Hide Your Wallet

November 2021 New Releases, Part Two

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.

Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), and we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.

We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as early as the bigger trade houses.

As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments.

  • A Rush of Wings

A Rush of Wings by Laura Weymouth

    Author: Laura Weymouth
Released: November 16, 2021 by Margaret K. McElderry Books
    Genre: ,

Rowenna Winthrop has always known there’s magic within her. But though she hears voices on the wind and possesses unusual talents, her mother Mairead believes Rowenna lacks discipline, and refuses to teach her the craft that keeps their Scottish village safe. When Mairead dies a sinister death, it seems Rowenna’s one chance to grow into her power has passed. Then, on a fateful, storm-tossed night, Rowenna rescues a handsome stranger named Gawen from a shipwreck, and her mother miraculously returns from the dead. Or so it appears.

This resurrected Mairead is nothing like the old one: to hide her new and monstrous nature, she turns Rowenna’s brothers and Gawen into swans and robs Rowenna of her voice. Forced to flee, Rowenna travels to the city of Inverness to find a way to break the curse. But monsters take many forms, and in Inverness Rowenna is soon caught in a web of strangers who want to use her raw magic for their own gain. If she wishes to save herself and the people she loves most, Rowenna will have to take her fate into her own hands, and unlock the power that has evaded her for so long.

Amanda: I can’t resist a Six Swans retelling (my favorite being Daughter of the Forest).

  • Guild Boss

    Guild Boss by Jayne Castle

    Author: Jayne Castle
Released: November 16, 2021 by Berkley
    Genre: ,
    Series: Ghost Hunters #14

Welcome to Illusion Town on the colony world of Harmony—like Las Vegas on Earth, but way more weird.

Living in this new, alien world doesn’t stop the settlers from trying to re-create what they’ve left behind. Case in point—weddings are still the highlight of any social calendar. But it’s the after-party that turns disastrous for Lucy Bell. Kidnapped and drugged as she leaves the party, she manages to escape—only to find herself lost in the mysterious, alien underground maze of glowing green tunnels beneath Illusion Town. She’s been surviving on determination and cold pizza, scavenged for her by a special dust bunny, when help finally shows up.

Gabriel Jones is the Guild Hunter sent to rescue her, but escaping the underground ruins isn’t the end of her troubles—it’s only the beginning. With no rational reason for her abduction, and her sole witness gone on another assignment for the Guild, whispers start circulating that Lucy made it all up. Soon her life unravels until she has nothing left but her pride. The last thing she expects is for Gabriel Jones to come back to town for her.

The Lucy that Gabriel finds is not the same woman he rescued, the one who looked at him as if he were her hero. This Lucy is sharp, angry, and more than a little cynical—instead of awe, she treats him with extreme caution. But a killer is still hunting her, and there aren’t a lot of options when it comes to heroes. Despite her wariness, Gabriel is also the one person who believes Lucy—after all, he was there. He’s determined to help clear her reputation, no matter what it takes. And as the new Guild Boss, his word is law, even in the lawlessness of Illusion Town.

Amanda: I’m really hoping I can just jump in here without having to play catch up.

  • The Last Daughter of York

The Last Daughter of York by Nicola Cornick

    Author: Nicola Cornick
Released: November 16, 2021 by Graydon House
    Genre: , , ,

In the winter of 1483, Francis Lovell is Richard III’s Lord Chamberlain and confidante, but the threat of Henry Tudor’s rebels has the king entrusting to Francis and his wife, Anne, his most crucial mission: protecting the young Richard of York, his brother’s surviving son and a threat to Henry’s claims to the throne.

Two years later, Richard III is dead, and Anne hides the young prince of York while Francis is hunted by agents of the new king, Henry VII. Running out of options to keep her husband and the boy safe, Anne uses the power of an ancient family relic to send them away, knowing that in doing so she will never see Francis again.

In present day, Serena Warren has been haunted by her past ever since her twin sister, Caitlin, disappeared. But when Caitlin’s bones are discovered interred in a church vault that hasn’t been opened since the eighteenth century, the police are baffled. Piecing together local folklore that speaks of a magical relic with her own hazy memories of the day Caitlin vanished, Serena begins to uncover an impossible secret that her grandfather has kept hidden, one that connects her to Anne, Francis and the young Duke of York.

Inspired by an enduring fifteenth-century mystery, Nicola Cornick interprets the events into a dazzling novel set in England on the brink of Tudor rule. Full of palace intrigue and political maneuvering, The Last Daughter of York will enthrall fans of Philippa Gregory, Susanna Kearsley and Kate Morton.

Sarah: A dual-timeline mystery between current day and Tudor era, centered around the Princes in the Tower. I love Cornick’s writing and am very excited to read this.

Your Place Next Year by Mina Esguerra

    Author: Mina Esguerra
Released: November 26, 2021 by Bright Girl Books
    Genre: , ,

Alia Monterojo may be the country director of one of the largest consulting firms in Manila, but she absolutely doesn’t want to be at this important breakfast meeting right now. In another time she would have been in La Union, spending her only free week a year at the beach, with a certain someone who doesn’t even know her full name. This year, she gets her chance, when he shows up at the breakfast meeting as an invited guest—because he’s the CEO of the small company they might acquire.

Novelette (14.5K words). Content notes: As of 2021, this is set in a somewhat near (and safer) future, and the covid lockdown/various quarantines in the Philippines happened as is, are mentioned, and have an effect on the plot and characters.

Aarya: This is a novelette (~15K, shorter than a novella) and sounds adorable.

