By the Book by Jasmine Guillory

By the Book by Jasmine Guillory is $2.99! This could be a leftover deal from the Kindle Daily Deals of yesterday, so apologies if this one goes rather quickly. This is a Beauty and the Beast inspired contemporary romance and we’ve had the cover on Cover Awe before.

    A tale as old as time—for a new generation…

Isabelle is completely lost. When she first began her career in publishing right out of college, she did not expect to be twenty-five, living at home, still an editorial assistant, and the only Black employee at her publishing house. Overworked and underpaid, constantly torn between speaking up or stifling herself, Izzy thinks there must be more to this publishing life. So when she overhears her boss complaining about a beastly high-profile author who has failed to deliver his long-awaited manuscript, Isabelle sees an opportunity to finally get the promotion she deserves.

All she has to do is go to the author’s Santa Barbara mansion and give him a quick pep talk or three. How hard could it be?

But Izzy quickly finds out she is in over her head. Beau Towers is not some celebrity lightweight writing a tell-all memoir. He is jaded and withdrawn and—it turns out—just as lost as Izzy. But despite his standoffishness, Izzy needs Beau to deliver, and with her encouragement, his story begins to spill onto the page. They soon discover they have more in common than either of them expected, and as their deadline nears, Izzy and Beau begin to realize there may be something there that wasn’t there before.

Best-selling author Jasmine Guillory’s reimagining of a beloved fairy tale is a romantic triumph of love and acceptance and learning that sometimes to truly know a person you have to read between the lines.

  • Float Plan

    Float Plan by Trish Doller

Float Plan by Trish Doller is $2.99! Aarya mentioned this one on a previous Hide Your Wallet. I remember seeing readers I know and trust recommend it, but it flew under the radar for me. Grief and suicide are themes in this one, so check for triggers before buying.

Critically acclaimed author Trish Doller’s unforgettable and romantic adult debut about setting sail, starting over, and finding yourself.

Since the loss of her fiancé, Anna has spent the last year foundering on land, shipwrecked by her grief and inability to move on. But when a reminder goes off about a trip they were supposed to take, she impulsively sets off in their sailboat, intending to complete the planned voyage around the Caribbean that Ben had mapped out for them.

But after a treacherous night’s sail and a brush with an ocean tanker, she decides she can’t do it alone, and hires a professional sailor to help her get to Puerto Rico. Much like her, Keane is struggling with a very different future than the one he had planned, and he can’t refuse her offer. Together they find a way to rebuild their lives and the possibility of new love.

  • The Rose

    The Rose by Tiffany Reisz

The Rose by Tiffany Reisz is $1.99! This is book two in The Godwicks series which is a mix of contemporary, fantasy, and erotic romance. The first book, The Red, was favorably reviewed here. I don’t think they need to be read in order, but correct me if I’m wrong.

Author Tiffany Reisz returns to the world of The Red with an imaginative sequel full of lust and magic, and the dangers unleashed when the two are combined…

On the day of Lia’s university graduation party, her parents—wealthy art collectors with friends in high places—gift her a beautiful wine cup, a rare artifact decorated with roses. It’s a stunning gift, and one that August Bowman, a friend of her parents and a guest at Lia’s party, also has his eye on. The cup, August tells her, is known as the Rose kylix, and it’s no ordinary cup. It was used in the temple ceremonies of Eros, Greek god of erotic love, and has the power to bring the most intimate sexual fantasies to life.

But Lia is skeptical of August’s claims of the cup’s mythology and magic—after all, he’s a collector himself, and she suspects he just wants to get his hands on this impressive piece of art. So he dares her to try it for herself, and when Lia drinks from the Rose kylix she is suddenly immersed in an erotic myth so vivid it seems real—as though she’s living out the most sensual fantasy with August by her side…

Realizing the true power of this ancient and dangerous relic, Lia is even more wary of giving it up, though August insists it is only safe with him. He’s willing to pay the full value of the cup, but Lia has another type of trade in mind. One that finds them more tangled up in each other—and in fantasy—than either was prepared for.

