The Witches: Salem, 1692
Author: Stacy Schiff
Released: October 27, 2015 by Little, Brown and Company
Genre: NonfictionThe Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Cleopatra, the #1 national bestseller, unpacks the mystery of the Salem Witch Trials.
It began in 1692, over an exceptionally raw Massachusetts winter, when a minister’s daughter began to scream and convulse. It ended less than a year later, but not before 19 men and women had been hanged and an elderly man crushed to death.
The panic spread quickly, involving the most educated men and prominent politicians in the colony. Neighbors accused neighbors, parents and children each other. Aside from suffrage, the Salem Witch Trials represent the only moment when women played the central role in American history. In curious ways, the trials would shape the future republic.
As psychologically thrilling as it is historically seminal, THE WITCHES is Stacy Schiff’s account of this fantastical story-the first great American mystery unveiled fully for the first time by one of our most acclaimed historians.
Elyse says: This actually comes out in late Oct, but whatever. Schiff writes compelling non-fiction and I can’t wait to see her take on the Salem Witch trials.

Released: October 27, 2015 by Avon
Genre: Historical: European, Romance
Series: The Wicked Quills of London #2Successful playwright Maggie Delamere has no interest in the flirtations of noblemen like Cameron, Viscount Marwood. She once paid dearly for a moment of weakness . . . and vows to rebuff the wildly persistent—and irritatingly handsome—scoundrel at every turn. But when pressure to deliver a new play hampers her creativity, an invitation to use his country estate as a writer’s retreat is too tempting to resist…
For years, Cam has admired Maggie’s brilliant work, and he can’t pass up the opportunity to discover if the beautiful, mysterious playwright is as passionate and clever as the words that flow from her quill. He’s never offered a lady his bed without being in it, but if it means loosening Maggie’s pen—and her inhibitions—he’ll do exactly that.
But soon Cam’s plans for seduction become a fight for Maggie’s heart. He’s more than the scandalous, carefree rake society believes him to be . . . and she’s the only woman who has ever noticed.
Carrie says: Her last book was one of my fav historicals and I can’t wait for her second historical and a peek at the theater life in Regency England.

But Paul comes with baggage. His ultra-conservative family wants him paired up with a woman, not a man with Logan’s rainbow connection. When their anti-LGBT crusade spills beyond managing Paul’s love life and threatens the holiday festival, Kyle and Paul must fight foreveryone’s happily ever after, including their own.
Sarah says: The first book in the series, Let It Snow, is .99 so I bought that too. I’m not ready for snow but I like Cullinan’s writing, especially the dialogue.

Bohemian Gospel
Author: Dana Chamblee Carpenter
Released: November 15, 2015 by Pegasus
Genre: Historical: Other, Science Fiction/FantasySet against the historical reign of the Golden and Iron King, Bohemian Gospel is the remarkable tale of a bold and unusual girl on a quest to uncover her past and define her destiny.
Thirteenth-century Bohemia is a dangerous place for a girl, especially one as odd as Mouse, born with unnatural senses and an uncanny intellect. Some call her a witch. Others call her an angel. Even Mouse doesn’t know who—or what—she is. But she means to find out.
When young King Ottakar shows up at the Abbey wounded by a traitor’s arrow, Mouse breaks church law to save him and then agrees to accompany him back to Prague as his personal healer. Caught in the undertow of court politics at the castle, Ottakar and Mouse find themselves drawn to each other as they work to uncover the threat against him and to unravel the mystery of her past. But when Mouse’s unusual gifts give rise to a violence and strength that surprise everyone—especially herself—she is forced to ask herself: Will she be prepared for the future that awaits her?
A heart-thumping, highly original tale in the vein of Elizabeth Kostova’sThe Historian, Bohemian Gospel heralds the arrival of a fresh new voice for historical fiction.
Amanda says: I used to eat historical fiction books up with a spoon and this sounds really awesome, especially with the touch of fantasy.

He promised Bruce that he would keep his fiery bride in the dark about the elite Highland Guard, but he could not predict the dire consequences his secret would have on his young marriage. Nor could he foresee how surrendering to temptation could cripple Bruce’s cause, forcing Eoin to blame his wife—and himself for trusting her.

