Help A Bitch Out - SOLVED!

HaBO: Battle of the Veterinarians

You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!

This HaBO comes from Jane, who is looking for this historical romance:

I’m trying to remember this romance novel.

The heroine is a fiery redhead type, and was maybe named Kate or Katherine.

The premise of the book is that she’s like the healer of her village that also helps with any animal problems, and then some guy from the big city with a veterinary degree comes in and shakes things up by doctoring the animals. They fall in love.

If I recall correctly, it’s the first in a series; their may even be a follow up series with their kids.

I remember one scene stupidly well, where they both come out to look at a sick horse. She says to give it hay tea, and he prescribes the same thing, and she’s smug that his big city learning isn’t all that impressive, but then he also writes a prescription for some legit animal medicine and she’s like…well damn.

It’s set in the past, like pre-cars for sure but maybe not pre-electricity.

My google-fu has failed me, so I beseech thee, smart bitches: HABO.

True love blooms over a sick horse.

It sounds like the movie, The Three Lives of Thomasina (which is actually based on a book, Thomasina: the cat who thought she was God by Paul Gallico).

Ohh, this is pinging some bells for me! Does the vet share a house with a barrister/solicitor/lawyer type person?

The only historical I can think of with a redhead and a veterinarian is Jennifer McQuiston’s Moonlight on my Mind, but the heroine is not a village healer and her name is Julianne. She has accused Patrick, the veterinarian hero of murdering his brother.

Oooooh, Thomasina. I adored the movie and adored the book even more. The movie starred Patrick McGoohan (whom I had a wicked crush on), Susan Hampshire, Karen Dotrice, and an extremely compelling ginger cat named Thomasina (according to the credits). Plus it was set in Scotland. The only thing in the movie that might not wear well was the travelling circus run by villainous “gypsies.” Still, the kids, the cat (who narrates the story), the grumpy veterinarian, the witch lady, the touch of paranormal, and, yes, the romance just blew my pre-teen mind. What I remember most about the book is how beautifully Gallico portrays this curmudgeonly rationalist veterinarian’s tender love for his little daughter.

Nena- That’s the one I’m thinking of!

I also immediately thought of Moonlight on my Mind.

Another book that came to mind was Matthew by Grace Burrowes where the hero and heroine discuss a horse foaling in the first chapter, but I don’t think Matthew was a veterinarian. The horse is a redhead named Penny!

    Hey Everyone,
I’m the originator of this question , and I finally found the book! It’s Leslie Brannen’s Healing Hearts!
