Velvet Was the Night by Silvia Moreno Garcia is $1.99! This is a noir/mystery novel set in Mexico during the 1970s. I believe this was also a Hide Your Wallet pick and I remember being super excited. Also, what a cool damn cover.
A Devil of a Duke by Madeline Hunter is $1.99! This is the second book in the Decadent Dukes Society, but can be read on its own. Readers say this one has a great pace to the romance and action, but wish it had more emotional depth. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.
The Hamilton Affair by Elizabeth Cobbs is $2.99! This is a work of historical fiction that focuses on Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler’s relationship. Redheadedgirl mentioned that she’d read this one in a previous Whatcha Reading. She found it “good, but disjointed.”
Overall, I think this book contains a fabulous world with a terrific, galloping adventure through a vivid and wrenching underworld. While I was reading it, I had a hard time putting it down. But the story has most of its strength in the plot and the world-building than in the characters and their emotional development and consistency, and I missed those aspects even while I enjoyed the rest.
Along Came Love by Tracey Livesay is $1.99! This book just came out THIS MONTH! It was also featured in Hide Your Wallet. Livesay writes smart, competent characters, but some reviewers that the heroine was a bit too Manic Pixie Dream Girl for them. Anyone interested?
RECOMMENDED: Marrying Winterbourne by Lisa Kleypas is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched by iBooks. Barnes & Noble also has it on sale for $2.99! Elyse gave it a B- in a Lightning Review, saying it was good but not Kleypas-good:
Marrying Winterborne was a little bit of a disappointment because I expect SO MUCH from a Kleypas novel, but somehow also compulsively readable. It’s the direct sequel to Cold-Hearted Rake and best read after that book in order to provide context.
Summer is here! Well, depending on where you live, summer is here. And all I want to do is nap in the sun with an alcoholic beverage with a good book. My needs are very simple. But if an attractive man or woman wants to also feed me ripe fruit while I’m lazing about, I won’t say no. Our book this month is Paige Tyler’s To Love a Wolf, so head’s up to all of … Continue reading Covers & Cocktails Giveaway: Cooper’s Bite→
