  • The Governess Game

The Governess Game by Tessa Dare

RECOMMENDED: The Governess Game by Tessa Dare is $3.99! This is the second book in the Girl Meets Duke series. Elyse gave this one a perfect grade, an A:

It’s one of the best, if not the best, book I’ve read this year and it was worth all the hours I spent reading that should have been spent sleeping.

He’s been a bad, bad rake—and it takes a governess to teach him a lesson

    The accidental governess

After her livelihood slips through her fingers, Alexandra Mountbatten takes on an impossible post: transforming a pair of wild orphans into proper young ladies. However, the girls don’t need discipline. They need a loving home. Try telling that to their guardian, Chase Reynaud: duke’s heir in the streets and devil in the sheets. The ladies of London have tried—and failed—to make him settle down. Somehow, Alexandra must reach his heart . . . without risking her own.

    The infamous rake

Like any self-respecting libertine, Chase lives by one rule: no attachments. When a stubborn little governess tries to reform him, he decides to give her an education—in pleasure. That should prove he can’t be tamed. But Alexandra is more than he bargained for: clever, perceptive, passionate. She refuses to see him as a lost cause. Soon the walls around Chase’s heart are crumbling . . . and he’s in danger of falling, hard.

  • Speakeasy

    Speakeasy by Sarina Bowen

Speakeasy by Sarina Bowen is 99c! This is part of the True North series (book five). I’ve only read the first couple, but I’ve really enjoyed them. I would say this is fine as a standalone, but Bowen does use characters from previous books.

Sometimes you fall for Mr. Right. And sometimes for Mr. Right Now…

    May
Did you hear the one about the girl who walks into a bar and catches her live-in lover kissing someone else? No? You’re the only one in town who missed it.

Luckily Alec is there to wrap me up in strong arms and carry me out the door before things get too ugly. And that’s not all Alec is good at. Our unexpected chemistry makes him the perfect rebound guy.

    Alec
I should know better than to hook up with my rival’s little sister, but the fiery look in May’s eyes really turns my crank. She needs cheering up, and I’m just the guy for the job.

It’s not like I’ll fall in love. Not even after a string of scorching hot trysts, and the realization that we’re good at the same things: wild nights and familial disappointment. I don’t do love, never have, never will. So this is the perfect arrangement, for both of us.

Nobody would approve, but nobody has to know…

  • Hot Asset

    Hot Asset by Lauren Layne

Hot Asset by Lauren Layne is 99c at Amazon! This is a contemporary romance and the first book in a new series. I thought this one was okay, though not my favorite Layne. I wanted more antagonism between the characters and less immediate pants feelings. It also looks like other books in the series are on sale!

A sexy agent hounds Wall Street’s hottest new wolf in an exhilarating novel from New York Times bestselling author Lauren Layne.

Ian Bradley is the definition of a Wall Street hotshot: seven-figure salary, designer suits, and a corner office. His drive off the floor is just as potent. Every woman who knows him has felt the rush. But now he’s met his match in Lara McKenzie—a woman with the power to bring Ian to his knees.

An ambitious, whip-smart daughter of FBI agents, Lara is a rising star in fighting white-collar crime. Her latest case—the investigation of Ian Bradley for insider trading—could make her career. She knows a scoundrel when she sees one. Ian fits the bill: a cocky, ridiculously handsome bad boy with a slick swagger.

She’ll do anything to prove he’s guilty. He’ll do anything to prove he’s not. But it’s only a matter of time before their fierce battle of wits gets oh so hot and personal. Now, taking down Ian has become more than business for Lara. It’s become a pleasure—and there’s more at risk than she ever dreamed.

  • Hunted

    Hunted by Elizabeth Heiter

Hunted by Elizabeth Heiter is $1.99! Elyse says, “The first book in The Profiler series introduces us to Evelyn Baine, an FBI agent who hunts serial killers while trying to solve a mystery from her past. The suspense is creepy (think Criminal Minds), but Heiter adds a romantic subplot to balance it out. I love that Evelyn totally misses all the signals her hot Hostage Rescue Team member is giving her about how much he’s crushing on her.”

Terror stalks a small Virginia town.

FBI rising star, criminal profiler Evelyn Baine, knows how to think like a serial killer. But she’s never chased anyone like the Bakersville Burier, who hunts young women and displays them, half-buried, deep in the woods. As the body count climbs, Evelyn’s relentless pursuit of the killer puts her career – and her life – at risk. And the evil lurking in the Burier’s mind may be more than even she can unravel.

Terror is closer than she thinks.

The Bakersville Burier knows he’s got an FBI profiler on his trail. He knows who she is and where to find her. And he’s biding his time, because he’s planned a special punishment for Evelyn. She may have tracked other killers, but he vows to make this her last chase. This time it’s her turn to be hunted!

  1. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I was a little disappointed in SPEAKEASY, perhaps less because of the book itself but because I felt Bowen had the opportunity to write an f/f romance (the heroine is bi, has been in love with her straight best friend, and has been in a relationship with another woman during the course of previous books in the series) and chose instead to write a fairly standard m/f romance. I did think Bowen did a good job writing about the heroine’s recovery from alcoholism and her continued fight for sobriety.

  2. Deborah says:

Kindle freebies for books or authors I believe have received positive mentions from the SBTB community:

    • Jackie Lau’s THE ULTIMATE PI DAY PARTY
    • Molly O’Keefe’s WEDDING AT THE RIVERVIEW INN (a reissue of a HQN Superromance entitled Baby Makes Three, the first in her Riverview Inn trilogy)
    • Penny Reid’s NEANDERTHAL SEEKS HUMAN BOX SET (a bundle of Neanderthal Seeks Human and Neanderthal Marries Human from the Knitting in the City series)
    • Kennedy Ryan’s LONG SHOT (the first book in her HOOPS series)

I’d link them, but I believe 4 hyperlinks is enough to trigger comment moderation, and I don’t know how long these will be free at Amazon. Free is the best price (though there is the fine print about implicating one’s self in a monopoly that seeks to dictate terms to both authors and publishers, so that kind of sucks).

  3. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Deborah: thank you for the heads up about the O’Keefe. I read it (and loved it) initially through KU, so I’m very happy to have a copy in my permanent collection. It’s a very angsty and melancholy book (in other words, DiscoDollyDeb catnip) that put me in mind of one of my favorite O’Keefe’s from last year: ONE LAST CHANCE.

The third book in the Riverview Inn series, HOME TO THE RIVERVIEW INN, is schedule for release tomorrow.

Will there be another The Profiler book? It was published in 2013, I think, and I haven’t seen another since….

@DiscoDollyDeb – I stumbled across the Speakeasy sale when I was checking out my Amazon wishlist this weekend. I’ve loved the series so far (though I wait until the next one to read comes on sale before buying it). I was really excited for May’s book, but felt let down when I realized that it was F/M rather than F/F. I’m sure that it will be a good read – Bowen is a great writer, and I’m enjoying the series – but I was hoping for this one to stretch the world of the books a bit more.

  7. Emily B says:

I was also a little surprised that Meg’s story in Speakeasy wasn’t F/F, but I do think Bowen did a great job writing Meg’s bisexuality. Meg was completely open about her attraction to both men and women, including being able to talk about it with Alec, and Alec was never threatened by it. There was a bit of lesbian fantasy joking around between the two, but it never felt gross and May always seemed like she was getting just as much out of it as Alec. Also, Alec brings up using lube in the bedroom! Yay for lube! Meg and Alec actually became one of my favorite of Bowen’s couples.