  • Kushiel’s Dart

    Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey

READER RECOMMENDED: Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey is $2.99! This is a highly recommended fantasy novel and we have a great guest squee from a reader named Betty:

This book was the first of a trilogy and there is a damn good reason the series is listed among the best of its genre. It is like Lord of the Ringswith anal sex. It is like The Wheel of Time with BDSM. It is like The Wizard of Earthsea with un-emphasized and natural bisexuality. It was Game of Thrones with less incest and more consensual sex.

    Seriously, I loved Kushiel’s Dart.

The land of Terre d’Ange is a place of unsurpassing beauty and grace. It is said that angels found the land and saw it was good… and the ensuing race that rose from the seed of angels and men live by one simple rule: Love as thou wilt.

Phèdre nó Delaunay is a young woman who was born with a scarlet mote in her left eye. Sold into indentured servitude as a child, her bond is purchased by Anafiel Delaunay, a nobleman with very a special mission… and the first one to recognize who and what she is: one pricked by Kushiel’s Dart, chosen to forever experience pain and pleasure as one.

Phèdre is trained equally in the courtly arts and the talents of the bedchamber, but, above all, the ability to observe, remember, and analyze. Almost as talented a spy as she is courtesan, Phèdre stumbles upon a plot that threatens the very foundations of her homeland. Treachery sets her on her path; love and honor goad her further. And in the doing, it will take her to the edge of despair… and beyond. Hateful friend, loving enemy, beloved assassin; they can all wear the same glittering mask in this world, and Phèdre will get but one chance to save all that she holds dear.

Set in a world of cunning poets, deadly courtiers, heroic traitors, and a truly Machiavellian villainess, this is a novel of grandeur, luxuriance, sacrifice, betrayal, and deeply laid conspiracies. Not since Dune has there been an epic on the scale of Kushiel’s Dart-a massive tale about the violent death of an old age, and the birth of a new.

BURN THE DARK: MALUS DOMESTICA #1 by S.A. Hunt is $2.99.

  2. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I highly recommend FLOAT PLAN. It’s a beautifully written about grief, loss, and learning to love again. And any book that can make me—pretty much the definition of “homebody”—want to sail around the Caribbean is definitely doing something right!

  3. Kareni says:

I quite enjoyed Float Plan by Trish Doller, so I’ll second @DDD’s recommendation.

  4. FashionablyEvil says:

BY THE BOOK was okay—it felt a little contrived and there’s more telling than showing. I was glad I checked it out of the library rather than purchasing.

  5. Malin says:

Kushiel’s Dart remains one of my favourite fantasy novels of all time.

  7. Ely says:

THE RED is one of the most banana-pants books I’ve ever read. It’s an extraordinary concept (sex scenes based on famous artworks), but it requires ALL the trigger warnings. And suspension of disbelief. I guess it’s fantasy romance? Sex with ghosts, maybe? Imaginary sex?

THE ROSE is the sequel to THE RED – Lia is the daughter of 2 characters from THE RED. It’s not nearly as crazypants and I found the sex scenes tame in comparison to THE RED. It’s a slightly more traditional love story, let’s say that. You definitely don’t have to read THE RED for THE ROSE to make sense.

Book 3 in this series is THE PEARL, and was probably my favorite in that it’s both a believable love story and also incredibly hot. THE PEARL features a younger man/older woman, sub/domme couple, which I think is pretty unusual.

  8. Kareni says:

Dalí by E.M. Hamill is FREE for US Kindle readers. I enjoyed this book.

This science fiction work is set in space in the future; the title character is an empath, an ambassador, and a changeling third-gender (an intersex human able to assume a male or female form at will). Dalí’s husband, wife, and unborn child were killed in a bombing six months ago and, when the novel begins, Dalí is grieving. Other third-gender changelings have gone missing from various worlds, and Dalí is recruited to go undercover to learn more.