I’ll be getting Tricky 22 by Janet Evanovich (I still like Stephanie Plum) and Crimson Shore by Preston/Child.
The Schiff looks interesting.
I think the Linda Howard is a re-issue – not her best, hero is a jerk & heroine is saintly misunderstood, but I still enjoyed it bc LINDA HOWARD.
Oh, this is a serious wallet month! So much good, especially Eva Leigh and the new Maiden Lane. I don’t know anything about Talent for Trickery or the author, but the description definitely pushes my ‘read-now’ buttons. And Bohemian Gospel also looks amazing– thanks so much for putting it on my radar!
Time to make some tea and start reading….
Oh lord, if you’re reading The Cutting Edge, lay in a supply of tissues and something you can safely throw against the wall. Many somethings you can safely throw against the wall! Contains old skool WTFery! It’s Linda Howard WTFery, but still…
I’m somewhat intrigued by Bohemian Gospel, especially if it releases in audio with an awesome narrator.
I’m going to ignore the existence of the La Nora until the whole trilogy is out. La la la la la! *ignores*
Two Julia Quinn Bridgerton books are $1.99 as Kindle Daily deal today
amzn.to/1RlYcKO

Ooooh…Winter Wonderland ….I’ve been waiting for Paul to get his!
Yah! One click and one Christmas present for rabidly Outlander obsessed BBF purchased. THANK YOU!! No, really, she talked me into an Outlander based vacation in North Carolina this summer. It’ll give her something to do in the car.
I’m #3 on the reserve list for La Nora as, unlike Ms Bookjunkie, I have an issue with immediate needs gratification. I’m so looking forward to The End Game because Kristen Callihan and an honest to goodness Offensive Lineman. Now there’s my catnip, Hopefully she’ll write one with a Defensive Tackle so I can picture the Danimal while reading.
Really intrigued by Bohemian Gospel so I’ll be clicking over to the GBPL momentarily. Although comparing it to The Historian isn’t a good recommendation. I recall yawning through most of it. Still, the novelty of a novel set in Bohemia? I’ll bite.
Luckily I will not be spending new money on the Linda Howard as I can walk over to the bookshelf a pull it down for a reread. It is all the rage worthy alpholeness that others have mention, and yet, yes, Linda Howard.
@Rachel: Alissa Johnson wrote one of my keeper shelf books called “An Unexpected Gentleman”. I loved it, and the cover is gorgeous – if you get a first printing paperback, the title is fuchsia metallic lettering. It has a house party and a heroine compromised by the hero kissing her in the garden in front of witnesses. Alissa has written Western historicals and British historicals, though never any with a spy before. This is something new for her. 🙂
A Talent For Trickery was a fun one. But that Linda Howard, sneaky re-releases ought to be against the law.
Damon Suede’s got a new one on the 20th, Pent Up. Not the promised companion to Hot Head, but instead it sounds kind of suspensey. I have hopes; he’s only written two other books, but they’ve both been good and unusual. This one is 100,000 words, and Suede is good at length; he digs deep and really develops the story.
Agree with the others that the Linda Howard is a reissue of one of her old books. As I recall, it wasn’t one of her best, either. The hero was even more of a jerk than many of her heros were back then.
Thanks for the update! Can we do a separate Thanksgiving/holiday release thread as well? Maybe with new releases as well as old faves and recommendations? I’ve fired up my Hallmark channel and I’d love to pick up some books as well for reading during the commercials 🙂
Does anyone have advice on whether you can enjoy Hoyt’s Maiden Lane series at random or if they need to be read in order?
Well if I wasn’t already planning to buy the game plan those dudes arms would have convinced me.
G.A. Aiken aka Shelly Laurenston has a new dragon kin coming out 11/24 titled “Feel the Burn”.
She also just rereleased “Dragon on Top” on 10/27. This was originally included in the anthology “Supernatural” issued in 2011.
Feel the Burn is really good, and if you liked Elina Shestakova of the Black Bear Riders of the Midnight Mountains of Despair in the Far Reaches of the Steppes of the Outerplains, you’ll love her sister Kachka.
@Emily I think you can read Maiden Lane series out of order. I started with #6 Duke of Midnight, loved it, then read #7, which came out the week after I read Duke of Midnight.
I them read #1 in the series, then #3. Now my plan is to read #2, #4 and #5 before going on to #8 and being on track.
Hahahaha! This makes me laugh when I read it. It’s insane.
Hot Head by Damon Seude was the first m/m I read, and I loved it. I am really looking forward to his latest as well as Joanna Wylde’s next in the Reaper’s MC series.
