Links: Long Reads & Deep Dives

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.it’s the last Wednesday in April! It really flew by, didn’t it?

Now we enter the weird in-between face of spring and summer. Not particularly a fan, but I also have bad allergies and hate the heat.

How about you? Are you excited for the next month?

Anyone you know looking for an internship? This dragon is looking for an intern (unpaid, of course) to help manage his hoard!

Obsessed with this story of an 83-year old man being hired to go undercover at a nursing home. You just know this is going to be turned into a movie or TV show.

Sarah: Valerie Parv, who died suddenly this past week, was a grand dame of romance in Australia with awards named for her. She served as a mentor for countless Australian romance writers. Her sudden death is a painful loss for the writing community.

Catherine, who shared the obituary with me, and I both noticed that in addition to her staggering achievements as a writer, her obituary contained this marvelously Australian sentence:

“She was married to her husband, former crocodile hunter, cartoonist and layout artist Paul Parv, for 38 years, until his death in 2008.”

Our condolences to the Australian writing community, her many colleagues and mentees, her friends and her family.

Do you remember author Sara Gruen, who wrote the bestselling book Water for Elephants? Apparently she became incredibly involved in trying to overturn a Californian inmate’s sentence with painful results.

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

Speaking of stories that need to be made into movies immediately, I’m obsessed with this story of a Russian man who was trapped on a Chinese idol competition show finally being voted off:

My favorite story of the week is about this couple who fell in love after meeting in their retirement community. She’s 91, he’s 98, and they are both adorable.

I’m concerned that a dragon wants social media. It…wants everyone to know where the hoard is?!

April showers bring May flowers and get this song stuck in my head https://youtu.be/pVqDQ6-iX2I

I think the youtube channel “How To Cook That” has been shared here before, but in case you don’t know it watch the adorableness of Ann Reardon and Dave https://youtu.be/AhgjaHAWeqA (Ads and paid promotion in video).

    I love mcsweeneys.

The newish trend for reactors on Youtube is to do movie reactions, so seeing all these Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer reactions in my recommendations made me want to watch Stephen Chow be Stephen Chow. His 1990 movie All for the Winner has my favorite comedic scene ever at around the 36:00 mark. I can’t even give a brief overview, it’s best going in with no idea: https://youtu.be/0OerL2VbpJI?t=2160

If only they offered “curling up and reading against the dragon” as a benefit.

This is a very thoughtful analysis of Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, the Netflix movie that made a splash on SBTB when it came out. https://www.tor.com/2021/04/29/hugo-nominated-eurovision-song-contest-the-story-of-fire-saga-is-a-bardic-fantasy/

Only a few weeks until Eurovision 2021! If you haven’t seen the real Iceland entry, treat yourself to nerdy joy: https://music.avclub.com/icelands-eurovision-2021-entry-features-sweet-shoulder-1846573883

The Sara Gruen story hurt my heart. I remember when she was on the socials talking about trying to sell her stockpile of Hatchamals and knowing that something was wrong. This piece has stayed with me.

Good gracious, the ‘Lelush’ story (straits times, thanks Heather!) is nuts! What a gorgeous guy, though. No wonder he got drafted.
