  • In the Labyrinth of Drakes

In the Labyrinth of Drakes by Marie Brennan

    Author: Marie Brennan
Released: April 5, 2016 by Tor Books
    Genre:
Series: Memoir by Lady Trent #4

The thrilling new book in the acclaimed fantasy series from Marie Brennan, as the glamorous Lady Trent takes her adventurous explorations to the deserts of Akhia.

Even those who take no interest in the field of dragon naturalism have heard of Lady Trent’s expedition to the inhospitable deserts of Akhia. Her discoveries there are the stuff of romantic legend, catapulting her from scholarly obscurity to worldwide fame. The details of her personal life during that time are hardly less private, having provided fodder for gossips in several countries.

As is so often the case in the career of this illustrious woman, the public story is far from complete. In this, the fourth volume of her memoirs, Lady Trent relates how she acquired her position with the Royal Scirling Army; how foreign saboteurs imperiled both her work and her well-being; and how her determined pursuit of knowledge took her into the deepest reaches of the Labyrinth of Drakes, where the chance action of a dragon set the stage for her greatest achievement yet.

Carrie says: I’m crazy about this series in which a woman in a society analogous to Victorian England studies dragons all over the world.

  • A Fierce and Subtle Poison

A Fierce and Subtle Poison by Samantha Mabry

    Author: Samantha Mabry
Released: April 12, 2016 by Algonquin Young Readers
    Genre: , ,

In this stunning debut, legends collide with reality when a boy is swept into the magical, dangerous world of a girl filled with poison.

Everyone knows the legends about the cursed girl–Isabel, the one the senoras whisper about. They say she has green skin and grass for hair, and she feeds on the poisonous plants that fill her family’s Caribbean island garden. Some say she can grant wishes; some say her touch can kill.

Seventeen-year-old Lucas lives on the mainland most of the year but spends summers with his hotel-developer father in Puerto Rico. He’s grown up hearing stories about the cursed girl, and he wants to believe in Isabel and her magic. When letters from Isabel begin mysteriously appearing in his room the same day his new girlfriend disappears, Lucas turns to Isabel for answers–and finds himself lured into her strange and enchanted world. But time is running out for the girl filled with poison, and the more entangled Lucas becomes with Isabel, the less certain he is of escaping with his own life.

A Fierce and Subtle Poison beautifully blends magical realism with a page-turning mystery and a dark,  starcrossed romance–all delivered in lush, urgent prose.

Sarah says: The heroine might be poisonous, and it’s set in Puerto Rico based on folklore and legend. I’m very curious!

  • Hamilton: The Revolution

Hamilton: The Revolution by Lin-Manuel Miranda

    Author: Lin-Manuel Miranda
Released: April 12, 2016 by Grand Central Publishing
    Genre:

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s groundbreaking musical Hamilton is as revolutionary as its subject, the poor kid from the Caribbean who fought the British, defended the Constitution, and helped to found the United States. Fusing hip-hop, pop, R&B, and the best traditions of theater, this once-in-a-generation show broadens the sound of Broadway, reveals the storytelling power of rap, and claims our country’s origins for a diverse new generation.

HAMILTON: THE REVOLUTION gives readers an unprecedented view of both revolutions, from the only two writers able to provide it. Miranda, along with Jeremy McCarter, a cultural critic and theater artist who was involved in the project from its earliest stages–“since before this was even a show,” according to Miranda–traces its development from an improbable performance at the White House to its landmark opening night on Broadway six years later. In addition, Miranda has written more than 200 funny, revealing footnotes for his award-winning libretto, the full text of which is published here.

Their account features photos by the renowned Frank Ockenfels and veteran Broadway photographer, Joan Marcus; exclusive looks at notebooks and emails; interviews with Questlove, Stephen Sondheim, leading political commentators, and more than 50 people involved with the production; and multiple appearances by President Obama himself. The book does more than tell the surprising story of how a Broadway musical became a national phenomenon: It demonstrates that America has always been renewed by the brash upstarts and brilliant outsiders, the men and women who don’t throw away their shot.

Redheadedgirl says: The making of Hamilton as told by the guy who made it. I’m so sad this is arriving to my house while I’m at RT.

  • Listen to Me

Listen to Me by Kristen Proby

    Author: Kristen Proby
Released: April 12, 2016 by William Morrow Paperbacks
    Genre: ,
    Series: Fusion #1

In New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kristen Proby’s brand new series, five best friends open a hot new restaurant, but one of them gets much more than she bargained for when a sexy former rock star walks through the doors—and into her heart.

