Hide Your Wallet

October 2022 New Releases, Part Two

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.

Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), and we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.

We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as early as the bigger trade houses.

As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments.

  • Some Bali to Love

Some Bali to Love by Carla de Guzman

    Author: Carla de Guzman
    Released: October 15, 2022
    Genre: ,

Ava Bonifacio’s plan was simple-attend her friends’ engagement party, look good, toast the happy couple and get out. What she hadn’t planned on was kissing Scott Sabio in front of the entire party to ward off the jerk her friend was trying to set her up with. Scott, who she hasn’t seen or spoken to in nine years. Scott, who used to know absolutely everything about Ava.

The kiss makes it a little hard to execute the ‘get out’ part of her plan. Especially when her bride-to-be friend announces her brilliant idea-a five day, all expenses paid trip for their little barkada to Bali to shoot content for her vlog-and Ava’s pride and pettiness refuses to back down on the fake boyfriend ruse she already started.

Scott’s more than happy to spend time with an old friend. He hadn’t exactly expected that she would speak to him, let alone fake date him after he ghosted her nine years ago. But as the unBalievable sun starts to rise and set in Ava’s eyes, Scott dares to hope in a future for them, one beyond the beach shores.

Aarya: Super cute blurb! I visited Bali when I was a little kid, so it’ll be fun to revisit via a contemporary romance.

A Cosmic Kind of Love by Samantha Young

    Author: Samantha Young
Released: October 18, 2022 by Berkley
    Genre: ,

Space is the last thing an event planner and an astronaut need in this charming new romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Samantha Young.

When event planner Hallie Goodman receives party-inspiration material from the bride of her latest wedding project, the last thing she expects to find in the files are digital videos from Darcy’s ex-boyfriend. Hallie knows it’s wrong to keep watching these personal videos, but this guy is cute, funny, and an astronaut on the International Space Station to boot. She’s only human. And it’s not long until she starts sending e-mails and video diaries to his discontinued NASA address. Since they’re bouncing back, there’s no way anyone will ever be able to see them…right?

Christopher Ortiz is readjusting to life on earth and being constantly in the shadow of his deceased older brother. When a friend from NASA’s IT department forwards him the e-mails and video messages Hallie has sent, he can’t help but notice how much her sense of humor and pink hair make his heart race.

Separated by screens, Hallie and Chris are falling in love with each other, one transmission at a time. But can they make their star-crossed romance work when they each learn the other’s baggage?

Amanda: I’m super curious about the epistolary element.

Elyse: Seconding Amanda. I love an epistolary romance.

  • The Boxing Baroness

The Boxing Baroness by Minerva Spencer

    Author: Minerva Spencer
Released: October 25, 2022 by Kensington Books
    Genre: ,
Series: Wicked Women of Whitechapel #1

Inspired by the real-life Boxing Baroness, acclaimed author Minerva Spencer sparkles with this brilliantly imagined story of her romance with an infuriating duke in the first of a witty, Regency-set, feminist series exploring the role of women in a rigidly patriarchal society. A new generation of readers and Bridgerton fans will delight in the rapier sharp wit, sexual fireworks, and thought-provoking entertainment of The Boxing Baroness.

Magnetic and educated, Marianne Simpson has the manner of a lady and the looks of a lover, not a fighter. Neither of which explains her occupation as a boxer in her uncle’s circus, Farnham’s Fantastical Female Fayre. Nonetheless, when St. John Powell, the exquisitely handsome Duke of Staunton, begins turning up at her shows, she finds herself dangerously distracted by the powerful peer’s mysterious presence. With her safety at stake, Marianne’s days in the ring are numbered. But how long can she fight her attraction to the man the ton calls Lord Flawless?

St. John Powell doesn’t just want Marianne Simpson, he needs her … to rescue his brother, who is being held for ransom by a treasonous English baron—the man all of Britain knows as the Rake of Rakes.

No matter how little Marianne wants to see her duplicitous ex-lover, the man responsible for the humiliating nickname the Boxing Baroness, St. John must convince her. Even if it means climbing into the ring with the beautiful boxer and taking everything she’s got . . .

Amanda: I mention this one on a recent podcast episode with Sarah. A boxing heroine? Heck yeah!

A bridesmaid and groomsman put their differences aside to get their friends down the aisle in this opposites-attract steamy romantic comedy.

They say to never meet your heroes, but when Vivian Liao’s roommate gets engaged to her favorite actor’s costar, she has no choice but to come face-to-face with Melvin Lee again. He’s just as funny and handsome as he is on-screen…but thinks she is a snob and a sellout. It’s none of his business how she chooses to live her life, no matter how charismatic he is.

