  • One Night Wife

One Night Wife by Ainslie Paton

One Night Wife by Ainslie Paton is 99c! This is book one in The Confidence Game series and I thought we had mentioned it previously on the site, but alas, it did not already exist in our database. It’s possible I saw it from Elyse’s Goodreads because she rated it five stars.

Finley Cartwright is the queen of lost causes. That’s why she’s standing on a barstool trying to convince Friday night drinkers to donate money to her failing charity. Hitting on the guy on the next stool wasn’t part of her plan. Still, hot but grumpy venture capitalist Caleb Sherwood might just be her ticket to success.

Professional grifter and modern-day Robin Hood, Cal Sherwood is looking for a partner for a long con. Sexy Fin, doing her best Marilyn Monroe act for her cause, has the necessary qualifications. By the time he cuts her free, her charity would be thriving, and she’d have helped him charm billions out of arrogant, gullible marks to fund his social justice causes.
But just when he thinks he’s about to pull off the best con ever, his feisty new partner gets the upper hand.

  • The Wee Free Men

The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett

The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett is $1.99! I feel like Pratchett is some choice reading right about now. What do you think? This is book thirty (yes, thirty!) in the Discworld series, but it’s the first book in the Tiffany Aching spinoff.

A nightmarish danger threatens from the other side of reality . . .

Armed with only a frying pan and her common sense, young witch-to-be Tiffany Aching must defend her home against the monsters of Fairyland. Luckily she has some very unusual help: the local Nac Mac Feegle—aka the Wee Free Men—a clan of fierce, sheep-stealing, sword-wielding, six-inch-high blue men.

Together they must face headless horsemen, ferocious grimhounds, terrifying dreams come true, and ultimately the sinister Queen of the Elves herself. . . .

  • Ascension

    Ascension by A.S. Fenichel

Ascension by A.S. Fenichel is 99c! This is a historical romance with paranormal elements and the first book in the Demon Hunters series. Readers definitely say the heroine has a Buffy vibe, but others wanted more in terms of the world building. If the series interests you, the second book is also 99c!

When demons threaten London, Lady Belinda answers the call.

Lord Gabriel Thurston returns home from war to find his fiancée is not the sweet young girl he left behind. She’s grown into a mysterious woman who guards her dark secrets well. When he sees her sneaking away from a ball, he’s convinced it’s for a lover’s rendezvous. Following her to London’s slums, Gabriel watches in horror as his fiancée ruthlessly slay a man.

Lady Belinda Carlisle’s only concern was her dress for the next ball—until demons nearly killed her and changed everything. A lady by day, and a demon hunter by night, she knows where her duty lies. Ending her betrothal is the best way to protect Gabriel from death by a demon’s hand.

Gabriel soon realizes, like him, Belinda has been fighting for her country. He joins in the fight, determined to show her that their love can endure, stronger than ever.

  • Sawkill Girls

    Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand

Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand is $1.99! We mentioned this on a previous Book Beat because I saw the author describe this as “Angry, feminist, queer, horror-thriller-fantasy.” Definitely my jam. However, reviews on Goodreads mention the biggest hurdle is the writing style.

Beware of the woods and the dark, dank deep.

He’ll follow you home, and he won’t let you sleep.

    Who are the Sawkill Girls?

Marion: the new girl. Awkward and plain, steady and dependable. Weighed down by tragedy and hungry for love she’s sure she’ll never find.

Zoey: the pariah. Luckless and lonely, hurting but hiding it. Aching with grief and dreaming of vanished girls. Maybe she’s broken—or maybe everyone else is.

Val: the queen bee. Gorgeous and privileged, ruthless and regal. Words like silk and eyes like knives, a heart made of secrets and a mouth full of lies.

Their stories come together on the island of Sawkill Rock, where gleaming horses graze in rolling pastures and cold waves crash against black cliffs. Where kids whisper the legend of an insidious monster at parties and around campfires.

Where girls have been disappearing for decades, stolen away by a ravenous evil no one has dared to fight… until now.

Wait, I’m sorry — LADY BELINDA CARLISLE? Is she head over heels for demon hunting? Are her lips sealed about it? Is Lord Gabriel a cool jerk?

Wee Free Men was one of my last read-alouds with my kids when they were 11 and 8. It was a HUGE hit even though whatever accent I was trying to do for the Feegles roamed from Ireland to Scotland to Russia to a variety of Yiddish-speaking shtetls. It is definitely a kids’ book (tho one that can be appreciated by adults) and my younger kid especially HOWLED with laughter at the Feegles’ wailing (“WAILY, WAILY, WAILY”) which was very gratifying. I bet it’s amazing as an audiobook with someone who can ACTUALLY do accents, and would be a good family listen for these quarantine times.

  2. Heather Price says:

I adore Pratchett’s Tiffany Aching series. One of my favorites of all time!

  3. Lisa F says:

    @marjorie – I saw that and I screamed.

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Marjorie: And I’m sure by the end of the book, Lady Belinda will discover that Heaven is a place on Earth.

  5. Darlynne says:

Stephen Briggs’ narration of THE WEE FREE MEN is an audio work of art. Run to get it.

  6. Ren Benton says:

THE WEE FREE MEN was my first Pratchett. I was vaguely aware while reading that there were probably some in-jokes I wasn’t getting as a newcomer, but I wasn’t at all lost about what was happening in the story, so don’t worry about it being Book 30.

  7. Laurel says:

Wee Free Men is one of my son’s favorite books. He was a good reader as a child, but a reluctant reader. He tore through this book, loving every minute of it. Highly, highly recommended.

  8. Michael I says:

The description on Amazon and the beginning of Chapter 1 in the Amazon and Barnes & Noble free previews give Lady Belinda’s last name as Clayton.

The B&N “Overview” description and what appears to be the back cover in the Amazon print book preview do give her last name as Carlisle.

Probably Clayton is the actual last name but it got listed as Carlisle in some materials.

(Maybe it WAS originally Carlisle and some things got overlooked when it was changed?)

  9. MarciaS says:

Kristen Ashley’s ‘Rock Chick’ is currently free on Amazon. A couple of others in the series are $0.99 each. Cheap way to find out if you want to read her books.

  10. WS says:

Re, Belinda: I was wondering if heaven was a place on earth, myself.

  11. BellaInAus says:

I adored the wee free men so much I can’t remember the plot of the book. Whoops. Guess I’m up for a reread.

  12. Emily says:

I read Sawkill Girls in one night and I remember being very into it. It is creepy and gory and parts are sad but it also seemed very different than other supernatural YA books I’ve read.

  13. Cristie says:

Ordered both ebook and audiobook of the Pratchett after reading all the recommendations and listening to the audiobook sample. Looking forward to reading/listening to my first Pratchett.

  14. msb says:

    Crivens!

  15. Vasha says:

What stuck with me about “The Wee Free Men” was not the Feegles but the thoughts about sheepdogs and cheesemaking. As usual with Pratchett, there’s serious stuff slipped in lightly.
