Links: Mascots, Artists, & More

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Hey, everyone! Did you know it was Wednesday?

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving in the U.S. A week or so ago, I asked for some dessert suggestions. Thank you so much! I think I’m going with a chocolate mousse this year and pairing it with a cinnamon whipped cream. The mousse I’ll be making this afternoon, just so I have one less thing to do tomorrow.

My partner and I also made fancy dinner reservations for the weekend. We thought about doing an intimate Thanksgiving together, but we didn’t love the thought of cooking a second (albeit smaller) Thanksgiving meal when we’ll already have leftovers.

What are your feelings on leftovers? Love ’em? Hate ’em? I remember my dad was a big fan of making sandwiches with everything piled on.

Library cat dressed up as book characters! The article is a year old but hey, new to me. Came across it on the excellent subreddit r/Eyebleach (it’s what your eyes need when you’ve Seen Some Shit).

This link was shared in the Smart Bitches discord! Yes, we have a discord! It’s very fun and available to SBTB Patreon members.

The mascot for the 2024 Paris Olympics was met with some bemused responses. While it’s been confirmed the mascots are hats, they also resemble a clitoris.

Saw this floating around on twitter: Apple Rankings. Given that I went to several apple orchards this fall, I was very curious. It has a pretty extensive rubric and a huge list of apple varietals. Where does your favorite rank? I’d love to taste the #1 apple on the list, though I haven’t seen them in New England.

Enjoy this thread of famous artists’ homes and studios! Great for both art and architecture nerds.

Don’t forget to share what cool or interesting things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

I’m never sure what’s already been shared on here (this is four years old!), but this gave me a delightful burst of energy today.

Plus, I always love HarvardTHUD, but their cover of Anti-Hero is exquisite. Don’t forget to turn on the closed captions.

I’m in the middle of reading MURDER FOR CHRISTMAS by Francis Duncan, originally published in 1949, republished in 2015. It’s a mystery with an amateur detective of a type fairly common in older books: a never married bachelor or spinster of a certain age, initially dismissed by the police, but whose understanding of human nature proves invaluable in solving the crime. The reason I bring it up here is that this amateur is a retired tobacconist with a taste for romance novels. “He [Mordecai Tremaine, the MC] switched on the reading lamp at the side of his bed and settled back against the pillows with Romantic Stories in his hand. Here was the anodyne. Here he would find balm for his soul. As literature, it might be the subject of scorn by the critics, but at least it was mellow and kindly. It offered love and romance and the humor and humanity that formed the mainspring of the world.” That statement about romance novels and their reception in the wider world could have been written yesterday, not over 70 years ago.

It’s also interesting that there was a mystery about the author. The publisher knew that Francis Duncan was a pseudonym but hadn’t a clue as to his real name.

I love leftovers! I make a bowl of mashed potatoes, turkey torn into pieces, stuffing with gravy on top. I’ll eat that non-stop until the gravy is gone.

Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate it!

Love turkey leftovers! Especially a hot turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce and bonus points for Brussel sprouts on top. Delicious.

As a lifelong Simpsons fan who yells “put it in H!” at the first sign of car trouble, I was astonished and delighted to find this deep dive into my favorite throwaway joke last night. It’s a few years old, but the research is admirable:

I’ve promised my husband turkey pot pie tomorrow. He and the teen are doing most of the cooking today (except the pies). Yay! And I’ve had a good few of the apple varieties that list rates highly, but my faves aren’t on the list at all. And I LIKE a tart apple, so I’d put Granny Smith higher on the list than they do.

57 “Barely Worth it” for Jonagold Apples? Did they even try one?!?! In my experience they are like a larger Honeycrisp, which is rated 91 “Superb.” I was initially very intrigued and wanting to try to find a SweeTango but now I am questioning their credibility :p

Sweetangos are great apples… I had no idea that they weren’t available everywhere yet, because we’ve had them here (in MN where they were cultivated, so…) for a few years now. I don’t know if I would say they are better than Honeycrisps… but it’s a close call.

  9. Karin says:

Sweetangos are good, Honeycrips are good, but you know what’s even better? Ginger Gold. Similar to a Golden Delicious but with a more mouth tingly feeling.
I’m a big fan of dessert leftovers, especially pie for breakfast. I made pecan, pumpkin and bluebarb this year.

Prepared to duel someone at dawn over the slanderously poor rating Arkansas Black apples got in that *allegedly* definitive apple ratings.

  11. HeatherT says:

Sweetangos are good, like Honeycrisp, only with more taste. They are incredibly common here in MN — I had no idea they weren’t common everywhere.

Our apple seller (Moretz Orchards in Boone, NC) has a variety called Silken that’s my favorite. My BF was a huge honeycrisp fan and finally admitted he thought the Silkens were better after I pestered him to give them a chance. They are medium-size and dull yellow, crisp and juicy and sweet. They arrive early and always sell out in a week or two. Mr. Moretz told me he only has a few trees and is trying to grow more. I’ve never seen this variety anywhere else. They don’t appear on this list so now I’m extra worried that they are some accidental NC apple that could vanish some day! I wonder if they might have multiple names though.
