  • Ayesha at Last

Ayesha at Last by Uzma Jalaluddin

RECOMMENDED: Ayesha at Last by Uzma Jalaluddin is $2.99! Carrie, who will read any and all Pride and Prejudice retellings, gave this one a B+:

Now THIS is how it’s done! Ayesha At Last is a lovely loose retelling of Pride and Prejudice, with a perfect mix of humor, heartbreak, misunderstandings, and humor. It’s a contemporary set in Canada and the characters are described with empathy and with plenty of surprises.

A modern-day Muslim Pride and Prejudice for a new generation of love.

Ayesha Shamsi has a lot going on. Her dreams of being a poet have been set aside for a teaching job so she can pay off her debts to her wealthy uncle. She lives with her boisterous Muslim family and is always being reminded that her flighty younger cousin, Hafsa, is close to rejecting her one hundredth marriage proposal. Though Ayesha is lonely, she doesn’t want an arranged marriage. Then she meets Khalid who is just as smart and handsome as he is conservative and judgmental. She is irritatingly attracted to someone who looks down on her choices and dresses like he belongs in the seventh century.

When a surprise engagement is announced between Khalid and Hafsa, Ayesha is torn between how she feels about the straightforward Khalid and the unsettling new gossip she hears about his family. Looking into the rumors, she finds she has to deal with not only what she discovers about Khalid, but also the truth she realizes about herself.

  • Much Ado About You

Much Ado About You by Eloisa James

Much Ado About You by Eloisa James is $1.99! This is book one of the Essex Sisters series, and was published in 2004. This book has a 3.8-star average, and readers really loved the funny and real familial relationship between the heroine and her sisters. Have you read this one?

When you’re the oldest daughter, you don’t get to have any fun!

Witty, orphaned Tess Essex faces her duty: marry well and marry quickly, so she can arrange matches for her three sisters — beautiful Annabel, romantic Imogen and practical Josie. After all, right now they’re under the rather awkward guardianship of the perpetually tipsy Duke of Holbrook. But just when she begins to think that all might end well, one of her sisters bolts with a horse-mad young lord, and her own fiancé just plain runs away.

Which leaves Tess contemplating marriage to the sort of man she wishes to avoid — one of London’s most infamous rakes. Lucius Felton is a rogue whose own mother considers him irredeemable! He’s delicious, Annabel points out. And he’s rich, Josie notes. But although Tess finally consents to marry him, it may be for the worst reason of all. Absurd as she knows it to be, she may have fallen utterly in love . . .

  • The Demigod Complex

The Demigod Complex by Abigail Owen

The Demigod Complex by Abigail Owen is 99c! It seems like the subsequent books are also on sale. This was my pick for a previous Hide Your Wallet; I was curious about the paranormal workplace romance setup. I bought it, though right now, reading is a hardship. Did you try this one?

When Lyleia Naiad was head-hunted by Brimstone, Inc., for her job as Executive Assistant to a high-powered billionaire demigod, she was given one directive—do NOT fall in love with Castor Dioskouri. Doesn’t matter if he’s the son of Zeus and can electrify a room with a single glance. As an ex-nymph, she possesses a unique ability—a gift from the goddesses to protect nymphs from the randy gods—to resist her boss’s charms.

    Or so she thought.

He insists she accompany him to an alpha wolf shifter mating ceremony, an event where the pheromones fly, and so do clothes…and inhibitions.

Goddesses save her, because Castor has stolen into Lyleia’s heart, and she’s not so sure she can hold out much longer…

This novella was previously self published but has undergone a complete re-edit. Scenes were added, things were changed, but the kissing still remains!

  • The Forbidden Wish

The Forbidden Wish by Jessica Khoury

The Forbidden Wish by Jessica Khoury is $2.99! This is an Aladdin retelling with a jinni heroine and was recommended on two podcast episodes: Lia from Lia’s Bookish Obsession and Bea and Leah from The Ripped Bodice. This is a standalone YA fantasy. No need to worry about a cliffhanger!

She is the most powerful Jinni of all. He is a boy from the streets. Their love will shake the world…

When Aladdin discovers Zahra’s jinni lamp, Zahra is thrust back into a world she hasn’t seen in hundreds of years — a world where magic is forbidden and Zahra’s very existence is illegal. She must disguise herself to stay alive, using ancient shape-shifting magic, until her new master has selected his three wishes.

But when the King of the Jinn offers Zahra a chance to be free of her lamp forever, she seizes the opportunity—only to discover she is falling in love with Aladdin. When saving herself means betraying him, Zahra must decide once and for all: is winning her freedom worth losing her heart?

As time unravels and her enemies close in, Zahra finds herself suspended between danger and desire in this dazzling retelling of Aladdin from acclaimed author Jessica Khoury.

  1. Darlynne says:

The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune is $2.99 at Amazon US today. So is The Future of Another Timeline by Annalee Newitz. I haven’t checked if they’re price-matched.

  2. Todd says:

In regard to The Demigod Complex, I’m reminded of someone’s parody of Joyce Kilmer, “only a god can make a tree”

  3. The House by the Cerulean Sea is $2.99 at Barnes & Noble, too. (I snabbled it.)

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

A number of Elizabeth Cadell’s books are on sale for $2.99 in the kindle store right now, including THE FLEDGLING, THE BLUE SKY OF SPRING, and CONSIDER THE LILIES. If you like mid-century British women authors who write books with “plucky” heroines, this would be a good time to try some of Cadell’s work.

  5. Lisa F says:

I really, really loved Ayesha at Last!

  6. Darlynne says:

And GIDEON THE NINTH by Tamsyn Muir is still $2.99 at Amazon US.

  7. Georgina says:

Well Met by Jen DeLuca is $1.99 at both Amazon US and Amazon AU. (And probably elsewhere.) It’s about a woman who gets involved in a Renaissance Faire, which seems like a very fun premise. Carrie reviewed it here and gave it a B.

Omg House on the Cerulean Sea and Gideon the Ninth both on sale! This must be my lucky day.

  9. taffygrrl says:

I adored Well Met! I spent a lot of time at Renaissance faires when I was younger and this brought me back to them. But because the main character is new to Renaissance faires, it also makes a good read for people who have never done one before. DeLuca did a great job of creating a smaller Renfaire (rather than a behemoth like the Maryland Renaissance Faire). She also built complex characters who are overcoming difficult things that have happened in their lives, and made you cheer on their relationship as they were working out the personal issues that were obstacles to their relationship. I insta-bought the sequel but have not quite gotten to it in my TBR list. I want to read what happens to several of the other characters in this book!

Did I just gush? I think I gushed.

It’s currently $1.99 on Kobo as well: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/well-met-1