Seduction is quickly becoming the hottest new restaurant in Portland, and Addison Wade is proud to claim 1/5 of the credit. She’s determined to make it a success and can’t think of a better way to bring in new customers than live music. But when former rock star Jake Keller swaggers through the doors to apply for the weekend gig, she knows she’s in trouble. Addie instantly recognizes him—his posters were plastered all over her bedroom walls in high school—he’s all bad boy…exactly her type and exactly what she doesn’t need.

Jake Keller walked away from the limelight five years ago and yearns to return to what’s always driven him: the music. If he gets to work for a smart-mouthed, funny-as-hell bombshell, all the better. But talking Addie into giving him the job is far easier than persuading her that he wants more than a romp in her bed. Just when she begins to drop her walls, Jake’s past finally catches up with him.

Will Addie be torn apart once again or will Jake be able to convince her to drown out her doubts and listen to her heart?

Amanda says: I’m not usually big on rockstar heroes, but a restauranteur heroine is just enough to tempt me.

Sarah says: I’m with Amanda – I don’t usually go for rock stars, but women competently running businesses in romance are very appealing! I love competent heroines.

  • Scarlett Epstein Hates It Here

Scarlett Epstein Hates It Here by Anna Breslaw

    Author: Anna Breslaw
Released: April 19, 2016 by Razorbill
    Genre:

If Amy Schumer and Rainbow Rowell had a baby, she’d be Anna Breslaw. Scarlett Epstein Hates It Here is a witty, hilarious, heartwarming novel that’s perfect for fans of David Arnold’sMosquitoland and Maria Semple’s Where’d You Go, Bernadette?

Meet Scarlett Epstein, BNF (Big Name Fan) in her online community of fanfiction writers, world-class nobody at Melville High. Her best (read: only) IRL friends are Avery, a painfully shy and annoyingly attractive bookworm, and Ruth, her pot-smoking, possibly insane seventy-three-year-old neighbor.

When Scarlett’s beloved TV show is canceled and her longtime crush, Gideon, is sucked out of her orbit and into the dark and distant world of Populars, Scarlett turns to the fanfic message boards for comfort. This time, though, her subjects aren’t the swoon-worthy stars of her fave series—they’re the real-life kids from her high school. Scarlett never considers what might happen if they were to find out what she truly thinks about them…until a dramatic series of events exposes a very different reality than Scarlett’s stories, forever transforming her approach to relationships—both online and off.

Sarah says: I’m going to be busy on the 12th. The early reviews promise sarcasm, humor, and a heroine who is figuring out the balance between online life and real world life. I’m in.

Sarah knows discovery would lead to her ruin, but marriage—to a vicar, no less—could help protect her from slander. An especially tempting option when the clergyman in question is the handsome, intriguing Jeremy Cleland.

Tasked with unmasking London’s most scandalous author by his powerful family, Jeremy has no idea that his beautiful, innocent bride is the very woman he seeks to destroy. His mission must remain a secret, even from the new wife who stirs his deepest longings. Yet when the truth comes to light, Sarah and Jeremy’s newfound love will be tested. Will Sarah’s secret identity tear them apart or will the temptations of his wallflower wife prove too wicked to resist?

Elyse says: The story of a wallflower who writes erotic fiction…OMG yes, please.

  • The Earl Takes All

The Earl Takes All by Lorraine Heath

    Author: Lorraine Heath
Released: April 26, 2016 by Avon
    Genre: ,
Series: The Hellions of Havisham #2

One summer night, Edward Alcott gives in to temptation and kisses Lady Julia Kenney in a dark garden. However, the passion she stirs within him is best left in the shadows as she weds his twin, the Earl of Greyling. But when tragedy strikes, to honor the vow he makes to his dying brother, Edward must pretend to be Greyling until the countess delivers her babe.

After her husband returns from a two-month sojourn, Julia finds him changed. Bolder, more daring, and more wicked—even if he does limit their encounters to kisses. With each passing day, she falls more deeply in love.

For Edward the embers of desire sparked on that long-ago night are quickly rekindled. He yearns to be her husband in truth. But if she discovers his ruse, she will despise him—and English law prevents him from marrying his brother’s widow. Yet he must dare to risk everything and reveal his secrets if he is to truly take all.

