  • She Wore Red Trainers

She Wore Red Trainers by Na'ima Robert

She Wore Red Trainers: A Muslim Romance by Na’ima B. Robert is $1.99 at Amazon and iBooks right now. Thank you to Heather S. for the heads up about this deal.

This book is a contemporary YA romance and it has a 4.2-star average. Readers who enjoyed it said it was both emotional and fascinating; this one review made me laugh: “Beautiful. An extremely orthodox The Fault in Our Stars without death or cancer.

When Ali first meets Amirah, he notices everything about her—her hijab, her long eyelashes and her red trainers—in the time it takes to have one look, before lowering his gaze. And, although Ali is still coming to terms with the loss of his mother and exploring his identity as a Muslim, and although Amirah has sworn never to get married, they can’t stop thinking about each other. Can Ali and Amirah ever have a halal “happily ever after”?

  • Ready Player One

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Ready, Player One by Ernest Cline is $2.80 at Amazon and Google: Play, and $3.99 at the iBookstore. That’s kind of odd, but hey, it’s a discount. This is a much-recommended dystopian YA fantasy (Amanda recommends it particularly) and it has a 4.3-star average on Goodreads.

It’s the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place.

Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets.

And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune — and remarkable power — to whoever can unlock them.

For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday’s riddles are based in the pop culture he loved — that of the late twentieth century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday’s icons. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes’s oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig.

And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle.

Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt — among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize. Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to win. But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life — and love — in the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.

    A world at stake.
A quest for the ultimate prize.

  • Guilty Pleasures

Guilty Pleasures by Laura Lee Guhrke

Guilty Pleasures by Laura Lee Guhrke is $2.99 at Amazon and Google:Play, and $4.99 elsewhere. This is a historical romance, and the first in the Guilty series. It has a 3.9-star average, and features a plain heroine, Daphne, who is secretly in love with Anthony, the hero.

When his sister decides to give the capable, intelligent, and shy Daphne a makeover, Anthony doesn’t know what to do with himself. (But it’s a romance, so I trust he eventually figures something out, right? Right.)

One of Daphne Wade’s guilty pleasures is to watch the Duke of Tremore as he works, shirtless, on the excavation site of his ducal estate. Anthony Courtland is by far the most exciting and handsome man she has ever known, and she dreams of one day being able to speak with him without getting tongue tied.

Anthony, meanwhile, only sees Daphne as a hard worker on his excavation team. He considers her a plain young lady and says so in a careless remark to a friend, unaware that Daphne is outside the library door, her heart shattering to pieces. So Daphne decides she will not be so silly any longer. She begins to be tutored in the social graces, forcing Anthony to see the beauty who has been right in front of his eyes.

  • Looking for Trouble

Looking for Trouble by Victoria Dahl

Looking for Trouble by Victoria Dahl is $1.99, but I believe this sale may be ending sometime today. If the price has already changed, I’m sorry!

This is book 1 in the Girls’ Night Out series, which is set in Jackson Hole, WY. The heroine is a librarian living under the shadow her mother’s reputation, and the hero is a biker, and the son of the man her mother ran away with. So, a few family issues, really. This book has a 3.7-star average at GoodReads.

A good reason to be bad…

Librarian Sophie Heyer has walked the straight and narrow her entire life to make up for her mother’s mistakes. But in tiny Jackson Hole, Wyoming, juicy gossip doesn’t just fade away. Falling hard for the sexiest biker who’s ever ridden into town would undo everything she’s worked for. And to add insult to injury, the alluring stranger is none other than Alex Bishop–the son of the man Sophie’s mother abandoned her family for. He may be temptation on wheels, but Sophie’s not looking for trouble!

Maybe Sophie’s buttoned-up facade fools some, but Alex knows a naughty smile when he sees one. Despite their parents’ checkered pasts, he’s willing to take some risks to find out the truth about the town librarian. He figures a little fling might be just the ticket to get his mind off his own family drama. But what he finds underneath Sophie’s prim demeanor might change his world in ways he never expected.

Choosing You by Jenny Trout is free on Amazon! This is a wonderful NA novella (formerly published as “A Choice Fit for a Queen”) — I loved the wry first-person narration, and it’s sexy, and (as you’d expect from Trout a.k.a. Abigail Barnette) it’s outspokenly feminist.

For perpetual overachiever Madison Lane, a summer studying Arthurian mythology in the Welsh countryside with professor Thomas Evans is a dream come true, and the adventure of a lifetime.

Of course, the enormous crush Madison developed on the professor after a semester of his lectures at U of M has absolutely nothing to do with her desire to learn more about the enduring legend of Camelot. At least, that’s what she’s telling her parents.

When Madison meets local hottie Rhys Crewe, sparks fly, throwing her plans for a wild fling with Professor Evans completely out of whack—as do her unexpectedly complicated feelings for Thomas. With tales of Arthur and Lancelot haunting her every waking moment, Madison has to make the most difficult choice of her life.

Alluring Tales came up as $10.99 for me at iBooks 🙁

Ready Player One is a fantastic book – i highly recommend it, especially if you were a teen during the 80’s! so many ‘wow, I remember THAT’ moments 🙂

  4. Danielle says:

While not outright romance, The Size Of A Mustard Seed by Umm Juwayriyah is, I believe, another Islamic novel with romantic elements/American-Muslim inspie. The main character is a single Muslim woman in her twenties who works as a hairstylist in, IIRC, New York. It, too, gets great reviews. Need to pull it out of my TBR pile!

Ready Player One is an absolute must read. Totally soul satisfying to my 70’s vintage geekiness.
