  • The Necklace

    The Necklace by Claire McMillan

    Author: Claire McMillan
Released: July 4, 2017 by Touchstone
    Genre: , ,

This intoxicating novel set in the rarified world of money and society alternates between two generations of the Quincy family: the wealthy robber baron brothers who vied over a bewitching Jazz Age beauty and the young woman who inherits a spectacular and mysterious Indian necklace and its secrets.

Always the black sheep, Nell Quincy is summoned to the family farm outside Cleveland after the death of her great aunt. During a chilly meeting over cocktails, the family reads the will that makes Nell the executor of the estate and leaves her one item: a fantastically valuable, beautiful necklace from India. While the rest of the family jewels have been stored in a bank vault, Nell finds this priceless, forgotten heirloom in a Crown Royal whiskey bag stashed in the back of a dresser. As predatory Quincys circle Nell and art experts begin to question the necklace’s shadowy provenance, Nell turns to the only person she thinks she can trust—the attractive and ambitious estate lawyer who definitely is not part of the old money crowd.

Ambrose Quincy brought the necklace home from India in the 1920s as a dramatic gift for May, the woman he intended to marry. However, upon his return he discovers that May has married his brother Ethan, the “good” Quincy, devoted to helping their father with the family coal empire. As a gesture of friendship, Ambrose gives May the necklace anyway—reigniting their passion and beginning a tense love triangle. When Ethan confronts the two lovers, the encounter ends tragically, entombing a secret in the past that Nell must uncover if she is ever to claim her true Quincy birthright.

Alternating between the past and present, The Necklace is the elegant and compelling story of a star-crossed romance, long-simmering family resentments, and a young woman whose inheritance is much more than a legendary necklace.

Elyse says: I always love a mystery with historical elements.

  • Final Girls

    Final Girls by Riley Sager

    Author: Riley Sager
Released: July 11, 2017 by Dutton
    Genre:

Ten years ago, college student Quincy Carpenter went on vacation with five friends and came back alone, the only survivor of a horror movie–scale massacre. In an instant, she became a member of a club no one wants to belong to—a group of similar survivors known in the press as the Final Girls. Lisa, who lost nine sorority sisters to a college dropout’s knife; Sam, who went up against the Sack Man during her shift at the Nightlight Inn; and now Quincy, who ran bleeding through the woods to escape Pine Cottage and the man she refers to only as Him. The three girls are all attempting to put their nightmares behind them, and, with that, one another. Despite the media’s attempts, they never meet.

Now, Quincy is doing well—maybe even great, thanks to her Xanax prescription. She has a caring almost-fiancé, Jeff; a popular baking blog; a beautiful apartment; and a therapeutic presence in Coop, the police officer who saved her life all those years ago. Her memory won’t even allow her to recall the events of that night; the past is in the past.

That is, until Lisa, the first Final Girl, is found dead in her bathtub, wrists slit, and Sam, the second, appears on Quincy’s doorstep. Blowing through Quincy’s life like a whirlwind, Sam seems intent on making Quincy relive the past, with increasingly dire consequences, all of which makes Quincy question why Sam is really seeking her out. And when new details about Lisa’s death come to light, Quincy’s life becomes a race against time as she tries to unravel Sam’s truths from her lies, evade the police and hungry reporters, and, most crucially, remember what really happened at Pine Cottage, before what was started ten years ago is finished.

Amanda says: This is one of my most anticipated books of 2017!

  • Heart of the Steal

Heart of the Steal by Avon Gale

    Author: Avon Gale
Released: July 11, 2017 by Philtre Press
    Genre: , ,

Responsible, disciplined William Fox channeled his love for art and his faith in the rules into being an FBI Art Crimes agent. Right and wrong, justice and injustice—the differences are clear, and Will has spent his career drawing a line between them. Maybe his convictions have cost him relationships, but he’s not willing to compromise what he knows is right. Until the night he meets Amory Vaughn.

As the head of his family’s philanthropic foundation, Vaughn knows very well that being rich and powerful can get him almost anything he wants. And when he meets endearingly grumpy and slightly awkward William Fox, he wants him more than he’s wanted anything. Vaughn is used to being desired for his name and his money, but Will doesn’t care about either.

