Movie Review: Captain America: Civil War

Marvel’s latest blockbuster, Captain America: Civil War is here and CarrieS, Redheadedgirl and I have thoughts. I also had three hard ciders and a rum and Coke so….

CA:CW is a movie about the consequences of all the other Marvel movies. While chasing down Hydra in Lagos, Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) misjudges her aim and accidentally blows a building up. People, including Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr), are concerned by the civilian casualties that occur when The Avengers are fighting aliens, secret Nazi organizations or giant robots. Accords are drawn up that will prevent The Avengers from going into battle without the okay of the UN–failure to comply means stepping down from the superhero stuff or potentially going to jail. Ideological lines are drawn in the sand, and questions were asked: can we have faith in our heroes to do their best and act in our best interest? When is oversight needed and when is it a dangerous path to being controlled? How many protein shakes were consumed in the filming of this movie?

Also Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) is back and Cap (Chris Evans) has to save him. And Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and Spiderman (Tom Holland) show up.

Be warned, the commentary below contains MASSIVE SPOILERS.

You ready? Proceed if you don’t mind spoilers or you’ve already seen it!

OK, here we go!

Elyse: HEY GUESS WHAT IM DRUNK AGAIN AND I STILL WANNA BANG SEBASTIAN STAN

RHG: In space?

Elyse: IN WHEREVER. But only if Cap is cool with it because he’s my one true love obvs.

CarrieS: May I just first of all say, Arden Marketplace Theater is THE WORST. I spent $11.75 to look at the back of a tall guy’s head because the theater didn’t properly slop or space the seats. Ugh.

The fact that I loved the movie and had a great time despite being in the shittiest theater in America speaks volumes. I thought the movie started off pretty slow but once it going it was wonderful – and I appreciated that it wasn’t three hours long.

Elyse: I haven’t been having a great month, so I truly appreciate the biceps porn that this movie provided. It was like Marvel was like “Here, Elyse, feel betters.”

Chris Evans as Cap trying to stop something and this shot is 90 percent biceps and arm muscle pron

CarrieS: There are so many stories being told right now in which all the characters are unlikeable (we might sympathize with them, but we don’t like them). So I thought it was fascinating to see what happens when almost every single character in the movie is intensely likable. It meant the conflicts were both incredibly fun (because we get to see what happens when these people fight each other and it’s crazysauce amazing) and anxiety producing (because we don’t actually want anyone to get hurt).

What I loved most about this movie is that every single thing that happens is intensely character driven and all the characters are people I care about (also, could someone get Wanda a therapist, please? Cause she has some issues.). That’s a breath of fresh air, especially since I just watched an early viewing of High Rise, a dystopian science fiction movie in which everyone is absolutely awful. It’s not a perfect movie – Marvel is still struggling with representation of women, the question of registration largely gets dropped in favor of everyone’s lost parent issues (I did respect the fact that both Tony and Cap are right and wrong at the same time), and there are moments when the CGI/models/stunt people are clearly in play. But in general it was well acted, the action was wonderfully directed, and the balance between angst and humor was perfect.

Frankly, I thought that with all these characters this movie would be an incoherent mess and yet somehow they balanced the characters so well that it didn’t feel overstuffed (at least, not very overstuffed). That’s amazing from a writing standpoint. Well played, there, Marvel, well played.

RHG: Do you agree that a mini series of, “The road trip and roommate adventures of Sam and Bucky” are a thing that needs to happen, like right the fuck now, Netflix get on that shit?

Carrie: I agree FERVENTLY with this, yes.

Sam and Bucky in press tour, with Sam saying, I mean, look, we're young, we're handsome....

Elyse: YESSSSSS. I really, really loved this movie except Sharon Carter was meh. But I don’t blame the actress because Peggy/Hayley Atwell is so amazing she’s impossible to live up to.

CarrieS: I’m fond of Sharon. But she needs more to do. Right now she’s just a replacement goldfish.

RHG: Yeah, but what she had to do here was competent, so she has that going for her. Just, you know, more. Also I expected the aftermath of the kiss to be “weird, like you’re my former girlfriend’s NIECE, so…” but then he’d had that information for three minutes, and we’ve had it since Winter Soldier, so I guess it wasn’t that weird.

I GUESS.

So the cry that went up when they announced that Cap3 was going to be Civil War was “BUT THAT STORYLINE IN THE COMICS WAS AWFUL” and there was concern that this would be similarly awful- contrived reasons to answer the question of “So who would win in a fight, Cap or Iron Man?” How do you guys think that went?