Mel is used to charming audiences as an actor and stand-up comedian but can’t connect to Vivian. She’s a smart, talented artist–which is why he thinks she’s wasting her life as a corporate finance drone. The only thing uniting them is their goal for the wedding to go off without a hitch.

As they collaborate on wedding cake and karaoke parties, Mel realizes he might have seriously misjudged this bridesmaid, while Vivian discovers the best man might just be as dazzling off-screen as he is on. With the wedding underway, maybe more than one happily ever after is in the future.

Aarya: Love a romance centered around a wedding.

  1. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I know this isn’t the right place to post this, but are you still working on the Cloudflare error? I haven’t been able to open the site on my iPhone for weeks, but I was still able to open it on my laptop. Now I can’t open the site on my laptop either, and the only place I can get SBTB to open is on my kindle. I’m sure this is even more concerning & frustrating for you than it is for me–and I’m sure I can’t be the only person having difficulty opening the site. Here’s hoping you can resolve the issue soon.

  2. FashionablyEvil says:

@DDD—Sarah replied me about this a couple weeks ago—I had to clear my last month’s history to get it to stop malfunctioning. Haven’t had any problems since I did that.

On the topic of the books listed: I am a little skeptical of the Minerva Spencer—I have read some of her books and they are very Old Skool (and not in a good way.) I had to nope out of one of her books for the entirely unexamined racism, imperialism, and sex worker depiction. Maybe this one is better?

  3. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Fashinably Evil: thank you! That seems to have worked. Yay!

  4. Lena Brassard says:

On October 25, Charon’s Gold (Livi Talbot Book 6) by Skyla Dawn Cameron, in which Livi goes to the underworld to retrieve a friend, AKA This Time It’s Personal. I can’t believe I’m six books into any series and still making grabby hands. The combination of tomb-raiding adventures and the tangled web of interpersonal relationships just makes me happy.

On October 18, Blood Banished (Charmslinger Book 6) by Liza Street. I’ve only read the first in this series (Blood Bounty, which is currently free), but I enjoyed it so much I’m optimistic I’ll catch up eventually. Bounty hunter in the Weird West with vampires, shifters, demons, fae, witches, etc.

  5. MirandaB says:

Blitz by Daniel O’Malley! Next Checquey book.

  6. DonnaMarie says:

@TripleD, my sister in tech issues! SBSarah told me that it was suggested that I delete my browsing history, and et viola, the Cloudflare issue disappeared. Now I do it once a week.

  7. Liz says:

It looks like “Partners in Crime” will be out 10/18, not the 4th. Three whole days to wait… 🙁

  8. kkw says:

I have been using an incognito/private browser window in order to access the site and that seems to work, knock wood.
Ashlyn Kane has a new m/m hockey series coming out this month, which is great because there’s a real shortage lol.
Also have a hold on a pre release called Picture Perfect, because I am always willing to give a fake relationship a chance. It doesn’t always work for me, especially when it’s juvenile which I worry about because of the cartoon cover, but I have better luck with it as a catnip then, say, librarians, or Vikings, which are irresistible despite being almost inevitably awful.
We’ll see what happens but I am not planning on reading the Rai right away, because it’s important to have things to look forward to, and I like having some things I am confident I will enjoy that are not exclusively rereads.

  9. Heather M says:

I’m super intrigued by The Boxing Baroness. A few years ago I read a fantastic historical fiction about 18th century female pugilists – The Fair Fight by Anna Freeman. It’s an interesting topic.

I am well on the record of not liking illustrated covers, but something about Some Bali to Love is really appealing to me. That said, I’m pretty sure I’ve read Carla de Guzman before and bounced off her style. I’ll have to try a sample first.

  10. MaryK says:

Jordan Castillo Price’s Bucket List, #12 in The ABCs of Spellcraft, came out on 10/10. I like this series a lot. She also writes the Psycop series, and I’m fascinated by how she can write two such different and yet excellent series. Psycop is serious and thrillery while Spellcraft is pure hijinks and I like them both. She also somehow got really good narrators for the audiobooks of each series. And her editing is very professional. Color me a fan. 🙂

  11. Susan/DC says:

The blurb on the Minerva Spencer book says it was inspired by a true story, so of course I had to Google the real Boxing Baroness. The inspiration must be very loose indeed, because the real one’s story did not end well, either for her or for the earl she married.

  12. KitBee says:

Not romance, but I’m looking forward to GREYWAREN, the final book in Maggie Stiefvater’s Dreamers trilogy, which releases October 18.

  13. Lisa F says:

I really liked The Stand-Up Groomsmen; The rest are on my TBR!