  1. DiscoDollyDeb says:

The only book I have left on my November tbr is Sybil Bartel’s romantic-suspense, VICTOR (scheduled for November 24), about a man who falls for the woman he has under surveillance. But I’m really curious about Cate C. Wells. I haven’t read anything by her, but THE TYRANT ALPHA’S REJECTED MATE (with its subplot involving illegal farmer’s markets), mentioned in the earlier November Releases post, was released last Friday and looks intriguing. Then I was listening to the Fated Mates Best Books of 2021 podcast over the weekend and one of the women named Wells’s RUN POSY RUN as a favorite book of 2021, so I’ve now placed both books on my never-ending tbr.

  2. Carol S. says:

    @DiscoDollyDeb it’s so nice to feel like there are always new books to devour! if I ever get to the point where I don’t have a bunch of books on my to-read list, you can shove me out to sea on an ice floe. (;

  3. Lisa F says:

Last Daughter of York was a solid B+ for me; Shine a Light, Rakes, And They Lived Happily Ever After, Your Place Next Year, The Dinner Lady Detectives, Guild Boss, Rare Danger, and Tide Song are on my TBR pile.

  4. MaryK says:

Artistic License by Lucy Parker/Elle Pierson is coming out in audio this week. (Finally!! I’ve been hoping and checking for it for ages.)

I preordered the Kinsmen book when it was first announced.

  5. MirandaB says:

Go Tell the Bees that I am Gone by Diana Gabaldon. New Outlander!!

You’ll be the Death of Me by Karen McManus: I like her YA mysteries, especially One of Us is Lying.

A Counterfeit Suiter by Darcie Wilde: Next Rosalind Thorne. The last book had lots of changes, so I’m interested to see how those play out.

  6. Carrie G says:

Lily Morton has a new mm romance out November 20th titled THE CUCKOO’S CALL. I enjoy pretty much everything Morton writes so I’ll be picking this up when it comes out.

  7. Midge says:

Dearest Malachi Keogh by NR Walker dropped yesterday – it’s basially a holiday epilogue to Dearest Milton James. Just a short bit of fluff but cute.

  8. Big K says:

@DiscoDollyDeb — I really like both Cate C. wells books you mentioned – esp. Run Posy Run (which I think you will enjoy, too) and the Tyrant Alpha’s Rejected Mate was exactly what I was in the mood for, so I preordered it and have already finished it. I am not an MC gang fan, which is the rest of her books seem to be.
Knowing the books you usually recommend, I am surprised you haven’t read RPR already – in fact, I thought i herd about it from one of your posts. 🙂

  9. Marci says:

I just saw that Bob Meyer has written a follow up to Agnes and the Hitman that comes out November 16th – Shane and the Hitwoman.

From the description: “A follow up to Agnes and the Hitman featuring Shane. The core of this book is about commitment. Which is the foundation of romance. Think Grosse Pointe Blanke or RED.”

Agnes and the Hitman is a favorite of mine. I’m very curious about revisiting those characters again.

  10. PamF says:

    @DiscoDollyDeb–

I just finished the Tyrant Alpha’s Rejected Mate, and enjoyed it, though I don’t know that I’d hunt down other books by the author. It is very, very focused on the main couple and the pack members, so the farmer’s market component is more something talked about than experienced. Also Una is way more intriguing than the rather typical Alpha. The whole shifter thing always seems to leave me with unanswered question, but Wells really digs into her version of pack structure which I liked a lot.

  11. HeatherS says:

Melissa Brayden’s new f/f romance, “Marry Me”, is out today. Also, Melissa posted on her blog a few days ago that she’d had a “widow maker” heart attack in September; the odds of surviving one is only 12%.

Even if I didn’t already love her books, I would buy copies just to give her some extra financial support, since the US’s garbage for-profit healthcare system is an excellent generator of financial stress.

Read Melissa’s blog post about it here.

  12. Heidi says:

Paula Brackston – City of Time and Magic, from her Little Shop of Found Things series. I love her pacing.

Jayne Castle – Guild Boss! I thought these were over, but yeah they’re not! So much fun with this series.

    FATED BLADES!!!

Darcie Little Badger – A Snake Falls to Earth. She’s just one of those to keep your eye on. Elatsoe was her first publication.

James SA Corey – Leviathan Falls. Final Book in the series!!

  13. Heidi says:

@MaryK I had no idea. Elle Pierson = Lucy Parker? I loved Artistic License and once in a while I check to see if there’s anything new by Elle Pierson. Lol. I had no idea. Thanks for the heads up on the audio release. Such a sweet story.

  14. Midge says:

Keira Andrews will have a new m/m holiday romance out on December 2nd – ONLY ONE BED. Says it all really *g*. I expect cute holiday fluff.

  15. Merle says:

@Heidi: Thanks for the heads up on the new Darcie Little Badger! Really enjoyed Elatsoe.

  16. Midge says:

Almost missed – A WINTER’S EARL by Annabelle Greene came out recently – it’s a m/m Regency again, sounds like some angst and drama. Haven’t started reading yet though.

  17. HeatherS says:

I’m looking forward to Huda Fahmy’s autobiographical graphic novel, “Huda F Are You?”. She is the creator of Instagram webcomic @yesimhotinthis and it’s the follow up to her two previous books, “Yes I’m Hot In This” (about the trials and tribulations of being a hijabi Muslim woman of color in the West) and “That Can Be Arranged” (about her marriage to her husband – which did not involve dating). She’s incredibly funny. It’s out this next Tuesday.

  18. Lyns says:

Sorry to nitpick, but the princes in the tower were the sons of Edward IV of England, not of Richard III…

  19. Casey Sara says:

I pre-ordered Shine A Light and it was super sweet! I really wanted to get into the Hannukah spirit and had been let down by a… less authentic (but well-intentioned) other Hannukah themed romance. This hit all the sweet spots, and I’m excited to see the author’s upcoming Passover romance in the same series (a much harder holiday to make sexy/romantic, I think, lol.)
