Scoundrel of My Heart by Lorraine Heath

Scoundrel of My Heart by Lorraine Heath is 60c! This might be the lowest price I’ve seen besides free. This is a Kindle Daily Deal and only seems to be valid at Amazon right now. It’s book one in the Once Upon a Dukedom series, which released this March.

Lorraine Heath begins an exciting new series with a breathtaking romance about a young woman who must marry a titled gentleman to obtain her inheritance and the usuitable man she begins to fall madly in love with…

She is desperate to wed a duke…

Lady Kathryn Lambert must marry a titled gentleman to claim her inheritance and has finally gained the attention of a duke. Yet she is unable to forget the scandalous second son who aided in her achievement—or his betrayal.

He wants what he can never possess…

Lord Griffith Stanwick is tormented by the bitter truth that as a “spare,” he will never be able to give Kathryn what she yearns to possess. But when his father is found guilty of treason, Griff detours into the dark and dangerous corners of London, haunted by memories of the woman lost to him forever.

    Love not to be denied…

As the duke’s courtship intensifies, Kathryn discovers Griff has become a man to be reckoned with. When old passions flare and new desires ignite, she must decide if sacrificing her legacy is worth a lifetime shared with the scoundrel of her heart.

  • A Night to Surrender

A Night to Surrender by Tessa Dare

RECOMMENDED: A Night to Surrender by Tessa Dare is $2.25! This is the first book in the much loved Spindle Cove series. Sarah has really enjoyed this series (though she says this one was her least favorite of the books). She also says the setting is wonderful and the characters, especially the women, are fantastic. What’s your favorite book in the series?

Spindle Cove is the destination of choice for certain types of well-bred young ladies: the painfully shy, young wives disenchanted with matrimony, and young girls too enchanted with the wrong men; it is a haven for those who live there.

Victor Bramwell, the new Earl of Rycliff, knows he doesn’t belong here. So far as he can tell, there’s nothing in this place but spinsters . . .and sheep. But he has no choice, he has orders to gather a militia. It’s a simple mission, made complicated by the spirited, exquisite Susanna Finch–a woman who is determined to save her personal utopia from the invasion of Bram’s makeshift army.

Susanna has no use for aggravating men; Bram has sworn off interfering women. The scene is set for an epic battle; but who can be named the winner when both have so much to lose?

  • White Hot

    White Hot by Ilona Andrews

White Hot by Ilona Andrews is $2.10! This is book two in the Hidden Legacy series. Since these do need to be read in order, I hope y’all picked up the first book which was on sale yesterday!

Nevada Baylor has a unique and secret skill—she knows when people are lying—and she’s used that magic (along with plain, hard work) to keep her colorful and close-knit family’s detective agency afloat. But her new case pits her against the shadowy forces that almost destroyed the city of Houston once before, bringing Nevada back into contact with Connor “Mad” Rogan.

Rogan is a billionaire Prime—the highest rank of magic user—and as unreadable as ever, despite Nevada’s “talent.” But there’s no hiding the sparks between them. Now that the stakes are even higher, both professionally and personally, and their foes are unimaginably powerful, Rogan and Nevada will find that nothing burns like ice . . .

  • The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson is $2.99! This historical fiction is based on the real The Fugate family or “blue people” of the Appalachian Mountains and takes place during Roosevelt’s Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project. I remember this book being pretty buzzy when it first came out.

The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything—everything except books, that is.  Thanks to Roosevelt’s Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome’s got its very own  traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter.

Cussy’s not only a book woman, however,  she’s also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy’s family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble.  If Cussy wants to bring the joy of books to the hill folks, she’s going to have to confront prejudice as old as the Appalachias and suspicion as deep as the holler.

Inspired by the true blue-skinned people of Kentucky and the brave and dedicated Kentucky Pack Horse library service of the 1930s, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is a story of raw courage,  fierce strength, and one woman’s belief that books can carry us anywhere — even back home.

We read The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek for my bookclub. I went into it knowing nothing about it and while I’m usually okay with uncomfortable scenes, this books definitely needs a TW for rape, abuse, starving children, lots of death, and a high level of casual and targeted racism. I found the book quite painful to read, beautifully written and educational, yes, but almost unbearably painful. It’s a perfect example of why I rarely read LitFic these days.

@JenM, I smiled while I read your comment — not because it is funny, but because as I read the book description I thought to myself: bet there’s misery aplenty in this book. I don’t read much (if any) LitFic, either.

  3. Lynn S says:

I read both The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek and The Giver of Stars by JoJo Moyes. There was a bit of a brouhaha as both books were about the same topic and shared a couple plot points that were similar. Let me tell you: it seems this historical time of librarians delivering books to rural poor areas during the Depression was not enough to write a book about. Both books fail IMO. I agree on the trigger warnings, but beyond that neither worked. The Moyes one was maybe a tad worse but easier to read through. But my advice is to read something else. A historical fiction book I did enjoy was Once Upon a River by Dianne Setterfield.