Elyse: IDK. I’m so sick of Tony being unable to handle his feels. This whole movie was Tony having an anxiety problem and Cap cleaning it up, IMO. But I’m team Cap all the way because mmmmmmm.

RHG: Yeah, like, Tony. You have issues. Perhaps you should try some therapy, since your whole “I’mma build shit and blow shit up” approach hasn’t worked out so well. Every time you try to work things out, more of the world gets craters in it, so…. Stop. Just stop.

Anyway, yes, I agree with how the battle lines were drawn. Vision would go with Tony because he’s Jarvis in God-Mode, and Rhodey stays with Tony because BFFs, and Spiderman goes with whoever asks, and at her heart, Black Widow likes having someone pointing her somewhere – it’s what she was trained to do. Sam is Cap’s BFF, and Scarlet Witch doesn’t want to be caged. AntMan, like Spidey, would go with whoever asked first, and Hawkeye ain’t fond of authority. It’s very simple. But the whole contrivance was just that- contrived.

Iron Man, Black Widow, and others running across the screen to go fight things

CarrieS: I think they’ve done a good job through the movies (and the TV shows) showing that this is an inevitable conflict, and I think they did a good job on linking the characters to the right sides for character-based reasons.

Tony and Cap did a lot of flip flopping to get there (Tony’s always been the rebel and Cap the government man and now they switch) but through the movies they’ve really built in solid reasons for that switch. And they are both right – I am all predisposed to agree with Cap because THOSE LIPS. THOSE ARMS. THOSE ARE GOOD ARMS and because we know that Tony is an emotional idiot. But they both have good points behind their arguments, which makes the conflict much more interesting.

In the comics there’s a huge thing about superheroes having to reveal their identities, which mercifully they dropped for the movie, since most of the characters don’t have a secret identity anyway.

Sam dropping down and landing, looking suspicious and ready to kick ass

Elyse: I really loved the fact that even When they were fighting they were pulling their punches. “OMG I thought that was a water truck!” So it wasn’t grimdark like Bats v Supes. Like you felt like these people still love each other a lot.

CarrieS: Yeah, and for me it made the fight fun (surely no one will get hurt because they don’t REALLY want to seriously hurt each other) and more intense (I love all these people! They are doing cool things! But I don’t want anyone to get seriously hurt!)

Falcon, Cap, Bucky, Scarlet Witch, and Hawkeye running toward whatever fight of fightingness

Elyse: I’m like on my 3rd hard cider.

CarrieS: So I’m thinking that Elyse’s hard-hitting commentary is “These people all are incredibly hot.” Which I for one can’t disagree with.

RHG: That’s classic Drunk!Elyse commentary.

Also I am 5009724987234097% certain that the shot of Cap playing Reverse Tug o War with the helicopter and a building (you know the one with the arms and the veins and the bulging) was put in JUST FOR ELYSE. Happy birthday to you.

I also am 5430734987430894% certain that the uncanny valley with Young!RDJ was put in just to make me make the ”wtf is happening right now” face. Which I did. For that whole scene and three after it.

CarrieS: I think that wraps it up for me. Can’t wait for Black Panther movie. So many great beats in this movie!

I’d give it an enthusiastic B+

Close up of Black Panther poised to kick ass

RHG: I think that the Russos and Renner have taken a significant amount of inspiration from Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye run, and I am HERE for it. Also kind of want a Vision cooking show.

The advantage this has over Ultron – and there are many, but I think this is the big one- is that while, like, everyone was in the movie (I assume that everyone reading this had a part, and I am the only person on the earth who wasn’t in it) they didn’t spend too much time on AntMan or Spidey or even Vision, so yeah, they used everyone the right amount.

(Did Martin Freeman just throw a tantrum that Benny is in a Marvel movie, so he should get to be in one as well? Is that why he was there?)

Elyse: Martin Freeman’s American accent was awful. A- for me just cuz I’m sick of the plot line “You killed my father! Prepare to die!” But omg biceps.

RHG: B+ because, Tony, you’ve had 5 previous movies about your feelings, and I nearly yelled out “ASK HIM IF HIS MOM’S NAME IS MARTHA” during the last punching.

Oh, important question: did you guys watch it in the 3D, and where the fighting and action scenes jumpy and weird for you, too? Roommates saw it in a completely different part of the theater, so the jumpiness wasn’t just a factor of location.