When Vaughn falls back on old habits and attempts to impress Will by stealing a painting Will admires, their nascent bond blows up in his face. But Vaughn isn’t willing to give up on the glimpse of passion he saw the night he took Will apart. Before Will knows it, he’s falling for the man he should have arrested, and Vaughn has to realize that some things can’t be bought or stolen. Love has to be given freely. But can a man who lives by the rules, and a man who thinks the rules don’t apply to him, ever see eye to eye?

Heart of the Steal is a standalone romance with a happy ending. It features a Southern gentleman who thinks he’s always right, a buttoned-up FBI agent who secretly likes his buttons unbuttoned, and wall sex. And desk sex. And picnic blanket sex.

Sarah says: Grumpy FBI art crime investigator, and wealthy former thief hook up. Art crimes and sexxytimes! (That would make a good series name, right?)

  • Meddling Kids

    Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero

    Author: Edgar Cantero
Released: July 11, 2017 by Doubleday
    Genre: ,

For fans of John Dies at the End and Welcome to Night Vale comes a tour de force of horror, humor, and H.P. Lovecraft. The surviving members of a forgotten teenage detective club (and their dog) must reunite as broken adults to finally solve the terrifying case that ruined them all…and sent the wrong man to prison. Scooby Doo and the gang never had to do this!

1990. The teen detectives once known as the Blyton Summer Detective Club (of Blyton Hills, a small mining town in the Zoinx River Valley in Oregon) are all grown up and haven’t seen each other since their fateful, final case in 1977. Andy, the tomboy, is twenty-five and on the run, wanted in at least two states. Keri, one-time kid genius and budding biologist, is bartending in New York, working on a serious drinking problem. At least she’s got Sean, an excitable Weimeraner descended from the original canine member of the team. Nate, the horror nerd, has spent the last thirteen years in and out of mental health institutions, and currently resides in an asylum in Arhkam, Massachusetts. The only friend he still sees is Peter, the handsome jock turned movie star. The problem is, Peter’s been dead for years.

The time has come to uncover the source of their nightmares and return to where it all began in 1977. This time, it better not be a man in a mask. The real monsters are waiting.

With raucous humor and brilliantly orchestrated mayhem, Edgar Cantero’s Meddling Kids taps into our shared nostalgia for the books and cartoons we grew up with, and delivers an exuberant, eclectic, and highly entertaining celebration of horror, life, friendship, and many-tentacled, interdimensional demon spawn.

Amanda says: A tongue in cheek satire of the Scooby Gang, plus I heard the cover glows under a black light. This looks like all sorts of fun.

  • Royally Romanov

    Royally Romanov by Teri Wilson

    Author: Teri Wilson
Released: July 17, 2017 by Pocket Books
    Genre: ,
    Series: The Royals #2

In this charming modern day retelling of the 1956 classic Anastasia, a museum curator falls for a mysterious man who may or may not be a long lost heir to Russia’s imperial Romanov dynasty.

Finley Abbot is organizing the most prestigious art exhibit of her career at the Louvre museum—a retrospective of art from the House of Romanov. But the sudden appearance of Maxim Romanov threatens to turn her into the biggest laughingstock of the art world. When she finds herself falling in love, she realizes there’s even more at stake than her career. How can she trust a man with her whole world when he can’t remember a thing about his past?

After suffering a violent blow to the head, Maxim’s only clue to his identity is a notebook containing carefully researched documentation in his own handwriting indicating that he is the sole surviving descendant of the Grand Duchess Anastasia, previously thought dead in the murder of her family during Russia’s Bolshevik revolution. His struggle to put the mysterious pieces of his past back together leads him to Finley. At first, she’s convinced Maxim is nothing but a con artist. But there’s something undeniably captivating about the beautiful, brooding man who claims to be searching for his identity—something Finley can’t quite bring herself to resist. When he reveals a secret about one of the imperial Fabergé eggs in the collection, she accepts he may actually be telling the truth. But as soon as Finley and Maxim act on their feelings for one another, Maxim is confronted with evidence that calls into question everything he’s begun to believe about himself.

Amanda says: A gender-flipped version of the Anastasia myth.

Connor “Mad” Rogan is in many ways her equal when it comes to magic, but she’s completely out of her elements when it comes to her feelings for him. To make matters more complicated, an old flame comes back into Rogan’s life…

Rogan knows there’s nothing between him and his ex-fiance, Rynda Sherwood. But as Nevada begins to learn more about her past, her power, and her potential future, he knows she will be faced with choices she never dreamed of and the promise of a life spent without him.

