  • The Ten Thousand Doors of January

The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix Harrow

RECOMMENDED: The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow is $2.99! I read this one and gave it a B+:

If you’re in the mood for a lovely, tender fantasy novel about belonging and one that feels more like a long, relaxing bath than a hot, intense shower will all of the fancy pressure and pulsating settings you can imagine, you’ll love this one. It’s a soothing pick for when you hope to take comfort in a book

In the early 1900s, a young woman searches for her place in the world after finding a mysterious book in this captivating and lyrical debut.

In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place.

Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds, and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.

  • Read Between the Lines

Read Between the Lines by Rachel Lacey

Read Between the Lines by Rachel Lacey is $1.99! This is a contemporary f/f romance that has been mentioned on both Book Beat and Hide You Wallet. It was also an Amazon First Reads selection, so double check your ereader before buying! The second book is also on sale.

From award-winning author Rachel Lacey comes a playful romance about a Manhattan bookstore owner and a reclusive author who love to hate—and hate to love—each other.

Books are Rosie Taft’s life. And ever since she took over her mother’s beloved Manhattan bookstore, they’ve become her home too. The only thing missing is her own real-life romance like the ones she loves to read about, and Rosie has an idea of who she might like to sweep her off her feet. She’s struck up a flirty online friendship with lesbian romance author Brie, and what could be more romantic than falling in love with her favorite author?

Jane Breslin works hard to keep her professional and personal lives neatly separated. By day, she works for the family property development business. By night, she puts her steamier side on paper under her pen name: Brie. Jane hasn’t had much luck with her own love life, but her online connection with a loyal reader makes Jane wonder if she could be the one.

When Rosie learns that her bookstore’s lease has been terminated by Jane’s company, romance moves to the back burner. Even though they’re at odds, there’s no denying the sparks that fly every time they’re together. When their online identities are revealed, will Jane be able to write her way to a happy ending, or is Rosie’s heart a closed book?

  • The Cipher

    The Cipher by Isabella Maldonado

The Cipher by Isabella Maldonado is $1.99 at Amazon! This is book one in a new thriller series that has some police procedural vibes. Judging by the description, it also seems there could be a romantic subplot. If you’ve read this one, let us know below if there’s some slow burn action!

To a cunning serial killer, she was the one that got away. Until now…

FBI Special Agent Nina Guerrera escaped a serial killer’s trap at sixteen. Years later, when she’s jumped in a Virginia park, a video of the attack goes viral. Legions of new fans are not the only ones impressed with her fighting skills. The man who abducted her eleven years ago is watching. Determined to reclaim his lost prize, he commits a grisly murder designed to pull her into the investigation…but his games are just beginning. And he’s using the internet to invite the public to play along.

His coded riddles may have made him a depraved social media superstar—an enigmatic cyber-ghost dubbed “the Cipher”—but to Nina he’s a monster who preys on the vulnerable. Partnered with the FBI’s preeminent mind hunter, Dr. Jeffrey Wade, who is haunted by his own past, Nina tracks the predator across the country. Clue by clue, victim by victim, Nina races to stop a deadly killer while the world watches.

  • Chase Me

    Chase Me by Tessa Bailey

RECOMMENDEDChase Me by Tessa Bailey is $1.99! Another cover re-design for Bailey. I thought the book was a quick read and it was fun, silly, and emotional at all the right moments. The hero, Louis, is definitely a beta hero, though some of the book’s events seemed a little unnecessary. If I had to assign it a grade, I’d give it a B.

College drop-out Roxy Cumberland moved to New York with dreams of becoming an actress, but her dwindling bank account is quickly putting the kibosh on that fantasy. To make some quick cash, she signs up to perform singing telegrams. Her first customer is a gorgeous, cocky Manhattan trust-funder if she ever laid eyes on one. And what could be more humiliating than singing an ode to his junk, courtesy of his last one night stand? Maybe the fact that she’s dressed in a giant pink bunny costume…

After a night out to celebrate winning his last case, lawyer Louis McNally the Second isn’t prepared for the pounding in his head or the rabbit serenading him from the front door. But the sassy wit and sexy voice of the girl behind the mask intrigue him, and one look at her stunning face—followed by a mind-blowing kiss against his doorjamb—leaves Louis wanting more.

Roxy doesn’t need a spoiled rich boy who’s had everything in life handed to him on a Tiffany platter. But there’s more to Louis than his sexy surface and he’s determined to make Roxy see it…even if it means chasing her all over NYC.

The Ten Thousand Doors of January needs several content warnings. Some scenes in the middle were really painful.

I tried to send this link in via the Contact Us section on the website, but it didn’t want to send.

Sharon Curtis has died. She and her husband Tom wrote The Windflower, an important Old Skool romance.

  11. Kim says:

I really enjoyed the world-building in Ten Thousand Doors and I would definitely recommend it. I would add a content warning around (minor spoiler alert here???????) involuntary psychiatric hospitalization. That is a painful component in the middle of the book that I had to sort of make myself push through; I don’t remember it being super long, though.

  12. JenM says:

@Laurel, thank you for that link. I’m quite sad to hear this. Sharon and Tom Curtis wrote some of my favorite romances ever, including The Windflower and I was so sad when they decided to stop writing back in the 1980’s. They were one of the first authors I checked on when the internet finally became a thing (it’s hard now to remember what it was like when info about favorite authors was not readily available through a google search).
