By the Book by Amanda Sellet

By the Book by Amanda Sellet is $2.99! This is a contemporary YA romance with a focus on book nerds. Hello! This has been featured in both Cover Awe and Hide Your Wallet. It’s  been sitting on my nightstand for quite some time, but such is the fickleness of my TBR.

In this clever YA rom-com debut perfect for fans of Kasie West and Ashley Poston, a teen obsessed with nineteenth-century literature tries to cull advice on life and love from her favorite classic heroines to disastrous results—especially when she falls for the school’s resident Lothario.

Mary Porter-Malcolm has prepared for high school in the one way she knows how: an extensive review of classic literature to help navigate the friendships, romantic liaisons, and overall drama she has come to expect from such an “esteemed” institution. When some new friends seem in danger of falling for the same tricks employed since the days of Austen and Tolstoy, Mary swoops in to create the Scoundrel Survival Guide, using archetypes of literature’s debonair bad boys to signal red flags. But despite her best efforts, she soon finds herself unable to listen to her own good advice and falling for a supposed cad—the same one she warned her friends away from. Without a convenient rain-swept moor to flee to, Mary is forced to admit that real life doesn’t follow the same rules as fiction and that if she wants a happy ending, she’s going to have to write it herself.

  • Lady Notorious

    Lady Notorious by Theresa Romain

Lady Notorious by Theresa Romain is $1.99! Sarah reviewed this one and gave it a B-:

If you read this book, and I would recommend it with some reservations, you’ll get to know two characters who are lovely together, who fit together intellectually and emotionally, who make each other happy, and change the way they see the world in ways that are constructed of all the finest dialogue and chest-tingly feels-infused moments

Who knew love would be her secret weapon?

Cassandra Benton has always survived by her wits and wiles, even working for Bow Street alongside her twin brother. When injury takes him out of commission, Cass must support the family by taking on an intriguing new case: George, Lord Northbrook, believes someone is plotting to kill his father, the Duke of Ardmore. Decades before, the duke was one of ten who formed a wager that would grant a fortune to the last survivor. But someone can’t wait for nature to take its course—and George hopes a seasoned investigator like Cass can find out who.

Cass relishes the chance to spy on the ton, shrewdly disguised as handsome Lord Northbrook’s notorious “cousin.” What she doesn’t expect is her irresistible attraction to her dashing employer, and days of investigation soon turn to passionate nights. But with a killer closing in and her charade as a lady of the ton in danger of collapsing at any moment, Cass has no choice but to put her life—and her heart—in the hands of the last man she ought to trust.

  • The Hollow Places

The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher

The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher is $1.99! I’ve enjoyed Kingfisher’s first horror novel, The Twisted Ones. If you want something spooky but is light on graphic or sexual violence, it’s worth a try. I haven’t checked out this one just yet, though it is on my radar.

A young woman discovers a strange portal in her uncle’s house, leading to madness and terror in this gripping new novel.

    Pray they are hungry.

Kara finds these words in the mysterious bunker that she’s discovered behind a hole in the wall of her uncle’s house. Freshly divorced and living back at home, Kara now becomes obsessed with these cryptic words and starts exploring the peculiar bunker—only to discover that it holds portals to countless alternate realities. But these places are haunted by creatures that seem to hear thoughts…and the more you fear them, the stronger they become.

  • Heir to the Duke

Heir to the Duke by Jane Ashford

RECOMMENDED: Heir to the Duke by Jane Ashford is 99c! This is a historical romance that starts after the main couple are married. Redheadedgirl reviewed the book earlier this year and gave it a B+ grade:

Delightful. Didn’t give me a good book noise, but engaging and fun and hey, we don’t get to go to Brighton a lot. Yay for new places!

Nathaniel Gresham, the handsome Viscount Hargove, lives a life devoted to familial duty. As his father’s eldest son, Nathaniel’s identity remains the “heir to the Duke of Langford.” But this quiet, restrained life changes the minute he marries sweet Lady Violet Devere.

Oppressed by her family all her life, Violet is longing for her marriage vows to be spoken. Though her arranged marriage to Nathaniel was not a match made for love, they’re both looking forward to the comparative freedom of married life. And Violet is determined to show Nathaniel how to enjoy it, both in and out of the bedroom.

  1. MirandaB says:

    The Hollow Places is *wonderful*.

  2. Lisa F says:

Hollow Places and Lady Notorious were both good!

  3. Cristie says:

Sarina Bowen’s Roommate is on sale for $2.49 right now.

  4. Bonnie M says:

I’ve really come to love Theresa Romain. I think I discovered her here, in fact!

Regarding Heir to the Duke and Jane Ashford’s books, I want to love them but just can’t seem to get into them. I read a couple in this series and found myself skimming most of it, which made me so sad. I found the pacing to be too slow for my liking. That being said, they aren’t awful novels, they just aren’t for me!

  5. Karin says:

I enjoyed “Heir to the Duke” but the book that comes before it in the series is even better. It was originally called “The Bargain” but recently rereleased as “A Favor for the Prince”. Extremely funny, the scientist hero is Nathaniel’s youngest brother, and the heroine gives him some very good advice about getting the family to butt out of their marriage.

  6. Escapeologist says:

Anyone else do a double take on that first book? My tiny phone screen wrapped the line right after “by Amanda” so for a split second my brain went to “SB Amanda wrote a book!”

  7. FashionablyEvil says:

I quite like Theresa Romain—she writes historicals where not everyone is a duke (or even an aristocrat), so it’s a nice change of pace.

I’m really tempted by the Kingfisher even though horror is not really my jam. I adored her Paladin books, Clocktaur Wars, and Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking, so I might be willing to give this a go. Anyone read it and can comment on the level of fright/creepiness?

  8. Todd says:

Kingfisher’s earlier horror book, The Twisted Ones, scared me – seriously creeped me out. It was a read in the daytime only book for me.

  9. LisaM says:

I am a serious scaredy-cat when it comes to horror. I couldn’t finish The Twisted Ones.

  10. MirandaB says:

I don’t think Hollow Places is as scary as Twisted Ones, however it’s scary. There’s no sexual horror (which is my ‘Nope’ button on a book). I can’t go into more detail without spoiling it.

I’m going to try spoiler text:

    Show Spoiler

Everything turns out ok for the main characters in the end. There are no animal deaths.

Again, the book is really good, and the characters are wonderful.

  11. MirandaB says:

And that didn’t work. Could someone delete the sentence after ‘text’?

    Sorry.

  12. SB Sarah says:

No worries – I fixed the text!
