Best 2017 Books on Sale: Fantasy, a Freebie, & More

NB: This week, we’re taking a look back at some of our favorite and our most popular pieces of writing this year. We’ve got a week of best-of posts to share, with reviews, cover snark, sales, and more. We hope you enjoy this saunter through the archives, and most of all, we wish you and yours a wonderful holiday and a happy new year – with all the very best of reading.

A note that both Sarah and I will be traveling during the holidays, so we’re recapping the best sales of the year. To pick these books, we check how many we’ve sold via the site and if a discount is still valid. While the book may not be listed at the same discount, we will still include books that are listed at $3.99 or less!

If a sale is no longer valid by the time the posts go live, we apologize for the inconvenience and we hope you’ll keep an eye out for those books in future sale posts.

  • A Talent for Trickery

A Talent for Trickery by Alissa Johnson

RECOMMENDEDA Talent for Trickery by Alissa Johnson is $3.82 at Amazon! The second book is the same price. I did a mulled wine recipe for this book as part of Covers & Cocktails. Carrie also reviewed it, giving it an A grade:

I liked the action and the mystery and above all I loved that Lottie’s super power is that she’s super smart and super practical. This book was funny and touching and has stayed in my head since I finished it. Now I just have to figure out how to make time for all the author’s other books. Sleep is overrated, right?

    The Lady is a Thief

Years ago, Owen Renderwell earned acclaim-and a title-for the dashing rescue of a kidnapped duchess. But only a select few knew that Scotland Yard’s most famous detective was working alongside London’s most infamous thief…and his criminally brilliant daughter, Charlotte Walker.

Lottie was like no other woman in Victorian England. She challenged him. She dazzled him. She questioned everything he believed and everything he was, and he has never wanted anyone more. And then he lost her.

Now a private detective on the trail of a murderer, Owen has stormed back into Lottie’s life. She knows that no matter what they may pretend, he will always be a man of the law and she a criminal. Yet whenever he’s near, Owen has a way of making things complicated…and long for a future that can never be theirs.

  • An Extraordinary Union

An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole is $2.99! Simply put, GET THIS BOOK. It was our book club selection for April and Sarah completely loved it:

First, yes, you should absolutely read this book immediately, if you haven’t already. There is so much happening in the conflict within each of the protagonists, between the protagonists, and around them and their allies and enemies, I can’t possibly discuss all of it, but please know: if you are a reader (and why else would you be here, right?) this book is a marvelous, intelligent, respectful, breathtaking treat for your brain.

As the Civil War rages between the states, a courageous pair of spies plunge fearlessly into a maelstrom of ignorance, deceit, and danger, combining their unique skills to alter the course of history and break the chains of the past . . .

Elle Burns is a former slave with a passion for justice and an eidetic memory. Trading in her life of freedom in Massachusetts, she returns to the indignity of slavery in the South—to spy for the Union Army.

Malcolm McCall is a detective for Pinkerton’s Secret Service. Subterfuge is his calling, but he’s facing his deadliest mission yet—risking his life to infiltrate a Rebel enclave in Virginia.

Two undercover agents who share a common cause—and an undeniable attraction—Malcolm and Elle join forces when they discover a plot that could turn the tide of the war in the Confederacy’s favor. Caught in a tightening web of wartime intrigue, and fighting a fiery and forbidden love, Malcolm and Elle must make their boldest move to preserve the Union at any cost—even if it means losing each other . . .

  • Under Her Skin

Under Her Skin by Adriana Anders

Under Her Skin by Adriana Anders is 99c! Readers warn that this is a contemporary romance on the darker side, but many say this is a great debut by Anders. I actually bought this when it was last on sale and was thrilled to see it out in the wild at my local independent bookstore. I definitely agree with the earlier statement about it being dark, but an awesome debut.

Battered by a life determined to tear him down, this quiet ex-con’s scarred hands may be the gentlest touch she’ll ever know.

…if only life were a fairy tale where Beauty was allowed to keep her Beast

Ivan thought the world was through giving him second chances. Who’d want a rough ex-con with a savior complex and a bad habit of bringing home helpless strays? Everyone in Blackwood, Virginia knew he wasn’t good enough for the fine things in life; they knew he was too damaged to save. He just needed to keep his head down, work himself to the bone, and pretend he was content with the lot he was given.

Until she came into his life. Until she changed everything.

Until he realized he would do anything, fight anyone, tear the world apart if it meant saving her.

Breath of Fire by Amanda Bouchet

Breath of Fire by Amanda Bouchet is 99c at Amazon! This is the second book in the Kingmaker Chronicles series and the final book, Heart on Fire, is due out next month. This book has a bit of a different feel than the first one, but readers are definitely going to want to know what happens with Cat and Griffin.

SHE’S DESTINED TO DESTROY THE WORLD…
“Cat” Catalia Fisa has been running from her destiny since she could crawl. The Librarian/Spy series by Susan Mann is on sale on Amazon ahead of the third book releasing on Tuesday. Book 1 is 99 cents, book 2 is $1.99. The heroine is a librarian, the hero is a spy, and though the covers look like bubblegum contemporaries, it looks like there may be competence pr0n with her using her skills to help him with a mystery or three.

I bought it last night. I played until I couldn’t see straight. I regret nothing.

  4. I actually enjoy dark romances every now and again, and I have been in the mood for them lately. SO I am going to go grab Under Her Skin, thanks for sharing.

Hope you ladies have a wonderful Christmas or Hannukah or Holidays with your families. Thanks for all the hard work you do.

They are okay, nothing special, but yes, lots of librarian competence p0rn. It was nice to see (mostly) positive portrayals of librarians.

  6. Ulrike says:

I started reading Breath of Fire this weekend, and I wish I’d only spent $.99 on it. I really liked the first book, and preordered this one before it was released. Maybe it gets better? Right now (5 chapters in), male love interest needs to DIAF, and (female) hero needs to find herself an emotionally healthy partner who gives a shit about her well-being, like AT ALL.

Um, if non-consensual bedroom spanking is your thing, I guess give it a read? I find it really, really icky.

  7. Kareni says:

Ulrike, you’re not alone. I enjoyed the first book but did not finish the second.
