  • The Raven Prince

The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt

The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt is $2.99! This book is much loved by historical romance readers, and has a 3.9-star average on GoodReads. Readers who love it especially like that the hero and heroine are both a bit unconventional: neither of them is superbly good-looking, a fact that has influenced their lives in several ways, and both are over thirty

There comes a time in a woman’s life when she must do the unthinkable – and find employment. For the widowed Anna Wren, that means taking a job as female secretary for the Earl of Swartingham.

Secretaries are always male – never female – as Anna well knows but the real downfall of her career is the realization that she is falling in love with Edward de Raaf – the Earl. But when she realizes that he is going to visit a brothel in London to take care of his ‘manly’ desires, Anna sees red – and decides to take advantage of the opportunity to also take care of her ‘womanly’ desires – with the Earl as her unknowing lover.

But the Earl has another reason for going to London. He is formalising his betrothal and trying (with little success) to forget about a secretary that has no right being female. Unhandsome, he knows that no woman wants him.

Except for the mysterious lady with whom he spent two unforgettable nights at Aphrodite’s Grotto, the most scandalous brothel in London. But when Anna’s plan is revealed, a bit of blackmail is thrown into the mix, a proposal is rejected and even the Earl himself will be unprepared for the intrigues that ensnare them.

  • Rendezvous

    Rendezvous by Amanda Quick

Rendezvous by Amanda Quick is $1.99! This is a standalone historical romance that was originally published in the early 90s. Quick fans say that this isn’t their favorite of theirs. However, others loved the earnest heroine paired with the stuffy hero. Have you read this one?

  • Cemetery Boys

    Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas is $2.99! Ellen mentioned this in a previous Hide Your Wallet and I’ve heard such great things about this book. Thomas has also been on a a few panels I’ve watched. Have any of you read this one yet? Do you agree with all the positive reviews?

A trans boy determined to prove he’s a brujo to his Latinx family summons a ghost who refuses to leave in Aiden Thomas’s paranormal YA debut.

Yadriel has summoned a ghost, and now he can’t get rid of him.

Bestowed by the ancient goddess of death, Yadriel and the gifted members of his Latinx community can see spirits: women have the power to heal bodies and souls, while men can release lost spirits to the afterlife. But Yadriel, a trans boy, has never been able to perform the tasks of the brujas – because he is a brujo.

When his cousin suddenly dies, Yadriel becomes determined to prove himself a real brujo. With the help of his cousin and best friend Maritza, he performs the ritual himself, and then sets out to find the ghost of his murdered cousin and set it free.

However, the ghost he summons is not his cousin. It’s Julian Diaz, the resident bad boy of his high school, and Julian is not about to go quietly into death. He’s determined to find out what happened and tie off some loose ends before he leaves.

Left with no choice, Yadriel agrees to help Julian, so that they can both get what they want. But the longer Yadriel spends with Julian, the less he wants to let him leave.

  1. Ren Benton says:

TROUBLE THE SAINTS by Ayala Dawn Johnson is $2.99. “An assassin falls in love and tries to fight her fate at the dawn of World War II.”

  2. Bunnifur says:

Gentleman Jim by Mimi Matthews is $1.99 at Amazon US. I added it to my wish list after I saw it recommended here, so snapped it up. Another Mimi Matthews, the Matrimonial Advertisement, is $.99. Both have their added narration at Audible for $1.99, which is a pretty good deal all on its own.

  3. Lisa F says:

This actually IS my favorite Quick; Love Augusta!

The Raven Prince is probably my pick here. Cemetery Boys is also amazing.

  4. Stefanie Magura says:

    @Bunnifur:

I think most of her books are narrated by Alex Wyndham, except for the one which is narrated by Justine Eyre. Both of whom have narrated audio books from other authors in historical romance.

  5. Bunnifur says:

Stefanie, you nailed it. Gentleman Jim is narrated by Alex Wyndham, and Matrimonial Advertisement is narrated by Justine Eyre. I was introduced to Alex Wyndham through Stella Riley’s Rockliffe series, and Justine Eyre I know through Nalini Singh’s books, which she does in addition to historical romances, as you say.

  6. PamG says:

Just want to mention how much I loathed Rendezvous. The alph-hole hero bad-mouths the extremely young heroine constantly, seduces her even though he’s contemptuous of her, and finally coerces her into marriage. The heroine on the other hand gets into hare-brained scrapes that supposedly demonstrate her spirited nature and endures all her ignobleman’s disrespect and bullying because she lurves him and believes they are meant to be together. I generally like Quick and truly love some of Krentz’s stuff, but this book not only doesn’t stand the test of time but would have ticked me off on the day of it’s release.

To be honest, it’s been awhile since I read it, but it offended me so profoundly, I don’t see myself ever reading it again. In fact, the only reason I keep it on my Kindle is so I don’t forget how much I hated it and repurchase it.

  7. batgirl says:

I’m confused by Rendezvous’s hero being “chillingly pompous and dangerous”. Isn’t “dangerous” usually referring to rakes and seducers? Or is he wasp-tongued and able to destroy someone’s reputation and credit with a single barbed setdown?

  8. Ren Benton says:

@batgirl: Looks like it’s in the “improbable number of youngish, attractive, titled men who are also SPIES” subcategory.

  9. Andrea says:

Cat Sebastian’s _A Gentleman Never Keeps Score_ is currently on sale for 99¢ at various places

  10. lisa says:

Raven Prince was my introduction to Hoyte, and its grumpy hero was delightful. The plot… eh… it’s a bit problematic. But I loved it’s dyspeptic hero.
