Comments Off on Virgins in Romance: An Interview with Jodi McAlister
The Sunday after I arrived in Australia, Kat from BookThingo hosted a tea, and while I was hoovering scones and tea sandwiches, I met Jodi McAlister, who is doing her PhD thesis (or dissertation, as we call them in the US) on romance. Specifically on virgins in romance. I KNOW. Can you IMAGINE? Such a rare, hard to find subject (heh). So I asked her if she'd be willing to do an interview with me (poor … Continue reading Virgins in Romance: An Interview with Jodi McAlister→

I was loaned an XCOM MiFi unit for use in Australia, in exchange for a review. I know a lot of you travel for work or conferences, sometimes internationally, and we've all groused about the highway robbery that is hotel in-room internet in some locations. I knew the hotel WiFi where I was going to be in Sydney was rather expensive, and wanted to explore other options. After contacting XCOM, I was shipped a MiFi, … Continue reading Review: XCOM WiFi for International Travel→

From Elizabeth S. a flash mob in what I'm told might be a German airport. Man, if you tried to pull that off at Newark or JFK, I'm not sure if TSA would tackle the kettle drummer or ignore the whole thing. Link! I hope your weekend features confetti guns and wandering sopranos!

I stayed up way too late reading this book. It isn't action packed with swashbuckling mayhem, but the tension and emotional power builds so slowly that I didn't want to stop reading. I wish the ending had been stronger, but this is still one of my favorite historical series. It's all the best things of historical romance with witty dialogue and interesting characters, with the charm of small town settings that are so popular in … Continue reading A Notorious Countess Confesses by Julie Anne Long→
I went to Dymock's bookstore and took a zillion pictures of all the books in the romance section – which is separate from the paranormal romance section, interestingly enough – and of the sizes and prices of the books. When I got back to my hotel room, none of those pictures were on my camera. Where did they go? Is there some vortex that limits my ability to document the complete WTF that is Australian … Continue reading The Price of Books in Australia→
Kat from BookThingo organized a tea to welcome me to Australia, and I sat down with her afterward to talk more about reading, reviewing and romance readers in Australia. She also shared some authors and book titles she was most excited about, particularly Australian authors. Here are the books we talked about in the podcast: The three publishers Kat mentioned are: Destiny Romance (Penguin) Escape Publishing (Harlequin) – Momentum (Pan Macmillan) – – no … Continue reading 36. Lois McMaster Bujold is one of my favorite authors, so I'm grateful to commenters who told me that a new book in the Vorkosigan Saga is out as of today (it's been available as an eARC for a while). While Captain Vorpatril's Alliance lacks the emotional punch of some of Bujold's other works, it is a lovely science fiction romance featuring none other than Miles' cousin Ivan. If you've read anything else by Bujold, you'll … Continue reading Captain Vorpatril’s Alliance by Lois McMaster Bujold: A Guest Review by CarrieS→
This was an English (rhyming!) translation of a Moliere play, performed by the Bell Shakespeare Company at the Sydney Opera House. I was feeling predisposed to like this play because I was in the Sydney Opera House (COOL) and it was a perfect night to go out near the harbor. By the end, and in the days after seeing the play, I recognized it's flaws, but was so pleased to have experienced it, because I'm … Continue reading The School for Wives: Bell Shakespeare Production, Sydney, Australia→