Sarah says: The plot summary lines up a bunch of serious obstacles to the happy ending, so I’m very curious how it’ll be pulled off.

  • The Star-Touched Queen

The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi

    Author: Roshani Chokshi
Released: April 26, 2016 by St. Martin's Griffin
    Genre: ,
    Series: Star-Touched #1

Cursed with a horoscope that promises a marriage of Death and Destruction, sixteen-year-old Maya has only earned the scorn and fear of her father’s kingdom. Content to follow more scholarly pursuits, her world is upheaved when her father, the Raja, arranges a wedding of political convenience to quell outside rebellions. But when her wedding takes a fatal turn, Maya becomes the queen of Akaran and wife of Amar. Yet neither roles are what she expected. As Akaran’s queen, she finds her voice and power. As Amar’s wife, she finds friendship and warmth.

But Akaran has its own secrets – thousands of locked doors, gardens of glass, and a tree that bears memories instead of fruit. Beneath Akaran’s magic, Maya begins to suspect her life is in danger. When she ignores Amar’s plea for patience, her discoveries put more than new love at risk – it threatens the balance of all realms, human and Otherworldly.

Now, Maya must confront a secret that spans reincarnated lives and fight her way through the dangerous underbelly of the Otherworld if she wants to protect the people she loves.

THE STAR TOUCHED QUEEN is a lush, beautifully written and vividly imagined fantasy inspired by Indian mythology.

Sarah says: A horoscope causes a young princess to be outcast when her future is predicted as a “marriage of death and destruction.” Then Maya ends up as the queen of another kingdom and of course, someone is trying to kill her and I so want to read this.

  • Heated Rivals

    Heated Rivals by Katee Robert

    Author: Katee Robert
Released: April 26, 2016 by Forever
    Genre: ,
    Series: The O'Malleys #2

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Katee Robert continues her smoking-hot series about the O’Malleys—wealthy, powerful, and full of scandalous family secrets.

Carrigan O’Malley has always known her arranged marriage would be more about power and prestige than passion. But after one taste of the hard-bodied, whiskey-voiced James Halloran, she’s ruined for anyone else. Too bad James and his family are enemy number 1.

Hallorans vs. O’Malleys—that’s how it’s always been. James should be thinking more about how to expand his family’s empire instead of how silky Carrigan’s skin is against his and how he can next get her into his bed. Those are dangerous thoughts. But not nearly as dangerous as he’ll be if he can’t get what he wants: Carrigan by his side for the rest of their lives.

Amanda says: Elyse’s review of The Marriage Contract really got me interested in the series and the second book seems to be a Hatfield & McCoy type situation.

Elyse says: I enjoyed the first book in this series.

  1. Kate says:

There is a new Simone St. James out on the 5th, “Lost Among the Living”!

I could not be more excited. I actually preordered it. If I was not in bed right now, I would be on the edge of my seat!

  2. MirandaB says:

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire. What happens to the kids who are taken to magical realms after they come back to earth? McGuire had me for this book when she defended Susan Pevensie from the Narnia books. Even when I was 11, I HATED what happened to Susan!!!

  3. Amanda says:

@MirandaB: Oh my god, that sounds awesome! Adding it to my TBR now!

  4. Hera says:

The final book in Maggie Stiefvater’s Raven Cycle comes out April 26th. If you haven’t read it, I recommend it highly. It’s sort of a cross between the Dead Poet’s Society and Susan Cooper’s Dark is Rising series, but it’s also a lot more.

  5. LauraL says:

I added Hold Your Breath to my wish list a couple of weeks ago. I like a little romantic suspense in between the historical and this one caught my eye when I saw it promoted elsewhere. I read Tycoon, the Knickbocker Club prequel, and will definitely be reading Magnate and the rest of the series. Not too many Gilded Age romances out there and Joanna Shupe is a fine storyteller. And I will so be reading The Earl Takes All! If anyone can get us around all those obstacles to a happy ending, it will be Lorraine Heath. Off the Hide Your Wallet list, I am also looking forward to Return of the Bad Boy by Jessica Lemmon.

  6. TheoLibrarian says:

Oh my goodness. I need Knit Tight in my life.

  7. Kay says:

Grace Draven’s new book Eidolon is supposed to come out in the next week or two 😀

  8. Cyranetta says:

I’m happy that Elizabeth Cadell’s novels are FINALLY being released for the Kindle.

