Hide Your Wallet

June’s New Releases, Part Two

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.

Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), but we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.

We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as quickly as the big five.

As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments.

    Genre: , ,
Series: So Over the Holidays #2

Freshly single Rosie Holiday is on the hunt for passion and excitement. This leads her to Leo Whittaker—a bad boy who waltzed out of town, and her life, thirteen years ago. Leo isn’t the type to stick around, but Rosie’s not going to let a no-strings opportunity pass her by.

When a business trip sends Leo back to his hometown, the last thing he expects is for his first love to hand him a list of scorching-hot escapades and a deadline. He’s happy to help Rosie discover her bossy side in the bedroom. Or in a fireworks stand. Or at a Fourth of July barbecue.

Their chemistry burns bright and fast, but what tore them apart years ago is still between them. They are polar opposites. A reserved kindergarten teacher and an irreverent artist. • 40-Love

    40-Love by Olivia Dade

    Author: Olivia Dade
Released: June 18, 2020 by Hussies & Harpies Press
    Genre: ,
Series: There's Something About Marysburg #2

    This match is no game.

When a rogue wave strips Tess Dunn of her bikini top, desperate, half-naked times call for desperate, please-cover-me-kids-are-coming-closer measures. Enter Lucas Karlsson, AKA that flirty Swede in the water nearby. When he prevents her bare buoys from being exposed to fellow vacationers, even an ocean can’t drown the sparks that fly.

Lucas, a former top-level tennis pro now giving lessons at the resort, fled there after the abrupt, painful end to his injury-plagued career. But he’s finally ready to move on with his life—and after a few late-night, hands-on sessions with Tess, he’s eager to prove he’s the ace she wants.

But this match comes with challenges: She’s forty, and at twenty-six, he’s barely old enough to rent a car. Worse, they only have two weeks together before Tess returns to her assistant-principal life in Virginia. During that brief time, they’ll have to play hard, take a few risks, and find out whether their chemistry is a one-shot wonder…or whether they’re meant to be doubles partners for life.

Aarya: The three things I love most are (in descending order): 1) my family/friends, 2) romance novels, and 3) tennis. The intersection of #2 and #3 is thrilling, especially as I gave the previous book in the series (Teach Me) an A review.

  • Take a Hint, Dani Brown

Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert

    Author: Talia Hibbert
Released: June 23, 2020 by Avon
    Genre: ,
    Series: The Brown Sisters #2

Talia Hibbert returns with another charming romantic comedy about a young woman who agrees to fake date her friend after a video of him “rescuing” her from their office building goes viral…

Danika Brown knows what she wants: professional success, academic renown, and an occasional roll in the hay to relieve all that career-driven tension. But romance? Been there, done that, burned the T-shirt. Romantic partners, whatever their gender, are a distraction at best and a drain at worst. So Dani asks the universe for the perfect friend-with-benefits—someone who knows the score and knows their way around the bedroom.

When brooding security guard Zafir Ansari rescues Dani from a workplace fire drill gone wrong, it’s an obvious sign: PhD student Dani and ex-rugby player Zaf are destined to sleep together. But before she can explain that fact, a video of the heroic rescue goes viral. Now half the internet is shipping #DrRugbae—and Zaf is begging Dani to play along. Turns out, his sports charity for kids could really use the publicity. Lying to help children? Who on earth would refuse?

Dani’s plan is simple: fake a relationship in public, seduce Zaf behind the scenes. The trouble is, grumpy Zaf’s secretly a hopeless romantic—and he’s determined to corrupt Dani’s stone-cold realism. Before long, he’s tackling her fears into the dirt. But the former sports star has issues of his own, and the walls around his heart are as thick as his… um, thighs.

Suddenly, the easy lay Dani dreamed of is more complex than her thesis. Has her wish backfired? Is her focus being tested? Or is the universe just waiting for her to take a hint?

