsome next-door neighbor. For Meena it’s a chance for newfound friendships, community, and culture she never thought possible. And a window into her past she never expected.

Now as everything unknown to Meena comes into focus, she must reconcile who she wants to be with who she really is.

  • The One Love Collection

The One Love Collection by Lauren Blakely

The One Love Collection by Lauren Blakely is FREE! This boxed set came out today and includes four contemporary romances from Blakely’s One Love series. Lots of catnip it seems, but I think these books rely on the hero’s POV. Or is that another series of hers?

Indulge in four bestselling standalone romances from #1 NYT Bestseller Lauren Blakely in the One Love Collection!

    THE SEXY ONE…
Let me count the ways why falling into forbidden love is not my wisest move…

    1. She works with me every single day.

Did I mention she’s gorgeous, sweet, kind and smart?

    2. She works in my home.

Playing with my five-year-old daughter. Teaching my little girl. Cooking for my princess. Which means…

    3. She’s the nanny.

And that makes her completely off-limits…But it doesn’t stop me from wanting her. All of her.

    THE HOT ONE…
At first glance, stripping naked at my ex-girlfriend’s place of work might not seem like the brightest way to win her heart again. But trust me on this count—she always liked me best without any clothes on. And sometimes you have to play to your strengths when you’re fighting an uphill battle. As a lawyer, I know how to fight, and I’m prepared to fight hard for her. Because sometimes you need a second chance at first love.

    THE KNOCKED UP PLAN…
There are three little words most guys don’t want to hear on the first date. Not those…I mean these… “knock me up.”

This single gal has had enough of the games, the BS and the endless chase. I know what I want most, and it’s not true love. It’s a bun in the oven, and I’m not afraid to hit up my s-e-x-on-a-stick co-worker to do the job. Ryder is gorgeous, witty and charming — and he’s also a notorious commitment-phobe. That makes him the perfect candidate to make a deposit in the bank of me.

I won’t fall for him, he won’t fall for me, and there’s no way baby will make three.
    Right?

    COME AS YOU ARE…
I couldn’t have scripted a more perfect night.

For one fantastic evening, at a masquerade party in the heart of Manhattan, I’m not the millionaire everyone wants a piece of. Fine—multimillionaire. But who’s counting all those commas? Not me, and not the most intriguing woman I’ve ever met, who happens to like dancing, witty banter, and passionate up-against-the-wall action as much as I do.

There’s no need for names or business cards. And that’s why I’m eager to get to know her more, since my mystery woman seems to like me for me, rather than for my huge…bank account.

Everything’s coming up aces. Until the next day when things get a little complicated. (Newsflash — a lot complicated.)

  1. Darlynne says:

BATTLE ROYAL was enjoyable and I especially liked how (iirc) Dominic really cared for Sylvie, until he opened his mouth and something horrible came out.

THE CANDID LIFE OF MINA DAVE is in my TBR, I just clicked THE ONE LOVE COLLECTION (free!). Is anyone else drowning in unread books? I mean happily, of course, but drowning nonetheless? If anyone dares ask whether I will read all these books, I am working on it.

But, honestly, there’s always the concern that I will die next to a pile of books I was intending to read (h/t to Lemony Snickett for that quote, which I have on a tea towel). Still, I persist.

  2. LML says:

@Darlynne, oh, my concern – no, my fear – also. My TBR nears 1000 titles, I can read two books each day if I don’t work but I can’t manage three without losing touch with reality. And publishers just keep publishing…

  3. seantheaussie says:

Battle Royal was excellent, as is usual for Lucy.

  4. SusanE says:

Regarding TBR piles, there are two things I learned to accept as I got older:

    1) You will never learn everything there is to know.

    2) You will never read everything you want to read.

So I just don’t worry about it anymore.

  5. flchen1 says:

Courtney Milan’s Once Upon a Marquess (Worth Saga 1) is $.99.

  6. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Darlynne & @LML: one of my favorite quotes (I’ve probably posted it here before) is from Schopenhauer: “We buy books in the hopes that we will live long enough to read them.”

  7. Susanna says:

My TBR pile is a double-headed peak, as high as I can reach, and it towers over my bed. My mother is convinced it will fall on me in the night – but what a way to go!

  8. flchen1 says:

Jennifer Bernard’s celebrating her birthday this month by putting her Lost Harbor, Alaska, series on sale. The first is free; the next four are $.99 each. This is a great small-town contemporary series—one of my favorites!

  9. flchen1 says:

Sunshine by Robin McKinley is on sale for $1.99.

  10. Bre says:

Lucy Parker is an autobuy for me. She can do no wrong in my eyes.

  11. spinsterrevival says:

I have an actual magnet on my fridge that says, “I assume I’ll die when my stack of unread books falls on top of me.” It makes me laugh, although nowadays I mostly read ebooks which makes it easier to ignore how many I have on the Kindle app on my iPad.

But I recently culled the scores of free ones on there and got them to a lower level of TBR that at least sound good and interesting (versus sounding free which is a whole different psychological issue I have).
