Sorcerer to the Crown
Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho is $1.99! I thought we had reviewed this, but I seem to be wrong. We did, however, mention this book on a couple podcast episodes. This is a fantasy novel with some alternate history thrown in. Overall, readers seemed to love the cast of characters, but warn it’s slow to start.
Magic and mayhem collide with the British elite in this whimsical and sparkling debut.
At his wit’s end, Zacharias Wythe, freed slave, eminently proficient magician, and Sorcerer Royal of the Unnatural Philosophers—one of the most respected organizations throughout all of Britain—ventures to the border of Fairyland to discover why England’s magical stocks are drying up.
But when his adventure brings him in contact with a most unusual comrade, a woman with immense power and an unfathomable gift, he sets on a path which will alter the nature of sorcery in all of Britain—and the world at large…

Skinwalker
Skinwalker by Faith Hunter is $1.99! This is a price-matched Kindle Daily Deal! It’s the first book in the urban fantasy Jane Yellowrock series. Reviewers commented that this definitely suffers from “first book-itis,” where a bulk of the book deals with worldbuilding, but the action really picks up during the last half of the book.
First in a brand new series from the author of the rogue mage novels
Jane Yellowrock is the last of her kind-a skinwalker of Cherokee descent who can turn into any creature she desires and hunts vampires for a living. But now she’s been hired by Katherine Fontaneau, one of the oldest vampires in New Orleans and the madam of Katie’s Ladies, to hunt a powerful rogue vampire who’s killing other vamps…

Marry in Haste
Marry in Haste by Anne Gracie is $1.99! This is book one in the Marriage of Convenience series, and can you guess what’s the trope here? I know Catherine has been a fan of this author/series, and reviewed a later installment on the site. Have you read this one?
From the award-winning author of The Summer Bride comes the first in a charming new historical romance series where marriages of convenience turn into true love matches.
Major Calbourne Rutherford returns to England on the trail of an assassin, only to find he’s become Lord Ashendon, with the responsibility for vast estates and dependent relatives. Cal can command the toughest of men, but his wild half-sisters are quite another matter. They might just be his undoing.
When he discovers that Miss Emmaline Westwood, the girls’ former teacher, guides them with ease, Cal offers her a marriage of convenience. But strong-minded and independent Emm is neither as compliant nor as proper as he expected, and Cal finds himself most inconveniently seduced by his convenient wife.
Emm knows they didn’t marry for love, yet beneath her husband’s austere facade, she catches glimpses of a man who takes her breath away. As pride, duty and passion clash, will these two stubborn hearts find more than they ever dreamed of?

Siri, Who Am I?
Siri, Who Am I? by Sam Tschida is $2.99! Carrie reviewed this one and gave it a B:
I grew to love this book, although so many parts are so wildly implausible that I can’t bring myself to push it into the A grade range. Don’t miss the beautiful Bachelor shout out and the sharp insights on the many lies we tell others and ourselves, consciously and unconsciously, as we try to survive in a difficult world. It’s going on my keeper shelf as a fun comfort read.
A Millennial with amnesia uses her Instagram account to piece together her identity in this hilarious and whip-smart comedy about the ups and downs of influencer culture.
Mia might look like a Millennial but she was born yesterday. Emerging from a coma with short-term amnesia after an accident, Mia can’t remember her own name until the Siri assistant on her iPhone provides it. Based on her cool hairstyle (undercut with glamorous waves), dress (Prada), and signature lipstick (Chanel), she senses she’s wealthy, but the only way to know for sure is to retrace her steps once she leaves the hospital. Using Instagram and Uber, she arrives at the pink duplex she calls home in her posts but finds Max, a cute, off-duty postdoc supplementing his income with a house-sitting gig. He tells her the house belongs to JP, a billionaire with a chocolate empire. A few texts later, JP confirms her wildest dreams: they’re in love, Mia is living the good life, and he’ll be back that weekend.
But as Mia and Max work backward through her Instagram and across Los Angeles to learn more about her, they discover an ugly truth behind her perfect Instagram feed, and evidence that her head wound was no accident. Did Mia have it coming? And if so, is it too late for her to rewrite her story?

I know this is technically not the place to discuss Kindle Unlimited offerings, but my favorite book of 2019, Rachel Reid’s HEATED RIVALRY, is now available through KU. So if you have KU and you’re on the fence about trying this excellent antagonists-to-lovers m/m hockey romance, here’s a perfect opportunity.
Also, one of my favorite books from last year, Rachel Van Dyken’s FINDING HIM, is a KDD for 99-cents today. It’s a beautiful & melancholy book about a woman writing a book about her late fiancé—and falling in love with the man who offers to help her write it. I loved how Van Dyken included snippets of the heroine’s book and how the late fiancé becomes an important, memorable character in FINDING HIM. (However, although FINDING HIM can be read as a stand-alone, I do recommend reading the first book in the duet, STEALING HER, first.)
Roan Parrish’s In the Middle of Somewhere is free right now on Amazon US (!)
One of my all-time fave contemporaries.
I love Anne Gracie, and her books are what brought me back to romance. I think I searched for romances that had a Heyer-feel and found her, and then I went all out reading everything she had and finding everything else (including SBTB) soon after. That was three years ago, and I haven’t looked back.
I remember liking ‘Sorcerer to the Crown,’ but not as much as I’d hoped to. The romance didn’t work for me, Zacharias’ very troubling life got short shrift, and what Prunella did with her familiars made the sequel a hard pass. The book has a lot to say about social justice (much worldbuilding = slow start) and maybe the idea was to illustrate how hard it is to do the right thing / how high the cost may be, but still. For me it was like a dessert that tasted great but made my stomach hurt.
A Heart of Blood and Ashes by Milla Vane is currently $1.99.
Skinwalker series was one of my pandemic series reads. I had book #1 on my kindle from a previous sale, and the library had the rest. They were … comfortable. Compelling enough to keep reading, but easy to put down at bedtime (which was totally what I needed). Book #14 is coming out soon, so I’m guessing that’s why this one is on sale.
In the Middle of Somewhere is also one of my all-time favorite romances. It was my first m/m romance and the one that hooked me on the genre. It’s also one of my favorite comfort reads and probably the one I go back to most often. Highly recommend it to anyone who lives snarky main characters and found family themes.
@Allison R-B: thank you for the heads-up on THE MIDDLE OF SOMEWHERE. I’ve had Roan Parrish on my “want to try” list forever, but just didn’t get around to it. I downloaded THE MUDDLE OF SOMEWHERE yesterday and I’m already halfway through! It’s so good, I almost had a Bad Decisions Book Club night!
MIDDLE
/Stupid autocorrect!
I also snagged IN THE MIDDLE OF SOMEWHERE, stayed up too late with it, and am sneaking pages in micro-breaks from tornado of Day Job emails. So good.