Catherine: I had the ARC of this and I absolutely LOVED it. So much. I loved Dani, and Zaf, and Zaf’s niece and his whole family actually, and Dani’s family, and… yeah. Everything about this was a delight. I’m especially a sucker for the driven heroine who meets the guy who can actually get her to relax a bit (while still respecting and supporting her achievements) trope, and this has it in spades.

    Sneezy: Yes.

  • Party of Two

Party of Two by Jasmine Guillory

    Author: Jasmine Guillory
Released: June 23, 2020 by Berkley
    Genre: ,
    Series: The Wedding Date #5

A chance meeting with a handsome stranger turns into a whirlwind affair that gets everyone talking.

Dating is the last thing on Olivia Monroe’s mind when she moves to LA to start her own law firm. But when she meets a gorgeous man at a hotel bar and they spend the entire night flirting, she discovers too late that he is none other than hotshot junior senator Max Powell. Olivia has zero interest in dating a politician, but when a cake arrives at her office with the cutest message, she can’t resist—it is chocolate cake, after all.

Olivia is surprised to find that Max is sweet, funny, and noble—not just some privileged white politician she assumed him to be. Because of Max’s high-profile job, they start seeing each other secretly, which leads to clandestine dates and silly disguises. But when they finally go public, the intense media scrutiny means people are now digging up her rocky past and criticizing her job, even her suitability as a trophy girlfriend. Olivia knows what she has with Max is something special, but is it strong enough to survive the heat of the spotlight?

Shana: Ooh, I love a political romance. Especially one offering a Scandal do-ever (without that loser Fitz). I’ve been waiting for Olivia’s book since her delightful cameo in her sister’s book, The Wedding Date. Fingers crossed for some secret romance angst to distract me from real world politics.

Yet Iseya’s walls of grief may be too high for someone like Summer to climb…until Summer’s infectious warmth shows Fox everything he’s been missing in life.

Now both men must be brave enough to trust each other, to take that leap.

To find the love they’ve always needed…

    Just like that.

Carina Adores is home to highly romantic contemporary love stories featuring beloved romance tropes, where LGBTQ+ characters find their happily-ever-afters.

In Just Like That, critically acclaimed author Cole McCade introduces us to Albin Academy: a private boys’ school where some of the world’s richest families send their problem children to learn discipline and maturity, out of the public eye.

Aarya: I know teacher/student is impossible for some folks to enjoy (for good reasons!), but I personally am okay if the romantic arc begins post-teaching and when they’re both consenting adults.

  • Mexican Gothic

    Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

    Author: Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Released: June 30, 2020 by Del Rey
    Genre: , ,

From the author of Gods of Jade and Shadow comes a reimagining of the classic gothic suspense novel, a story about an isolated mansion in 1950s Mexico — and the brave socialite drawn to its treacherous secrets.

He is trying to poison me. You must come for me, Noemí. You have to save me.

After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find — her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region.

Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough, smart, and has an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: Not of her cousin’s new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi’s dreams with visions of blood and doom.

Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family’s youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help Noemí, but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family’s past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family’s once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness.

And Noemí, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to ever leave this enigmatic house behind.

    Amanda: It’s finally here!!

Elyse: I am always here for a Gothic, and one set in the 1950s in Mexico is super intriguing.

  • To Catch An Earl

To Catch An Earl by Kate Bateman

    Author: Kate Bateman
Released: June 30, 2020 by St. Martin's Paperbacks
    Genre: ,
    Series: Bow Street Bachelors #2

A case of secret identities finds reunited lovers on opposite sides of the law in this fun, flirty Regency romance.

There’s only one case Bow Street agent Alex Harland, Earl of Melton, hasn’t cracked: the identity of the mysterious woman who stole a kiss from him before he left for war. He’s neither forgotten—nor forgiven—her for leaving him wanting. When he starts investigating the Nightjar, an elusive London jewel thief, he keeps running into the alluring Emmy Danvers, who stirs feelings he hasn’t felt in years.