As Nevada and Rogan race to discover the whereabouts of Rynda’s kidnapped husband and are forced to confront Nevada’s grandmother, who may or may not have evil motives, these two people must decide if they can trust in each other or allow everything to go up in smoke.

Amanda says: I’m screaming. Please don’t let this be the last book in this world! Can we pretty please get a spin-off with Nevada’s sisters?

A lot of these sound good… but I really only care about Andrews’ Wildfire. It took so long for White Hot to be released though I was ecstatic that Avon decided to release all three within four months. But it’s been such a long four months.

  2. MirandaB says:

Wildfire will be an immediate buy, but Final Girls looks pretty good too 🙂

    Other July books with potential:

    Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine
An Oath of Dogs by Wendy Wagner
    Bannerless by Carrie Vaughn
    Strange Practice by Vivian Shaw

  3. Heather S says:

I am thrilled for “Ash and Quill”, the third book in Rachel Caine’s Great Library trilogy, which comes out 11 July.

Also totally stoked for “The Ruin of a Rake” by Cat Sebastian, who publishes m/m romance with Avon Impulse. (Psssst… the first two books, “The Soldier’s Scoundrel” and “The Lawrence Browne Affair”, are $1.99 each right now!) It comes out 4 July, but I have had it on preorder since November. I LOVE Cat’s books.

  4. SusanK says:

I am so looking forward to Wildfire. I plan to do a reread of the entire series when it is released.

I got an ARC of Hate to Want You by Alisha Rai and loved it!

Heroine Worship by Sarah Kuhn releases this week. It’s the sequel to Heroine Complex. Can’t wait!

  5. Cristie says:

BLANK Knights Inc. gave me an excellent laugh very early this morning after a not so great night so thank you for that.

  6. @Amanda says:

    @Cristie: Whoops! Fixed! 😛

  7. Meagan M says:

I read A New Leash on Love, it was really good!

  8. cleo says:

Hah – I read the blurb for Heart of the Steal earlier today, before reading this post, and immediately thought it might be SB Sarah’s cat-nip. It might be mine too – I like Thomas Crowne Affair type romances but I’m not sure I can get past the title. I don’t really want to be reminded of The Art of the Deal by my escapist reading.

I love the title of Meddling Kids but I’ll have to wait for the reviews – I’m wimpy about horror.

  9. JenM says:

    Wildfire. That is all.

Okay, in addition to Wildfire, I’m also eagerly waiting for Spellbinder, the next book in Thea Harrison’s spinoff from her Elder Races series. The first book, Moonshadow was one of my favorites last year, with a strong, smart heroine who basically laughed at and then ignored the rather old-fashioned alpha hero every time he tried to hold her back and “protect” her.

  10. Darlynne says:

“Woulda got away with it …” The Scooby book reminds me how much I *love* LAND OF A MILLION DRUMS by Outkast, et al., one of the songs from the silly Scooby movie. “Me and Shaggy dressed in all black, strapped …” Good times.

  11. Cammy says:

I’ve scheduled PTO for 25th for Wildfire’s release. I did the same for White Hot and it was very relaxing.

  12. Kareni says:

I’m another who is looking forward to both Wildfire and the new Thea Harrison book. I’m also eager to read Joanna Bourne’s Beauty Like the Night which is due out on August 1.

  13. Molly says:

Good grief. My Amazon Wish List just doubled. Thanks, Bitches!

  14. Betsydub says:

Wait a minute – Alisha Rai AND the end-of-the-trilogy Jennifer Probst released on the SAME DAY? Just how much time will I – realistically – need to take off? Have to factor in a double shot of Angsty-Book-Hangover, so I’m thinking 3 days (at least).

  15. Betsydub says:

… and which one to read first? Or do I alternate the books by chapter? Anyone else in this boat? Feel free to counsel.

  16. MinaKelly says:

A romance with vaginismus? Colour me sold. Well, colour me waiting for it to be sold in the UK, anyway.

  17. Cassandra says:

I’ve cleared time at the end of the month for Wildfire and Beauty like the Night on Aug 1st.

Would you all at SBTB consider a doing a review of Wildfire? I’d really like this series to be better known. I’ve recced it to everyone I know and not a bad reaction yet!

  18. Cassandra says:

Just went to pre-order Falling and noticed that it releases at the end of the month too. Maybe I should just take the whole week off 🙂

  19. Aimee says:

Can’t wait for “Wildfire”! Already pre-ordered.
