  • Amberlough

    Amberlough by Lara Elena Donnelly

RECOMMENDEDAmberlough by Lara Elena Donnelly is $2.99! Thank you to everyone who let us know about this sale! The book also has a new cover. I like it, but I’m not sure if I like it more than the old one. What do you think? Carrie read this one and really loved it, giving it an A. However, she warns of a cliffhanger. The next book is out May 15th!

Le Carré meets Cabaret in this debut spy thriller as a gay double-agent schemes to protect his smuggler lover during the rise of a fascist government coup

Welcome to Amberlough City, the illustrious but corrupt cosmopolitan beacon of Gedda. The radical One State Party — nicknamed the Ospies — is gaining popular support to unite Gedda’s four municipal governments under an ironclad, socially-conservative vision.

Not everyone agrees with the Ospies’ philosophy, including master spy Cyril DePaul and his lover Aristide Makricosta, smuggler and emcee at the popular Bumble Bee Cabaret. When Cyril’s cover is blown on a mission, however, he must become a turncoat in exchange for his life. Returning to Amberlough under the Ospies’ watchful eye, Cyril enters a complex game of deception. One of his concerns is safeguarding Aristide, who refuses to let anyone – the crooked city police or the homophobic Ospies – dictate his life.

Enter streetwise Cordelia Lehane, top dancer at the Bee and Aristide’s runner, who could be the key to Cyril’s plans—if she can be trusted. As the twinkling lights of nightclub marquees yield to the rising flames of a fascist revolution, these three will struggle to survive using whatever means — and people — necessary. Including each other.

  • The Royal We

The Royal We by Heather Cocks

RECOMMENDED: The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan is $1.99! Elyse and Redheadedgirl did a joint review of this book and they gave it an A:

RHG: So I’m giving this an A, because it was delightful and I adore the Fug Girls’ version of Harry and Kate and Wills that they’ve created in their heads (“He’s basically Great Britain’s answer to a red squirrel anyway”) and I like how they used that in writing this book.  It also passed the “Did I stay up until 3 am to finish this?  YES I DID” test.  How about you?

Elyse: Totally an A. It wasn’t as heavy in the romance as I wanted but made up for it by being addictive. I too pulled the 3 a.m. read. Plus it’s really funny and heartfelt.

In their first adult novel, authors Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan take on a story of romance and rivalries inspired by today’s most talked-about royal couple: Will and Kate.

If I’m Cinderella today, I dread who they’ll think I am tomorrow. I guess it depends on what I do next.”

American Rebecca Porter was never one for fairy-tales. Her twin sister Lacey was always the romantic, the one who daydreamed of being a princess. But it’s adventure-seeking Bex who goes to Oxford and meets dreamy Nick across the hall – and thus Bex who accidentally finds herself in love with the eventual heir to the British throne. Nick is everything she could have imagined, but Prince Nicholas has unimaginable baggage: grasping friends, a thorny family, hysterical tabloids tracking his every move, and a public that expected its future king to marry a native. On the eve of the most talked-about wedding of the century, Bex reflects on what she’s sacrificed for love — and exactly whose heart she may yet have to break.

  • Legend of the Highland Dragon

Legend of the Highland Dragon by Isabel Cooper

Legend of the Highland Dragon by Isabel Cooper is 99c! This is the first book in the Highland Dragons series. Several reviewers felt they were misled by the cover, expecting a warrior hero and a romance with lots of action. However, others loved the Victorian England setting mixed with dragons and paranormal elements. You can grab all three books in the series for less than $5!

    He Guards a Ferocious Secret

In Victorian England, gossip is often as precious as gold. But the Highlanders are a more mysterious bunch. And if anyone found out that Stephen MacAlasdair really was, he’d be hunted down, murdered, his clan wiped out. As he’s called to London on business, he’ll have to be extra vigilant—especially between sunset and the appearance of the first evening star.

Mina just wanted to find out more about the arrogant man who showed up in her employer’s office. Some might say it was part of her job. She never thought the stranger would turn into a dragon right in front of her. Or that he’d then offer her an outrageous sum of money to serve as his personal secretary. Working together night and day to track a dangerous enemy, Mina comes to see a man in love is more powerful and determined than any dragon.

  • A Desperate Fortune

A Desperate Fortune by Susanna Kearsley

A Desperate Fortune by Susanna Kearsley is $3.99! Like Kearsley’s other books, it has strong romantic elements and dual timelines. Many readers loved Sara, a woman who’s been diagnosed with Asperger’s and takes a job as a codebreaker, but other readers found the book took a while to get going. Are you a Kearsley fan?

The highly anticipated, brand-new timeslip romance from New York Times bestselling author Susanna Kearsley

For nearly 300 years, the mysterious journal of Jacobite exile Mary Dundas has lain unread-its secrets safe from prying eyes. Now, amateur codebreaker Sara Thomas has been hired by a once-famous historian to crack the journal’s cipher.

But when she arrives in Paris, Sara finds herself besieged by complications from all sides: the journal’s reclusive owner, her charming Parisian neighbor, and Mary, whose journal doesn’t hold the secrets Sara expects. As Mary’s tale grows more and more dire, Sara, too, must carefully choose which turning to take… to find the road that will lead her safely home.

Amberlough is so so so good and if the new cover gets the people who liked Berlin Babylon to read it so much the better. I can not wait until May 15th now! And there are a million stories to tell in the world that Donnlley created. It is always weird to read a book set in another world that feels so germane to this one.

  2. ms bookjunkie says:

Me: “Ooh, dragons!” *clicks to Amazon*

Me, 3 seconds later: *cough* “I own all three books and read them last year.”

  3. kkw says:

Those aren’t my favorite Isabel Cooper books, but that’s irrelevant given how much I enjoy all her work. Besides: dragons!

  4. I LOVE AMBERLOUGH AND CANNOT WAIT FOR BOOK TWO TO COME OUT. Also, if you like audiobooks, Mary Robinette Kowal narrates it and she is *amazing* and did I mention how much I am looking forward to book two???

  5. GraceElizabeth says:

I enjoyed Legend of the Highland Dragon way more than expected. Mina is brilliantly no-nonsense and Stephen is so without any kind of supernatural elegance or mystique that he’s a breath of fresh air if you’ve been reading lots of paranormal romance. It does have that weird fictional Scot thing going on, as you might expect from a novel with ‘Highland’ in the title.

  6. Lora says:

A Desperate Fortune is my FAVORITE Kearsely. I can’t recommend it highly enough. I love the heroine’s strength and loyalty and found it very moving.
