Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman is 99c at Amazon for today only! I don’t love the new covers so I’m using the ones I like, but that’s neither here nor there. I’ve been listening to it and it’s very good on audio.
Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab is $2.99 and a KDD! This came out last summer and was a big release. If you’re still waiting on that library hold, maybe grab this one.
Tourist Season by Brynne Weaver is $4.99! This is book one in a new series and it came out last year. Weaver’s books are pretty popular, so I won’t be surprised if there are still lots of holds. I do love Weaver’s blend of dark humor and romance, but often find the pacing to be a bit lopsided in her romances.
Potent Pleasures by Eloisa James is $1.99! This was James’ debut historical romance. Many readers really seem to dislike the hero, while others said this was an emotional rollercoaster that left them a bit misty-eyed. During a previous sale, we asked what readers thought of the book and there’s some great conversation in the comments section to check out. Be warned there are spoilers though.
I have now read a grand total of two dark romances. The first was so utterly shit that I didn’t attempt the genre again for a few years. While it was a very popular book, it was not at all appealing, and afterward I wasn’t sure what were hallmarks of the genre and what was just bad writing. I see now how wrong I was. Tourist Season by Brynne Weaver is $1.99! This is book one in a new series. It came out last year and I mentioned it on Hide Your Wallet. I do love Weaver’s blend of dark humor and romance, but often find the pacing to be a bit lopsided in her romances. What do you think?
Butcher and Blackbird by Brynne Weaver is $1.49! This is book one in The Ruinous Love series. I read this one and these are my thoughts from my Goodreads review:
This one started off really promising. Unfortunately, the pacing started to falter about about a third of the way into it. The last quarter was suspenseful and I appreciated the twist, but yeah…the middle of the book felt mostly like filler. I also didn’t feel a ton of romantic progression between the leads.
One thing that really confounded me was that Sloane is described as being in her early twenties. She’s an accomplished serial killer and quotes Zoolander (which came out in 2001). Look, I love Zoolander as much as the next person, but it’s not exactly the Criterion Collection. It really took me out and had me wondering when exactly did this story take place.
Overall, I enjoyed the tone and dark humor. It’s a unique romance, but needed some refinement.
The Love of My Afterlife by Kirsty Greenwood is $1.99! Sarah had the author on the podcast and she picked it as her favorite read of 2024.
Happiness for Beginners by Katherine Center is $1.99! Center’s books have been mentioned and recommended on the site before. This is one of her earlier works and apparently has been made into a Netflix adaptation. Have you read or watched this one?