Even though Emmy’s loved Alex for years, she can’t risk revealing her heart, or her identity as the Nightjar. With Alex on her case, Emmy knows that her secrets are in danger of being discovered. Their cat and mouse game heats up with every interaction, but when Emmy’s reputation—and life—is at risk, will Alex realize that some rules are made to be broken for love?

Amanda: I liked the first one well enough and I’m a sucker for a thief heroine.

Elyse: A thief heroine versus the investigator tasked with catching her. So Much Catnip.

  1. Ren Benton says:

Only one for me, on June 19, By Sea & Sky: An Esowon Story (The Sky Pirate Chronicles Book 1) by Antoine Bandele. I investigated for the rad pirate cover, stayed for the tagline.

With no magic, no brawn, and no pirate crew, Zala seeks to steal back the one treasure that matters to her most: her husband.

  2. MirandaB says:

The Angel of the Crows by Katherine Addison. I really liked Goblin Emporer and am interested in reading another book by her.

On an unrelated note, I can check books out of the library again!! We can’t browse, but we can place orders from the online catalog and they’ll get them ready for pickup.

  3. Deianira says:

Well, I already had “Daring and the Duke” and “Party of Two” preordered… but I can’t pass up “40-Love” (oh, to be merely 40 again…). And I haven’t even read the first book in that series, so I’m assuming it’s not necessary in order to enjoy this one!

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I only have two new books penciled in for the rest of June (is it really the middle of June already?): Kate Canterbary’s THE ASH AFFAIR (the next in her Adventures in Dating series) and Clare Connelly’s NOTHING LASTS FOREVER (the next in her Montebellos series).

  5. I’m looking forward to 40-LOVE. There need to be more tennis romances in the world.

  6. Briana says:

Wow. Apparently, I’ll be reading in June. I’d already preordered 6 of these and added another. Good books coming out now!!

  7. Marci says:

The third book in Lucy Gilmore’s Forever Home series PUPPY KISSES comes out June 30th. I enjoyed the first two books PUPPY LOVE and PUPPY CHRISTMAS.They are adorable stories and just the lighthearted comfort reads I’m craving right now.

  8. HeatherS says:

I’ve been looking forward to the new Cat Sebastian for months.

The first chapter of “I’ll Be The One” is up on Epic Reads if anybody wants to check it out.

Also on my list: Talia Hibbert and the Cole McCade – I am determined to get the Carina Adores book each month, no matter the premise. All the queer romance!

  9. Darlynne says:

@Ren Benton: That sounds wonderful. Thanks!

  10. Lisa F says:

So many of these are good; the Hibbert is amazing and so is The Devil of Downtown. To Catch an Earl disappointed me (low on logic!). I desperately want to read Mexican Gothic and I’ll Be the One!

    Tentatively interested in Sad Janet.

  11. WS says:

The cover of the the first book listed (Bottle Rocket) is bringing High Stepping Lady to mind. She doesn’t have the miniskirt or the lean, and it’s the wrong lifted leg position (though that’s all negotiable where High Stepping Lady is concerned), but, man, those are weird looking shorts and the pose is strange. (I know I like to stand on one foot in a spike heel all the time?)

I need to check now whether I have the Cat Sebastian book preordered…

  12. Blackjack says:

I love Hibbert’s Take a Hint, Dani Brown and agree above with Catherine’s statement about the chemistry between a driven heroine and a laid back hero. Zaf is pretty amazing and one of my favorite heroes this year, though Hibbert writes some of the sharpest heroines out there.

I’m quite intrigued by Mexican Gothic. It sounds offbeat and compelling. I look forward to reading reviews of it.

I have an arc of To Catch an Earl and can’t seem to bring myself to read it. I was disappointed in the first of the series.

  13. Laura says:

Looking forward to “Dragon Unleashed “(The Fallen Empire Book 2) by Grace Draven. She writes wonderful Fantasy /Romance books. Even the book covers are well done.
