    Witchmark by C.L. Polk

Witchmark by C.L. Polk is $2.99! This is the first in an alternate history fantasy romance series and Aarya gave it a B- in a Lightning Review:

If you’re looking for a thoughtful and romantic fantasy with nuanced worldbuilding, then I recommend Witchmark.

    C. L. Polk arrives on the scene with Witchmark, a stunning, addictive fantasy that combines intrigue, magic, betrayal, and romance.

In an original world reminiscent of Edwardian England in the shadow of a World War, cabals of noble families use their unique magical gifts to control the fates of nations, while one young man seeks only to live a life of his own.

Magic marked Miles Singer for suffering the day he was born, doomed either to be enslaved to his family’s interest or to be committed to a witches’ asylum. He went to war to escape his destiny and came home a different man, but he couldn’t leave his past behind. The war between Aeland and Laneer leaves men changed, strangers to their friends and family, but even after faking his own death and reinventing himself as a doctor at a cash-strapped veterans’ hospital, Miles can’t hide what he truly is.

When a fatally poisoned patient exposes Miles’ healing gift and his witchmark, he must put his anonymity and freedom at risk to investigate his patient’s murder. To find the truth he’ll need to rely on the family he despises, and on the kindness of the most gorgeous man he’s ever seen.

  • Magic for Liars

Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey

Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey is $2.99! This is a fantasy novel where a non-magical heroine investigates a magical murder. One of my close friends gave this five stars and I trust her opinion. However, other readers on Goodreads say they were surprisingly a bit bored.

Ivy Gamble has never wanted to be magic. She is perfectly happy with her life—she has an almost-sustainable career as a private investigator, and an empty apartment, and a slight drinking problem. It’s a great life and she doesn’t wish she was like her estranged sister, the magically gifted professor Tabitha.

But when Ivy is hired to investigate the gruesome murder of a faculty member at Tabitha’s private academy, the stalwart detective starts to lose herself in the case, the life she could have had, and the answer to the mystery that seems just out of her reach.

  • A Darker Shade of Magic

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab is $2.99! I’ve heard this book come recommended from several friends of mine, though I haven’t read it yet. Many readers loved the fantasy aspects and different cast of characters, but there are also readers who felt the book really slogged at times. Have you read this one?

From V.E. Schwab, the critically acclaimed author of Vicious, comes a new universe of daring adventure, thrilling power, and parallel Londons, beginning with A Darker Shade of Magic.

Kell is one of the last Travelers–magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes–as such, he can choose where he lands.

There’s Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there’s Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne–a place where people fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London…but no one speaks of that now.Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see–a dangerous hobby, and one that has set him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations, first robs him, then saves him from a dangerous enemy, and then forces him to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive–and that is proving trickier than they hoped.

  • Dark Desires

    Dark Desires by Eve Silver

Dark Desires by Eve Silver is 99c at Amazon! This is a Gothic romance and Elyse is a huge fan of this author and series. This is technically the first book in the Dark Gothic series, though Amazon has it listed after the second book, so who knows.

Betrayed by those she trusted, penniless and alone, Darcie Finch is forced to accept a position that no one else dares, as assistant to dangerously attractive Dr. Damien Cole. Ignoring the whispered warnings and rumours that he’s a man to fear, she takes her position at his eerie estate, where she quickly discovers that nothing is at it seems, least of all her handsome and brooding employer. As Darcie struggles with her fierce attraction to Damien, she must also deal with the blood, the disappearances … and the murders.

With her options dwindling and time running out, Darcie must rely on her instincts as she confronts the man she falling in love with. Is he an innocent and misunderstood man … or a remorseless killer who prowls the East End streets?

  1. Ren Benton says:

The Eve Silver books are unconnected, so reading order isn’t important. Dark Desires was my favorite of the series.

  2. Kit says:

In the UK, Dark Desires is the first book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It on KU so worth a re read.

  3. Arijo says:

I loathed Magic For Liars, probably because I came to it with such high hopes. I found the main character incompetent and weak; I felt SO frustrated reading this book!

  4. NomadiCat says:

I love Sarah Gailey’s other work but I DNF’d MAGIC FOR LIARS about three chapters in. The protagonist came across as bitter and whiny and I found I didn’t want to spend any more time with her. Which hasn’t deterred me from snapping up her latest, UPRIGHT WOMEN WANTED, or drooling over her latest pre-order! But MAGIC FOR LIARS just wasn’t for me.

  5. Kara says:

I’ve been so turned off by the cover of Magic For Liars that I’m actively avoiding it (is it a bad cover or is it just me?). Maybe it won’t bother me so much in digital form.

  6. Missy says:

I loved Magic for Liars but I listened the audiobook and the narrator is really good. She kept main character just on the right side of whiny for me. I think if I had read the book I would have found Ivy too irritating but the narrator kept me hooked. My two cents

  7. Jaime says:

I definitely agree that A Darker Shade of Magic is a slog for the first half or so. I put it down and picked it back up again like 4 times before I finally finished it. And it is definitely worth it for Lila Bard, who is a total badass and I adore her, but the main male character never quite clicked for me.