New Maiden Lane! Elzabeth Hoyt has been SO reliable for me – I’m excited. And Theresa Romain wrote “It Takes Two To Tangle”, which I think is really great, so whooo!
Nitpicky aside here, I wish that contemporary authors would dial back their fancy soap-opera names. “Beaux” for a lady? So many grouchy French grammar feels.
I’m curious about the football player with the beard (because… beards, to be honest) but I have such spotty success with contemporaries that I will lurk for reviews first.
I DESPISED The Cutting Edge. It’s worse than Loving Evangeline, and that’s saying a lot. And this comes from someone who harbors secret love for some of LH’s more problematic (cough) books. But I know some of y’all will still be tempted to see for yourselves. 🙂
Luckily for me, there are some other interesting books here. Bohemian Gospel looks good. Thanks for doing the list.
@Heather S. — Thanks for the info! There can never be enough metallic fuchsia. 🙂
@Emily– I started Maiden Lane with book #5. In all honesty, it took me a little while to get grounded in the setting/characters. Characters from previous books tended to pop up regularly, so I felt a little out to sea at first. That said, I got invested and caught up from context quickly enough. I’ve tried to read the rest of the books sequentially, but I think it’s certainly do-able to read out of order, as @Julia has. And I completely agree with Julia on Duke of Midnight– I could not put that one down!
@Emily
I think you can definitely read Duke of Midnight as a stand-alone, the characters are related to characters from other books, but I think it’s easily readable as a first entry into the series. Plus it’s really, really good. Such good prose, characterization, period-feeling dynamics and settings: the hero is a duke, the heroine is of gentle birth but poor and semi-disgraced because her brother is in Bedlam, she is the poor-relation companion to the woman the duke is courting, it’s full of angst but basically NO stupidity or Big Misunderstandings, it’s adults wrestling with the social realities of their times – just great.
Linda Howard might have a new novel coming out June 2016 – Troublemaker. (I don’t think that’s a rerelease…) This is very exciting! I admit that some of her older books have problematic bits, but every time I sit down with one (new or old) I get sucked right in. ^_^
Noooo, not more to add to the TBR pile!!!!!
I need to catch up with Maiden Lane – Asa intrigued me from his first mention. I’ve already got Scandal Takes the Stage on my Kindle but have to read some library books first, including a Theresa Romain! As a former horse-obsessed teen (who grew 1/2″ too tall to be a jockey) I will definitely be checking that out.
A Talent for Trickery might shoot to the top of the list though. Yay for lady-thieves and gentlemen-detectives! And I’ll have to bump up the Game On series based on that cover alone. Beards and tattoos? Unf.
I count seven of the above as too intriguing to pass up, which means serious readjustment to my financial priorities. It’s a good thing that ramen sells for a quarter at the walmart.
I think that new Courtney Milan book/series starter is finally out this month too.
I have just started the series recommended here by Tracy Solheim, so far I have read Game On and Foolish Game. The rest of the series is on my list to acquire.
I have preordered Heart Legacy by Robin D Owens coming out tomorrow. She is presently my go to comfort read. Love her mix of fantasy and romance which include sentient pets and houses.
Also will be getting Stars of Fortune by Nora Roberts.
Janet Evanovich is strictly a library read for me at this point, so I have the new one on hold.
Daniel’s True Desire by Grace Burrowes is also out tomorrow. The hero is a vicar and I’ve been waiting for his story since David: Lord of Honor. I pre-ordered The Sport of Baronets and expect I’ll be dragging my feet into my home office tomorrow morning. Theresa Romain is one of my auto-buy authors and like Redheadedgirl says, “HORSES.”
I read extensively about the Salem trials when I was a teenager so Salem has been added to my TBR folder. Mr. L bought and is currently reading Salem as his Halloween treat and likes it so far. He is appreciating all of the research but reminded me again this morning the book is non-fiction and he has not run across a Duke or cowboy yet.
A lot of good books calling my name (so many with other books in the series that also require reading)!
Other books to consider – Ilona Andrews has “Sweep in Peace” coming out the 13th. This is a follow-up to “Clean Sweep”, both of which started out on their blog.
And I’m showing that Marissa Meyer is finishing up (or not?) the Lunar Chronicles with “Winter” coming the 10th.
And finally, “Mind Magic – A Novel of the Lupi” by Eileen Wilks is out tomorrow!!!
Jennifer McQuiston has a new one out at the end of the month, so I’m looking forward to that. 🙂