CarrieS: First of all, RHG I had the same reaction. Seriously it’s like Marvel and DC had a meeting and decided every super hero conflict this year would be about parental loss.

Secondly, I saw it in 2D behind a tall guy’s head. I thought the action was fine although you could tell that it relied on stunt doubles – frankly, I’d rather stunt people do stunts, because they know their shit. But it was pretty obvious at moments. Other than that, no issues for me.

Elyse: I saw it in 2D, but I’ve never been able to sit through a 3D movie without nausea. I’m nauseated now, but not so drunk that I’m confusing nauseated with nauseous. Also, BICEPS.

Captain America: Civil War is in theaters now and you can find tickets (US) at Fandango and Moviefone.

    Emily Olsen, or Elizabeth Olsen?

  2. Nikki P. says:

I think my favorite thing about the movie is how Spiderman seemed much more like an actual nerdy teenage kid than someone pushing thirty trying to pass as a high school student. I also am really amazed how they managed to take characters who are kind of lame in the comic book like Ant Man and Hawkeye and make them cool. The fight scene with gigantic Ant-Man might just be the most entertaining book fight sequence ever.

  3. I thought it was a really entertaining movie that raised some interesting questions. The airport fight scene was terrific.

I would have liked a little more focus on Steve/Bucky and less on Tony/Spider-Man. Some of the scenes felt like a setup for another Spider-Man movie, rather than belonging in a Cap movie. Also, Tony just never learns from his mistakes. He goes from zero to a hundred in trying to fix things, but he always makes them worse instead.

Overall, Civil War didn’t blow me away like Winter Soldier did (that’s my absolute favorite Marvel movie), but it was still a really good movie. The Cap movie trilogy is easily the best in the MCU, and I think Cap is one of the most layered/developed characters.

If anyone is interested, I posted my thoughts on the movie on my Facebook page (scroll down to Sunday’s post): https://www.facebook.com/JenniferEstepAuthor/

  4. Oh, and I agree. I would totally watch a Bucky/Sam/Steve road trip show. LOL. Loved the car scenes and the ones at the airport with Bucky/Sam.

  5. Lostshadows says:

I loved this. I’m glad it didn’t seem to have much in common with the comics, especially the ending.

The MCU is still clearly struggling with setting up romances. I think they did better with Cap/Sharon than Black Widow/Hulk, since we got some set up in CA2. Looks like they’re heading there with Vision/Scarlet Witch, who I hope get better than “and in Avengers 3 they’ll kiss”, because I’m fond of the pairing, but he’s a robot and we really haven’t seen enough of either of them for me to go “and she’ll totally be fine with that.”

I have many more thoughts, but my tablet just screamed at me about charging it.

  6. Amanda says:

@Sue: It’s Elizabeth. Fixed and thanks for pointing that out!

  7. KES says:

Yup. Biceps…….aaand I’m back in the room. So pleasant to watch.

Am I the only person who spends a lot of the time in the Cap films pondering whether Cap is actually a virgin?
Theory: He never consummated his relationship with Peggy, and he’s totally too honorable to shag around.

    Deffo virgin.

    AW!

  8. SB Sarah says:

I haven’t seen this one yet, but YES to all the car trips. I wanted a movie of Banner and Stark driving around, too, per the end of Avengers I. Can all of them just get in cars and mount cameras on the dash? Please? Boring Ass Road Trips with The Avengers! I’d watch the hell out of all of those!

  9. jimthered says:

A few thoughts (spoilers, but those were already covered above). I really enjoyed the movie (review up at http://thearmchaircritic.blogspot.com/2016/05/captain-america-civil-war.html ) My only issue was with the fact that the ending relied on an incredible amount of coincidence. Zemo (who wasn’t discussed above) somehow figures out how to get Cap and Bucky, and also Iron Man, to show up at the same remote wintery location at the exact same time, despite the fact that they were traveling separately, were fighting each other, and had no reason to wait around once they got there. Zemo also assumes Iron Man will believe the footage, even though Iron Man had learned hours before that the footage of Bucky causing a bombing was faked. I’d also think that there would be easier ways to get the three of them in the same room to show them a video than involving international bombings and activities over a few continents.

And it’s the old editor in me, but posters: It’s “Spider-Man,” not “Spiderman.” The former is his name, written that way in all the comics and movies; the latter sounds like a lawyer. (Been in an accident? Call Johnson, Spiderman and Lewis today!)