  9. Lora says:

Havent read the book yet but A Fierce and Subtle Poison is one hell of a great title as far as I’m concerned.

  10. ClaireC says:

So excited for Magnate!!! Read Tycoon, the prequel, which included a sample of Magnate and it was so so good. I’ve got that on pre-order, along with Temptations of a Wallflower.

Have to finish up my March new books first! Which to start – new Caroline Linden, or new Theresa Romain?!?!

  11. roserita says:

“The Murder of Mary Russell” and “Lumberjanes 3” — both April 5th, and Karen Chance’s “Ride the storm” April 19th.

  12. Katie Lynn says:

I preordered Knit Tight a few days ago, the first three books in that series are around $5 total right now, and I blew through them in about a day. I find her writing to be very enjoyable.

  13. cleo says:

I’ll have to check out Knit Tight – I like the author. And tangent – I’ve noticed that LGBT knitting romances tend to have more sex and less cancer than m/f knitting romances (which I approve of).

  14. LML says:

@Cyranetta, I am as pleased as you. Thank you for your comment, as it has been years since I checked this author’s availability in e-book format. I hope low sales at the $8.00 price point don’t discourage the publisher from continuing to make more titles available.

  15. DonnaMarie says:

Luckily for my clicking finger, I already had a lot of these (la Nora & JAK especially) on my radar. I’m with @Kate. Really looking forward to the new Simone St. James. I also will be picking up what, please god, is the final installment of Sylvia Day’s Crossfire series One With You and -don’t judge me, I know I swore NEVER again, but it’s about Rhage!!- The Beast. I comfort myself with the belief that JR Ward can’t possibly do worse than the last BDB I read. And it’s Rhage, the one with the inner T-rex. Then again, I may be investing in some spackle.

In the not romance vein I’m looking forward to Rise Of The Rocket Girls: The Women Who Propelled Us, form Missiles to the Moon to Mars about the team of women “human computers” who worked for Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the 40’s and 50’s.

  16. Joanna says:

Kylie Scott’s romance about the drummer in a rock band, Play, was really sweet and made me laugh a lot so I think I will give Dirty a look.

  17. Jacqui says:

Ruthie Knox’s Madly, Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven King, Curtis Sittenfield’s Eligible (a modernised Pride and Prejudice), M R Carey’s Fellside (his most recent book, The girl with all the gifts, is a really, really good zombie book).

  18. cayenne says:

I’m still working my way through the stuff I got on Tuesday – such a massive day for historicals, whee!! – but in addition to some of the ones listed above (Lorraine Heath, Eva Leigh, Devil’s Doorbell, La Nora), there are a few I’m looking forward to in April to hold me over until the new GGK comes out in May:

Laura Florand – Chase Me – April 5 (nobody call me that day, I’m not picking up)
Miranda Neville – Secrets of a Soprano – April 11
    Joey W. Hill – Naughty Wishes 4 – April 19
Maisey Yates – One Night Charmer – April 19

And hopefully my Glen Weldon hold will come in at the library soon *crossing fingers*

  19. Vasha says:

To try a taste of Roshani Chokshi, there’s her short story “The Vishakanya’s Choice”, about which the summary says: “Early in her life, Sudha’s fate was divined to be a lonely, fruitless future of young widowhood. So, it was considered a blessing when she was brought to the Hastinapur harem to become a vishakanya–a weapon, an assassin, a poison maiden whose very touch is toxic.” And then she’s given a mission to assassinate an Alexander-like conqueror.

  20. cleo says:

Not a new release, but I want to mention that Marie Sexton’s Promises (book 1 in the Coda series) is free at ARe today. It’s a lovely romance and a good intro to m/m romance, if you’re looking for one.

  21. Darlynne says:

@Cyranetta: Oh, my! It’s astonishing how often I think of Cadell’s books, nearly 45 years later. I have no idea if they will hold up, but what memories, especially CANARY YELLOW. Thanks!

  22. Katie says:

I read dirty as an arc and loved it.
What the blurb doesn’t mention is the bride is plus sized! Always a selling point for me.

  23. Ellen says:

Laura Florand’s next book CHase Me comes out on the 5th. I have preordered it and am v. excited. Her books always make cry (in a good way).

  24. […] releases: Fiction Vixen (romance), Dear Author (romance), Smart Bitches (romance), Gizmodo (fantasy & scifi), and Tor.com (fantasy, scifi, genre […]
