The Duchess Deal
RECOMMENDED: The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare is $1.99! This is part of a huge romance Kindle Daily Deal sale and it’s being price-matched as well. Other romances in the sale include books by Sarah MacLean, Elizabeth Hoyt, and Katee Robert. Elyse really loved this book and gave it an A grade:
I totally recommend reading The Duchess Deal, but preferably while sober so you can really appreciate all of it. It’s the perfect blend of two of my favorite fairytale tropes, it’s got a hero who never an alpha-hole, it’s funny, and it’s got female friendship. What more could you want?
When girl meets Duke, their marriage breaks all the rules…
Since his return from war, the Duke of Ashbury’s to-do list has been short and anything but sweet: brooding, glowering, menacing London ne’er-do-wells by night. Now there’s a new item on the list. He needs an heir—which means he needs a wife. When Emma Gladstone, a vicar’s daughter turned seamstress, appears in his library wearing a wedding gown, he decides on the spot that she’ll do.
His terms are simple:
– They will be husband and wife by night only.
– No lights, no kissing.
– No questions about his battle scars.
– Last, and most importantly… Once she’s pregnant with his heir, they need never share a bed again. But Emma is no pushover. She has a few rules of her own:
– They will have dinner together every evening.
– With conversation.
– And unlimited teasing.
– Last, and most importantly… Once she’s seen the man beneath the scars, he can’t stop her from falling in love…Add to Goodreads To-Read List →

Girl Waits with Gun
RECOMMENDED: Girl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart is $2.99! This is a piece of historical fiction with a group of sisters and Carrie reviewed it! It earned a B+ grade:
Girl Waits With Gun is a historical fiction about the first female deputy sheriff in the USA and her two sisters. It is set just before the outbreak of WWI and just after a major strike by silk-factory workers. It is absolutely delightful, with a heroine who is tall, loud, smart, and deeply protective of her family.
Constance Kopp doesn’t quite fit the mold. She towers over most men, has no interest in marriage or domestic affairs, and has been isolated from the world since a family secret sent her and her sisters into hiding fifteen years ago. One day a belligerent and powerful silk factory owner runs down their buggy, and a dispute over damages turns into a war of bricks, bullets, and threats as he unleashes his gang on their family farm. When the sheriff enlists her help in convicting the men, Constance is forced to confront her past and defend her family — and she does it in a way that few women of 1914 would have dared.

Assassins in Love
Assassins in Love by Kris DeLake is $2.99 at Amazon! This is a scifi romance and the first in a series. I was on the fence about buying or including this in the sale since it has a 3-star rating on Goodreads, but then I read a glowing review by Felicia Day. She describes it as Mr. and Mrs. Smith set in space. However, the review was written on 2012, so I’m unsure if the book will hold up six years later. I still bought it though.

In the Woods
In the Woods by Tana French is $2.99 at Amazon! It’s not matched elsewhere, so I’m slightly concerned this deal is almost over. This is the first book in the Dublin Murder Squad thriller series and always comes highly recommended in my monthly book group. However, Elyse has expressed some frustration that there are a few things left unanswered in this mystery. Have you read this one? Are you a fan of the series?
A gorgeously written novel that marks the debut of an astonishing new voice in psychological suspense.
As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children. He is gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours.
Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret. But when a 12-year-old girl is found murdered in the same woods, he and Detective Cassie Maddox (his partner and closest friend) find themselves investigating a case chillingly similar to the previous unsolved mystery. Now, with only snippets of long-buried memories to guide him, Ryan has the chance to uncover both the mystery of the case before him and that of his own shadowy past.

Why do you do this to me Amanda? WHY did you have to write space assasins in the title? I will never finish my project. I need to blame you and not me for still checking this website daily.
I like the Tana French series, and In the Woods is my favorite (I’d love another book with Rob), but yes, there’s a lot unanswered. Also, the series is like a 10 on the OMG ANGST meter.
I think the application for the Dublin Murder Squad has to include ‘Please recount all childhood and current traumas that will cause you to bollocks up your cases. Use as many sheets as necessary.’
The Kindle Deal of the Day on all these romance books is killing my resolution to buy very few books this year. I’m up to four already. Three from the deals today.
Clicked the link for “Assassins in Love” link and discovered I purchased it on 12/24/2012.
There are two mysteries in IN THE WOODS: a contemporary one which, if you read many mysteries, is fairly easy to solve, and a mystery from the past which is very ambiguous. I love the Tana French Dublin Murder Squad stories—my favorite is THE LIKENESS—but, as noted, they are very angsty and not all the mysteries are wrapped up neatly in a big bow at the end of each book.
Another resolution out the window. Curse you, Daily Deals!
I blew my month’s book budget on three Sarah J Maas books at the new year and now i’m….breaking my resolution.
Set yourself up for success by NEVER making resolutions about limiting books.
I’ve only read In the Woods, and I wasn’t that thrilled with it. I didn’t really feel that invested in the murder they’re actually investigating and I was frustrated that the old murder was never solved.
I know in real life cold cases that’s likely to happen, but in fiction I expect a resolution.
Since I picked up a couple of the later books at library books sales, I’ll eventually give the series another shot, but it’s not a high priority.
I enjoyed Girl with Gun a lot — very different setting and it felt very much like an old movie (in the best sense).
I would like to take this point as a nearly 20-year Amazon customer to grumble that ever since they started their own imprints, they put a LOT of their own books on sale….
In the UK we have to wait till February for The Duchess Deal, I *really* hope we get dealzzzzzz!
Space Assassins recommended by Felicia Day? Oh dear, the budget…screw it.