  10. Christine says:

I really loved the movie and thought they did an amazing job on the big airport fight scene and also giving everyone something to do that did advance the plot in some way. I thought it made total sense that Black Widow would turn sides, in fact (even though I get why she would be pro-accords because she doesn’t really trust herself and wants to be “officially sanctioned”)it was kind of surprising she didn’t trust Cap’s instincts from the beginning. The guy has been proven to be virtually a saint.
I am amazed at the people online who are 100% Tony. As entertaining as Ironman is I wouldn’t put that guy in charge of anything. 99% of the problems the Avengers have had can be traced back to him, another mad scientist or crazy governments. Every decision of Tony’s seemed to be be because of his bad mental state or a way to atone for the mistakes he makes over and over and over. “Pepper’s mad at me so we should all turn our sovereignty over to someone”.
I don’t see how any of the Avengers who had to deal with their former “governing” bodies that 1.) tried to nuke New York or 2.) was completely taken over by Hydra for decades and were launching “space ships” that were going to pick off innocent people “a few million at a time” would be like “Hey yeah! Let’s turn all our decision making over to some other committee!” It worked great in the past!”
I also don’t like how a lot of people are saying “Well Tony was right to try to kill Bucky because he killed his parents.” Um, Bucky was a decorated soldier who fought Nazis and was kidnapped, experimented on, tortured and frozen for 80 years and made to do horrific things against his will. If Black Panther can be mature enough to let the man who DELIBERATELY murdered his father just as collateral damage in his plan face justice, can’t Tony man up a bit? I mean is everyone mad at Clint for what happened when Loki brainwashed him? Everything only seems to matter when it happens to Tony and that’s getting old for me.
I found it really hard to even see Tony’s side at all because his arguments were so skewed. I saw it more as Black Widow and Vision’s side as they were the only ones pro-accord who had reasoned arguments.
It was interesting to me that of course Cap couldn’t sign if he knew he couldn’t keep his word but of course Tony signed knowing he would (and did) do whatever the hell he pleased anyway, breaking his vow almost immediately.
The movie left me with an even better impression of most of the Avengers and a worse one of Tony.

  11. TheoLibrarian says:

I agree overall with the interview. Great time, so many biceps, yes yes yes to the Sam and Bucky roadtrip movie (the “can you move your seat” line was my absolute favorite).

One of my big issues is the missed opportunity with Wanda’s character development. So many people around them are talking about the people they lost in Sokovia but Wanda, who is having all of the issues, never gets an opportunity to talk about the fact that she lost her brother in that same conflict. It bothered me that she never addressed the loss of her brother at all.

I was pleasantly surprised by the way in which T’Challa comes out as the real hero of the story. He was the one who was able to change his mind about something. He was the one who was able to look past vengeance for the greater good. He was the one who actually caught the bad guy. I am so excited for the Black Panther movie!

  12. >>CarrieS: I’m fond of Sharon. But she needs more to do. Right now she’s just a replacement goldfish.<<

Best line of the review! Love this.

Best scene of the film? Cap's biceps, 'natch.

The hubby and I saw it last night (he didn't appreciate AWESOME BICEPS SCENE as much as I did–go figure) and we liked the way people picked their sides, how Cap and Tony were talking about issues we all talk about, and young Spidey, who actually looked, talked and moved like a teenage boy. Hot Aunt May was also a nice touch.

Great review, and I'm really looking forward to the Black Panther movie. Now if we can only get them on board with a Black Widow movie, I'll be a happy girl.

  13. Douglas says:

There’s even a comic book precedent for Steve, Bucky and Sam going on a long road trip. When Steve gave up his identity in the Eighties and became “The Captain” (whose costume later got passed to replacement Cap USAgent), he roamed the country with Falcon, Nomad, and Nomad’s random genetically altered girlfriend. Swap in Bucky for Nomad and cast someone slightly too creepy to be Captain America and you can do a great adapatation.

  14. Crystal says:

I saw it on Mother’s Day, because I like gifting myself with Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan.

I liked it a great deal. I thought the fact that Spider-Man and Ant-Man were both acting like huge fanboys was lovely (“I’m shaking your hand too long, aren’t I?”). I’m willing to suspend judgement on Sharon, because I actually like Emily VanCamp from Revenge, and also Hayley Atwell is a gift from God, and it’s not Emily’s fault that no one can live up to her. I did like when Steve got the kiss, and he looks back and, well, I imagine that there is a GIF somewhere that says “BUCKY AND SAM APPROVE”. The looks on their faces were priceless. The airport fight was just SO well done. Everyone got their moment of effing stuff up, and it was glorious.

