How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying
How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying by Django Wexler is $2.99! I mentioned this in Get Rec’d and Darlynne commented, warning of a cliffhanger but noting it was definitely worth it. If you picked up and enjoyed Long Live Evil, this may make a good read-alike.
Groundhog Day meets Deadpool in Django Wexler’s raunchy, hilarious, blood-splattered fantasy tale about a young woman who, tired of defending humanity from the Dark Lord, decides to become the Dark Lord herself.
“Takes the old saying ‘If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em,’ to the next level. A sarcastic, action-packed, intrigue-filled (mis)adventure. One of the funniest books I’ve read in a long time.”–Matt Dinniman, author of Dungeon Crawler Carl
Davi has done this all before. She’s tried to be the hero and take down the all-powerful Dark Lord. A hundred times she’s rallied humanity and made the final charge. But the time loop always gets her in the end. Sometimes she’s killed quickly. Sometimes it takes a while. But she’s been defeated every time.
This time? She’s done being the hero and done being stuck in this endless time loop. If the Dark Lord always wins, then maybe that’s who she needs to be. It’s Davi’s turn to play on the winning side.

The Imposition of Unnecessary Obstacles
The Imposition of Unnecessary Obstacles by Malka Older is $2.99! This is book two in the The Investigations of Mossa and Pleiti series, and book three is out this summer. Carrie reviewed the first book favorably on the site.
Investigator Mossa and Scholar Pleiti reunite to solve a brand-new mystery in the follow-up to the fan-favorite cozy space opera detective mystery The Mimicking of Known Successes that Hugo Award-winning author Charlie Jane Anders called “an utter triumph.”
Mossa has returned to Valdegeld on a missing person’s case, for which she’ll once again need Pleiti’s insight.
Seventeen students and staff members have disappeared from Valdegeld University—yet no one has noticed. The answers to this case could be found in the outer reaches of the Jovian system—Mossa’s home—and the history of Jupiter’s original settlements. But Pleiti’s faith in her life’s work as scholar of the past has grown precarious, and this new case threatens to further destabilize her dreams for humanity’s future, as well as her own.

Never Kiss a Duke
Never Kiss a Duke by Megan Frampton is $1.99! This is the first book in the Hazards of Dukes series, which released in January. Elyse gave this one a C grade, so your mileage may vary with this romance.
A disinherited duke and a former lady are courting much more than business in the first novel in Megan Frampton’s newest titillating series, Hazards of Dukes.
Everything he had ever known was a lie…
Sebastian, Duke of Hasford, has a title, wealth, privilege, and plenty of rakish charm. Until he discovers the only thing that truly belongs to him is his charm. An accident of birth has turned him into plain Mr. de Silva. Now, Sebastian is flummoxed as to what to do with his life—until he stumbles into a gambling den owned by Miss Ivy, a most fascinating young lady, who hires him on the spot. Working with a boss has never seemed so enticing.
Everything tells her he’s a risk she has to take
Two years ago, Ivy gambled everything that was precious to her—and won. Now the owner of London’s most intriguing gambling house, Ivy is competent, assured, and measured. Until she meets Mr. de Silva, who stirs feelings she didn’t realize she had. Can she keep her composure around her newest employee?
They vow to keep their partnership strictly business, but just one kiss makes them realize that with each passing day—and night—it becomes clear to them both that there’s nothing as tempting as what is forbidden…

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue
GUEST RECOMMENDED: The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab is $2.99! We had a guest review from Rachel and she gave it an A. I highly agree with her assessment. I loved this one!
France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever-and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.
Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world.
But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore, and he remembers her name.
In the vein of The Time Traveler’s Wife and Life After Life, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is New York Times bestselling author V. E. Schwab’s #1 New York Times Bestselling Author genre-defying tour de force.

Love the Mossa and Pleiti books by Malka Older. Sapphic Holmes and Watson on Jupiter with lots of academic shenanigans. The books are short but full of interesting moments, and I like the overarching story.
And highly recommend you listen to THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF ADDIE LARUE on audiobook. One of my favorite narrators, Julia Whelan, does the audiobook. She was on the No Write Way podcast with V.E. Schwab and I liked hearing her process for the book, especially the FMC’s voice. Here’s the podcast on Spotify.

May I recommend my new Reluctant Psychic Mystery, A Stone Cold Murder? “Kris Bock has crafted a story that’s equal parts murder mystery, psychological deep-dive, and small-town gothic horror (in the best way). – Barely Breathing: A Colorado High Country Novel by Pamela Clare
The biggest difference between the Wexler book (heart eyes) and LONG LIVE EVIL is atmosphere. Davi tried so hard to do wrong and failed upwards every time because she simply couldn’t go against her nature. LLE was, for me, quite dark and often confusing; characters with multiple names, no real sense of good/evil. I enjoyed them both, hopefully I haven’t conflated them here, but it’s Davi FTW.