One thing I did have a bit of difficulty with, and it was Vision being set as Wanda’s jailer. I imagine that Tony’s reasoning (which is always SO sound) was that he was probably the only one that had a snowball’s chance in hell of slowing her down. However, it was pretty clear that Vision had already developed a serious crush on her, and it turned a dynamic that should have been sweet and shy into creepy. I don’t necessarily blame Vision, since he doesn’t really know how to person (points for being Paul Bettany in a sweater though), but Tony should know better. But then, he should also know better than to try to hold beginner goddesses hostage too. Tony’s biggest problem is he doesn’t know how to person most days either and he’s had a lot more time to figure it out than Vision has.

  15. chacha1 says:

I would totally watch Avengers road trips. Haven’t seen this one yet and CAN’T WAIT.

Iron Man/Tony Stark should be headed for a serious mental breakdown, just based on the tsunami of very personal shit he’s been surfing. If they want to treat “consequences” in a serious way (one that I think would really resonate with the fanworld), they will look at that (“they” being, of course, Marvel). RDJ could totally go there. All these people are fine actors for their parts, but he is in another league, IMO.

    Anthony Mackie is SO BEAUTIFUL.

    Biceps: yum.

And Bucky’s running biomechanics look really, really strange.

    That is all.

  16. Maz says:

I, like lots of people, was utterly happy with the fact that the Russos and co. decided to do away with the comic book canon storyline. The way they worked so many characters while moving the overall story forward is deffo worthy of a slow-clap-to-standing-ovation, imho.

I’m so sick of Tony being unable to handle his feels.

Yuup. I have to say that this didn’t quite feel like a Cap movie. Especially because one of the main themes was guys’ reactions to losing their parents potentially due to Avengers-related stuff. Zemo’s way was kinda ‘meh’ for me because it echoed Wanda and Pietro’s reasons for siding with Ultron throughout much of AoU. Tony was a mess (that then created dangerous messes). My bae T’Challa was the one out of the three who actively chose to focus his energy on something other than revenge. (As if I needed yet one more reason to heart-eye him).

FTR, I too walked in Team Cap and remain so to this day.

Things I’d have liked a bit more of: Sam and Bucky snarking at each other, more moments of Steve and Bucky reconnecting, a scene in which Natasha let us know why exactly did she side with Tony, more T’Challa.

It was a B+ movie for me as well. 🙂

  17. Julversia says:

I cannot wait to see this over the weekend. We never go opening week to anything (Hobbit movies excluded for Armitage reasons), but we’ve really been looking forward to this one. I’m glad to hear it’s living up to expectations. Cap has always been my favorite in the MCU (possibly for Armitage reasons again. Initially, anyway.), and I already know I’m Team Cap. Tony just wears on me after a while with all the snark about all the things.

I’d totally watch Avengers road trip dashcam movies. Or the Bucky/Steve/Sam show. Absolutely on board.

That Black Widow is going to get her own movie is looking better and better, and no offense to anyone, I hope she gets hers before any other “newer” character gets one.

Tom Holland, the new Spider Man, is only twenty, so good on them for more age-appropriate casting.

  18. carolinareader says:

I haven’t seen it but if it was was just 2+ hours of Steve/Bucky I would be happy.

  19. rayvyn2k says:

I love this movie and can’t wait to see it again. Amen to loving all the biceps and pretty men (and women).

    That motorcycle stunt, tho.

@TheoLibrarian: I completely agree about Wanda not saying anything about mourning her brother. A line here or there would have made a huge difference. They could have thrown in: “Pietro used to cook for me too–and as well”, or something like that.

Vision being set as Wanda’s “jailer”, was not so weird if you know that in the comics, they marry and she conceives twins (magically).

I loved the scene in the VW also “can you move the seat up?” “no” hee.

Cap and Agent 13 also have a relationship in the comics, so…yeah, not really weird there, either (for me). I was glad that they finally kissed. 🙂

And Cap is totally a virgin. 😉

I have more sympathy for Tony than some of you. Granted, he’s wrong about the registration, but I understand why he takes that side. He has taken on the guilt of everything–the destruction of NY, Coulson’s death, Happy’s death, his failed relationship with his parents and with Pepper…yeah, he’s a mess and needs some serious therapy. As a fellow mental mess, I empathize with him wanting someone else to make those big decisions for him. I also understand why he completely loses it when he finds out that the Winter Soldier killed his parents. He has just watched his best friend (Rhodey) fall from the sky and I’m sure he has taken on the guilt of THAT as well. So, Tony’s not rational in that moment and striking out at Bucky is a completely logical reaction, in my opinion.

And RDJ is simply wonderful in the part…I got all the feels just watching him go through everything in this movie.

Spider-Man and Ant-Man were perfect, as was Black Panther. I’m so happy about Spider-Man in particular. Finally, a movie studio got him right. And I hope that, if the rumor is true and RDJ plays Tony in the S-M movie, guiding Peter helps to heal Tony some.

Ditto on everyone looking forward to the Black Panther movie. Chadwick Boseman is wonderful in the part.

  20. Shaheen says:

Hmmm. I’m feeling distinctly out of step here. Firstly, no. No Bucky road trip. I don’t get the Bucky love. Now Cap and Sam, yes.
Secondly, I was not Team Cap. I’m not sure I was Team Stark either, but I did like the idea of the Avengers being accountable to someone other than themselves, and their own (occasionally faulty) logic.
I loved the movie. The biceps were beautiful (even though I giggled helplessly at that point because my disbelief could not suspend as far as Cap did). I did think Sharon should have been wondering if she was getting kissed for her own sake or for her aunt’s.

  21. Lostshadows says:

@Crystal:”Tony should know better” seems to be a major reoccurring theme.

  22. genie says:

Loved the movie, and for full disclosure will admit to being solidly Team Cap (well, Team Bucky), and yeah, I thought Spidey was hilarious and all that, but am I the only person bothered by the fact that Tony Stark thinks it’s just fine to bring a HIGH SCHOOL KID to a superhero battle?

  23. ChatEbooks says:

It was a B+ for me as well. I loved the inclusion of Spiderman, Antman and Black Panther in the mix. Although, I would have loved Steve and Bucky getting more attention than Stark and Spiderman. But overall, a great movie.

  24. garlicknitter says:

So I realize this is days later, but I was avoiding spoilers, and thus reviews, until I got to see this, which I did last night.

Loved it a LOT. For many of the reasons stated above. Might see it again while it’s still in theaters, which is pretty big for me.

For those who want more Steve and Bucky and/or Sam and Bucky hanging out, I have been reading a fanfic lately that is really great (if you’re into fanfic at all). It’s the Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail by owlet in Archive of Our Own: http://archiveofourown.org/series/195689

If you don’t like slash fic, the first three parts of this are primarily about Bucky recovering from having been the Winter Soldier, trying to get past his massive PTSD, and trying to live a good human life, which Sam helps him with some (and of course Steve too, but sometimes Steve is part of the problem, not the solution). There is no romance in the first three parts (Bucky’s not ready for it), but they are lovely. Owlet’s writing goes from funny to touching to harrowing and back to funny with amazing balance. It’s some of the best writing I’ve ever encountered anywhere. WARNING: The third part of the series is still ongoing. If you start reading this and you get sucked in and you have to wait like the rest of us for new chapters…well, I warned you. But I’m telling you it’s worth it.

If you DO like slash fic, the last two parts do get to a more physically intimate relationship between Steve and Bucky. The series works whether you read this part or not, so it’s up to you.

Sorry about sort of hijacking the comments, but I think this particular fic is all kinds of wonderful and want people to read it because I think it will make them happier, and it is mostly topical, although the Bucky in this fic is not precisely the same as the Bucky in the movie.

  25. I’m coming late to this post, but wanted to come over and chime in that I just finally saw Civil War last night. I am ON BOARD with Elyse about the biceps because DEAR SWEET GODS THOSE ARMS. 😀

For the interested, the review I just put up is over here! I’ve linked back to this one, too:

    http://www.angelahighland.com/2016/05/15/movie-review-captain-america-civil-war/

  26. excessivelyperky says:

First of all, the Smurfette-ness is strong in this one, but alas that’s been true of all the Avengers movies and nearly all of the Marvel ones (thank God for the new Ghostbusters!).

And is that a Kaypro in Peter Parker’s bedroom? I bet it still uses the 5 1/4 floppy disks, too.

Can’t argue with the biceps, but I *really* want that flying suit the Falcon has. Badly.
